“Varun Aibek”
What a devilish headache—woke up lying on my bed, sprawled out on my back... I sat up on it and after a few seconds, ran my hand through my hair several times, what crap—I can't remember what happened last night!
I got up and walked to my room’s bathroom. Stripped off my clothes and stepped into a cold shower... I recall having a few drinks, after something, but I can't for the life of me recall what... Let the water pour over my body, trying to wash away this hangover... After drying off with a towel and wrapping it around my waist, I moved to the sink to brush my teeth, caught my reflection, and remembered that she-wolf I'd slept with a few months back.
Evelyn, that was her name! The Arrow's daughter—I found out who she was after some time, smiled remembering she was the one who invited me to the hotel, and there, she drank so much she couldn't recall our night's endeavors, but I remember every bit... It's a shame I never saw her again!
After finishing up my hygiene routine, I dressed in blue shorts and a white t-shirt. I had been away for a few days, clearing my head after that wild phone call... Now I need to check on things here; Marcos was left in charge, so I’m going to look for him and find out what's happened in my absence...
I stepped out from my room and first, noticed a slightly ajar door to the adjacent room. Upon going to close it, spotted a crib—this wasn't here when I left, was it? I entered and saw a cellphone on the dresser next to it, and a pack of diapers... What happened here? I walked over to the crib, picked up a rattle and stared at it for a few seconds.
"Satisfied, Varun?" my brother asked, entering the room with a look of annoyance.
"What do you mean?" I asked, lowering my hand, still holding the rattle.
"By driving your son's mother out!"
"I have no clue what you're implying, Marcos... But you know better than anyone how upset I was after that call, that poor excuse for a joke..."
"You had the nerve to get plastered, come here, and under the influence of that woman who won't leave you alone, you kicked out your child's mother," Marcos interrupted, his voice rising with fury. "And you even questioned the child's paternity, despite my assurances."
"Whoa, slow down, brother, you're just confusing me more... I don't remember any of this!" I said, extending my hand in a gesture of surrender while watching him intently.
"I'm aware, which is why I'm here," for the first time, I noticed a look of disapproval in my brother’s eyes. "Ever since that night you were with her, you've been drinking like mad and look where it's gotten you... Brother, to knock out an Alpha like yourself takes a lot, and it was your downfall."
"I'm sorry, man... Now explain this properly!" I insisted, looking at him earnestly.
"I found her on the outskirts after a heavy rain... The guards had spotted her first and wouldn't have notified me. When I caught up with them, they were cornering her; she was so weak—her father had kicked her out of his pack with a newborn in her arms, and since then, she's been doing everything to sustain the child that's also yours..."
His words formed a lump in my throat... Marcos continued without giving me a chance to retort.
"The first thing that struck me when I found them—the child's eyes, shining just like yours... I brought her to your house and was taking care of them until you returned... But what did you do, brother? You came back drunk, listening to a woman who would do anything to keep any woman away from you, including your child's mother! And you, what did you do?" he bellowed with indignation.
I was at a loss for words, never imagining I'd be capable of such a thing, even when drunk, and worst of all, I couldn't remember any of it... I swallowed hard several times while watching my brother, Evelyn—the girl who had reminded me of her since our first encounter—had been here in my village and I'd treated her terribly.
The thought of how much I'd hurt her was unbearable... When she needed me, what had I done? I was worse than even her own father! Marcos stood still, watching me, before breaking the silence.
"Any particular reason you doubted the child was yours?"
"Well, Marcos, imagine getting a call months later saying, 'Hi, I'm the woman you slept with months ago; congratulations, you're a dad,'" I said sarcastically before seeing his growing irritation and continued seriously, "Damn it, she's Arrow's daughter; I never thought this would happen!"
"You got a call, brother. Why didn't you investigate? But no, you chose to leave aimlessly!" Marcos crossed his arms. "He's your son. I saw your lineage shimmering in his little eyes—man, I'm so mad at you, just for what you did... We always protect family and you were willing to fight me over a lie you concocted when all you had to do was sit down and talk with her."
I deserved this dressing-down from my brother, though he's younger, sometimes he's more level-headed than I am... Damn, what have I done? Pacing back and forth, still clutching the rattle, I realized Evelyn had borne my child and was willing to endure so much for him!
"Marcos, gather everyone and look for Evelyn and my son!" I said, noticing a satisfied grin on his face before he left...
By the way, my name is Varun Aibek, I'm 29, the Alpha of this pack—the most powerful in these lands. Arrow still viciously competes with my father for our position as they're second to us... I never imagined I'd father his daughter! My actions were disgraceful, but I will find her to make amends…
