THE "Golden Days"¹
[Ethan’s heart ached as he ended the call. He knew he had let Rachel down once again. With heavy steps, he made his way back to his car, the weight of his actions pressing down on him.]
~CHAPTER 10 : FOUR DAYS SEEMS LIKE HONEYMOON PERIOD~
Ethan walked through the front door, his mind still replaying the events at Maya’s apartment. The tension between them had been high, and the guilt gnawing at him had only intensified. But now, as he stepped into the warm, familiar embrace of home, all he wanted was to make things right with Rachel.
Ethan Montgomery
“Rachel?”
He called out softly, his voice thick with emotion. He found her in the living room, curled up on the couch with a book in hand. Her face lit up when she saw him, but there was a hint of exhaustion in her eyes.
Without a word, Ethan crossed the room and pulled Rachel into his arms. The tightness in his chest loosened as he held her close, feeling the steady beat of her heart against his.
Ethan Montgomery
“I’m sorry,”
He whispered into her hair, his voice barely audible.
Ethan Montgomery
“I’ve been distant, and you don’t deserve that.”
Rachel melted into his embrace, her arms wrapping around his neck.
Rachel Montgomery
“You’re here now,”
She replied softly, her words a balm to his troubled soul.
Rachel Montgomery
“That’s all that matters.”
For a long moment, they stayed like that, drawing comfort from each other’s presence. The world outside faded away, leaving just the two of them in their small cocoon of warmth and love.
Over the next four days, Ethan decided to take some time off work—a luxury he could afford as the CEO. He knew he needed this break as much as Rachel did, if not more. The guilt that had been eating at him started to ease as he focused on being the husband Rachel needed.
On the first morning of his time off, Ethan woke up early and decided to surprise Rachel with breakfast in bed. He moved around the kitchen with a sense of purpose, frying eggs, toasting bread, and brewing coffee. The smell of freshly cooked food wafted through the air, waking Rachel from her slumber.
She walked into the kitchen, still in her pajamas, her hair slightly tousled.
Rachel Montgomery
“What’s all this?”
She asked, a smile playing on her lips.
Ethan turned around, holding a tray laden with food.
Ethan Montgomery
“Breakfast in bed for the most important person in my life,”
Rachel’s heart swelled with love as she took in the sight.
Rachel Montgomery
“You didn’t have to do this,”
She said, though the happiness in her eyes betrayed her words.
Ethan Montgomery
“I wanted to,”
Ethan insisted, guiding her back to bed.
Ethan Montgomery
“Besides, you deserve to be spoiled a little. Or a lot.”
Rachel laughed softly, leaning in to give him a quick kiss on the cheek.
Rachel Montgomery
“You’re too sweet,”
Rachel Montgomery
“What’s the occasion?”
Ethan shrugged, pretending to think.
Ethan Montgomery
“Hmm, maybe it’s just because I love you. Or maybe I’m just trying to make up for being a workaholic husband.”
Rachel Montgomery
“You don’t need to make up for anything,”
Rachel said, her tone sincere.
Rachel Montgomery
“But I do love this side of you. My personal chef.”
Ethan Montgomery
“Well then,”
Ethan Montgomery
“your personal chef is at your service, Mrs. Ethan. Whatever you want, whenever you want it.”
Rachel giggled, taking a bite of toast.
Rachel Montgomery
“Careful, I might take you up on that offer.”
That day, they decided to spend time outdoors. Rachel had always loved the garden, and Ethan suggested they do some planting together. They spent hours in the backyard, hands dirty with soil, laughing as they teased each other about their gardening skills.
Rachel Montgomery
“You call that a straight row?”
Rachel joked, pointing at the crooked line of flowers Ethan had planted.
Ethan laughed, pretending to be offended.
Ethan Montgomery
“Hey, I’m a businessman, not a gardener. But I’m pretty sure these flowers will still bloom beautifully—just like you.”
Rachel rolled her eyes playfully.
Rachel Montgomery
“Smooth talker. But I guess I’ll let it slide since you’re trying.”
Ethan grinned, leaning over to brush a smudge of dirt off Rachel’s nose.
Ethan Montgomery
“I’m trying because I want to make you happy.”
Rachel Montgomery
“You already do,”
Rachel said softly, her eyes meeting his with warmth.
Rachel Montgomery
“More than you know.”
Ethan Montgomery
[ "I'm Sorry, Rachel... Really.... Sorry"]
They both were talking, and they didn't realize the time....
Ethan and Rachel both get up and go inside the house...
In the evenings, they would settle on the couch to watch movies, Rachel snuggled up against Ethan’s side. He would wrap an arm around her, drawing her close, his heart full as he watched her laugh at the silliest scenes.
Rachel Montgomery
“I forgot how much I love watching movies with you,”
Rachel murmured, her head resting on Ethan’s shoulder.
Ethan smiled, kissing the top of her head.
Ethan Montgomery
“Me too. We should do this more often.”
Rachel nodded, then grinned mischievously.
Rachel Montgomery
“Next time, though, I get to pick the movie.”
Ethan Montgomery
“But only if it’s not another rom-com.”
Rachel gasped in mock outrage.
Rachel Montgomery
“How dare you! Rom-coms are the best.”
Ethan Montgomery
“Okay, okay,”
Ethan said, raising his hands in surrender.
Ethan Montgomery
“You win. Rom-coms it is.”
She smiled and peck on his lips.
On the second day, Rachel decided they should cook dinner together. It was something they hadn’t done in ages. As they moved around the kitchen, chopping vegetables, stirring pots, and sneaking tastes of the food, they couldn’t stop laughing.
At one point, Ethan accidentally spilled flour on Rachel, and she retaliated by flicking water at him. Soon, they were both covered in flour and water, laughing so hard that their sides hurt.
Rachel Montgomery
“Look at us,”
Rachel said between giggles, wiping flour from Ethan’s cheek.
Ethan Montgomery
“We’re a mess!”
Ethan grinned, pulling her into a floury hug.
Rachel Montgomery
“But we’re a happy mess. And I wouldn’t trade this moment for anything.”
When they finally sat down to eat, the meal was simple but delicious—made all the better by the joy of cooking it together. Ethan looked at Rachel across the table, her eyes sparkling with happiness, and felt a deep sense of contentment. This was what life should be, he realized. This was what he had almost lost.
That night, as they lay in bed, Rachel rested her head on Ethan’s chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
Rachel Montgomery
“I’ve missed this,”
She whispered, her voice full of emotion.
Ethan Montgomery
“Me too,”
Ethan replied, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. He held her close, vowing to never take her for granted again.
Rachel Montgomery
“Promise me,”
Rachel Montgomery
“that we’ll always make time for each other like this.”
Ethan Montgomery
“hmm, I promise,”
Ethan said, his voice firm with conviction.
Rachel Montgomery
“No more work getting in the way. Just you and me.”
Perhaps, in these two days, Ethan realized how much he enjoys Rachel's company. The only thing missing was that he hadn’t made time for Rachel from his busy schedule, which led to the growing distance between them. And the result is clear—how he ended up being attracted to Maya.
Ethan had made a mistake, and now this mistake could not be overlooked.
What do you think? If Rachel finds out, will she forgive him?
