Entanglement
[Her words sent a shiver down his spine. This was exactly what he feared—Maya wasn’t just here for a visit. She wanted more, much more than he was willing to give. But her persistence was unnerving, and the way she stood over him made him feel cornered.]
~ CHAPTER 17: TEMPTATION'S TRAP
Ethan said firmly, standing up to put more distance between them.
Ethan Montgomery
"This is over, Maya. Whatever we had, it's done. I'm not going to let you ruin my marriage."
Maya’s eyes darkened, and the playful glint in them disappeared.
Maya Fernandez
"Ruin your marriage? You did that yourself, Ethan. But I’m willing to give you a way out. We can make this work, you and me. Think about what we could have together."
Ethan’s heart pounded in his chest as he realized just how deeply Maya had her claws in him. He had thought he could control the situation, keep her at arm's length, but now he saw how wrong he had been. She wasn’t just a mistake—she was a threat, and a dangerous one at that.
Ethan Montgomery
"I’m not interested, Maya,"
Ethan said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Ethan Montgomery
"Please, just leave."
Maya’s lips curled into a cold smile, and she leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
Maya Fernandez
"You think you can just walk away from this, Ethan? From me? You’re forgetting I have the power here. Don’t make me use it."
Ethan's blood ran cold. He knew exactly what she meant. The photo she had sent him earlier was a clear warning—she was willing to expose everything if he didn't comply with her demands.
Ethan Montgomery
"You wouldn’t"
He said, though his voice betrayed his uncertainty.
Maya Fernandez
"Wouldn’t I?"
Maya retorted, her smile widening.
Maya Fernandez
"You underestimate me, Ethan. I’ll do whatever it takes to get what I want. So, what's it going to be?"
Ethan's mind raced as he tried to figure out a way out of this nightmare. He could feel the walls closing in around him, the weight of his mistakes pressing down on him from all sides. But before he could respond, his phone buzzed in his pocket, breaking the tense silence.
He pulled it out and saw Rachel's name on the screen. A wave of guilt washed over him, nearly overwhelming. He couldn't answer the call, not with Maya standing right in front of him, watching his every move.
Maya said softly, glancing at the phone in his hand.
Maya Fernandez
"What would she think if she knew you were here with me, right now?"
Ethan's heart ached with the realization of what he had done. He had risked everything—his marriage, his life, his future. And for what? A momentary lapse in judgment? He couldn't allow this to continue.
Ethan Montgomery
"She’ll never know"
He said finally, his voice filled with a quiet determination.
Ethan Montgomery
"Because you’re going to leave. Now."
Maya's smile faltered for the first time, replaced by a look of genuine surprise.
Maya Fernandez
"I'm not leaving, Understand"
Maya Fernandez
"Answer it,"
Maya whispered, her voice dripping with mischief as she reached out, her fingers brushing against his arm. Ethan pulled back slightly, trying to maintain distance, but Maya was relentless. She leaned in closer, her hand continuing to trail along his arm, attempting to take the phone from him.
Maya Fernandez
"Let me talk to her"
She insisted, her eyes gleaming with a dangerous intent. Ethan tightened his grip on the phone, refusing to let her have it.
Ethan Montgomery
"Maya, stop,"
He said through gritted teeth, trying to keep his voice calm. The last thing he wanted was for Rachel to overhear anything that would raise her suspicions.
Ignoring his words, Maya's hand reached for the phone again, but Ethan turned his back to her, pressing the phone to his ear as he answered Rachel’s call.
Ethan Montgomery
"Hey, Rachel"
He greeted, his voice steady, though his mind was racing.
Maya stepped closer and hugged him from behind..... Ethan moved further away, creating as much distance as possible while staying composed on the call. Rachel’s voice was a soothing contrast to the tension in the room.
Rachel Montgomery
"Are you alright?"
Rachel asked, sensing something was off.
Ethan Montgomery
"Yeah, I'm fine"
Ethan replied, forcing a smile into his voice.
