Chapter 4 - The Verdict
I said those words with my voice shaking, which didn't really give me any courage points.
Served on a leaf, I handed him the slices of boar meat with a pinch of diced herbs.
Li Wei
What are those green things?
Aluna Yan
They are some seasoning herbs that I found outside of the cave. If you're afraid that they're poisonous, I'll try it first-
But before I could finish, he had chewed and swallowed all of the slices that I had offered him.
He chewed and then swallowed.
So, I guess that it can't be that bad, then...
I carved up some more and put out my portion.
Aluna Yan
Mm, it's kind of tough. If only I had some oil or chicken fat...
I had barely eaten one piece and he already wanted more.
I served him more and more until there was only the bone left.
I had contented myself with five slices, which were quite delicious.
After that, he simply sat at the entrance to the cave, holding onto his sword as he closed his eyes.
Was he going to sleep in such an uncomfortable way?
Aluna Yan
Are you still awake?
His eyes then opened suddenly, making me jump back in fright.
He looked at me and said absolutely nothing.
Aluna Yan
My name is Aluna... but what's yours?
He then turned back and closed his eyes again. Guess that he doesn't trust me enough yet-
Li Wei
Li Wei. That's my name.
Aluna Yan
That's a nice name.
He didn't say anything. He just went back to sleep.
I felt quite cold. I had only thought of bringing my father's sword and not a blanket. You know where my priorities are, I guess...
I shivered but eventually got to sleep curled up next to the fire.
I knew that the embers were about to go out but as long as I got to sleep, I'd be happy.
When I was properly asleep, Li opened up his eyes.
They found me, my body shivering with the cold.
Biting his bottom lip, he then took off the top layer of his robe and covered my body with it.
The thickness prevented me from freezing and soon, I slowly stopped shivering.
Then, he did something unexpected. He sat on the rock overlooking me and looked at my face as I fell asleep.
For some reason, he couldn't take his eyes off of me.
Why did he take me in? Why did he create a liability for himself?
Li Wei
She's just a cook... nothing more.
After those words, he fell into a very light sleep, the last thing he laid his eyes on being my sleeping expression.