Ethan Montgomery
"Just wrapping up some things at home."
As Ethan and Rachel were on the call, Maya moved closer to him and sat on his lap. When Ethan tried to get up, she forcefully made him sit back down. Ethan looked at her angrily while still speaking softly to Rachel on the phone.
As Ethan continued his conversation with Rachel over the phone, Maya remained glued to his side. She clung to his arm, her fingers lightly tracing patterns on his skin. Ethan tried to focus on the conversation with Rachel, his voice soft and reassuring, but Maya's persistent touch made it difficult for him to concentrate.
Every time he shifted, trying to create some distance between them, Maya would tighten her grip, refusing to let go.
Rachel's voice on the other end was cheerful, asking if he'd had dinner.
Rachel Montgomery
"I’ll be back early in the morning, okay?"
She added. Ethan forced a smile, trying to keep his voice steady.
Ethan Montgomery
"Yes, I had dinner. Don’t worry about me. See you soon."
But as he spoke, his eyes were locked on Maya, who seemed to revel in the power she held at that moment. Her presence was overwhelming, and Ethan felt trapped. The call ended, and as soon as it did, he turned to Maya, anger simmering beneath his calm exterior.
Ethan Montgomery
“Leave, Maya”
But Maya simply smirked, her hand still lingering on his arm.
Maya Fernandez
“Why are you in such a rush to get rid of me, Ethan?”
She teased, ignoring his request.
Maya Fernandez
“You know you don’t really want me to go.”
Ethan clenched his jaw, resisting the urge to push her away.
Ethan Montgomery
"I said, leave,"
He repeated, this time more forcefully. But Maya only inched closer, her smile never fading.
Maya's persistence was beginning to wear down Ethan’s patience. He could feel the tension in his muscles, the frustration building with each passing second.
He said, his voice a mix of anger and desperation,
Ethan Montgomery
"this isn’t a game. You need to leave. Now."
But instead of complying, Maya only leaned in closer, her face inches from his.
She whispered, her voice dripping with a mix of seduction and defiance,
Maya Fernandez
"Why are you so afraid? Afraid that you might actually want this? Or afraid that Rachel might find out?"
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. He wasn’t going to let her manipulate him, not this time. He stood up abruptly, breaking free from her grip. Maya stumbled slightly, surprised by his sudden movement. He took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm of emotions raging inside him.
Ethan Montgomery
"I’m not afraid of you, Maya. But I won’t let you ruin what’s left of my life."
Maya stood as well, her expression shifting from playful to something darker.
She repeated, a mocking edge to her tone.
Maya Fernandez
"Ethan, I’m not the one who ruined anything. You were the one who came to me, remember? You were the one who let things go this far."
Ethan’s hands clenched into fists at his sides.
Ethan Montgomery
"And I regret every moment of it,"
Ethan Montgomery
"I was weak, but that doesn’t give you the right to hold it over my head."
Maya’s eyes flashed with anger.
Maya Fernandez
"You think you can just brush me off like that?"
She hissed, her voice sharp.
Maya Fernandez
"After everything we’ve been through?"
Ethan didn’t waver. He knew he had to stand firm, for his own sake and for Rachel’s.
Ethan Montgomery
"Whatever this was"
He said, his voice steady
Ethan Montgomery
"it’s over. I’m done with you, Maya. Now, leave."
Maya’s gaze hardened, but she saw the resolve in Ethan’s eyes. She knew he meant every word. With a final, cold look, she turned on her heel and walked towards the door. But just as she reached for the handle, she paused and glanced back at him.
Maya Fernandez
"This isn’t over, Ethan,"
She said quietly, a promise of more to come.
Maya Fernandez
"Not by a long shot."
Without another word, she opened the door and left, leaving Ethan standing alone in the living room, the tension in the air finally beginning to dissipate. He exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair as he tried to collect his thoughts. He had to find a way to make things right with Rachel, and that meant keeping Maya as far away from his life as possible. But deep down, he knew that wouldn’t be easy.
