~CHAPTER 9: ETHAN'S GUILT INTENSIFIES~

As they sat in the doctor's office waiting for Rachel's test results, Ethan’s phone buzzed in his pocket. It was a message from Maya, asking him to come over urgently. He glanced at Rachel, who was sitting beside him, looking pale and exhausted.

"I have to take this"

He said, standing up.

Ethan Montgomery

"It's important."

Rachel looked up at him with concern.

Rachel Montgomery

"Is everything okay?"

Ethan hesitated.

Ethan Montgomery

"It's just something from work. I'll be back as soon as I can."

Rachel gave him a weak smile.

Rachel Montgomery

"It's okay, Ethan. You can go. I'll be fine here."

Ethan felt a pang of guilt as he left the doctor's office, but the pull towards Maya was too strong. He needed to see her, to escape the growing pressure and confusion that his double life was creating.

Ethan’s mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions as he drove towards Maya’s apartment. The guilt from leaving Rachel at the hospital gnawed at him, but he couldn’t shake the urgency in Maya’s voice when she called. She had insisted that she needed to see him, and despite everything, he had gone to her.

As he reached Maya's apartment, the weight of his choices pressed heavily on him. He hesitated at the door, questioning what he was doing. But the door opened before he could knock, and there stood Maya, dressed in a striking red gown that clung to her curves, revealing more than concealing. The lights inside were dim, and soft music played in the background, creating a romantic atmosphere.

Ethan's heart sank. The frustration and anger he had tried to suppress all day surged to the surface.

"What the hell is this, Maya?"

Ethan's voice was sharp, his eyes narrowing as he took in the scene before him.

Maya’s confident smile faltered slightly, but she quickly regained her composure, her eyes shimmering with a mix of seduction and defiance.

"I wanted to surprise you, Ethan. I thought we could spend some time together, away from all the stress."

"Are you out of your mind?"

Ethan's voice rose, his anger bubbling over.

"You called me here for this? Do you have any idea what I've been dealing with?"

Maya’s eyes widened, and she took a step back.

Maya Fernandez

"Ethan, I just thought..."

Ethan cut her off, running a hand through his hair in frustration.

"Rachel is in the hospital, Maya! She’s sick, and I left her there, all alone, because you said it was urgent! And this is what you meant? A romantic evening? Have you lost your mind?"

Maya's expression shifted from confusion to anger.

Maya Fernandez

"I didn’t know she was in the hospital! How could I know that? You didn’t tell me!"

Ethan shook his head, pacing back and forth.

Ethan Montgomery

"You shouldn’t have to know! You should understand that I have responsibilities. This... whatever this is, it isn’t worth risking everything."

Maya's eyes flashed with hurt and frustration.

Maya Fernandez

"So what are you saying, Ethan? That I’m not important? That we’re not important?"

Ethan stopped pacing and looked at her, his anger giving way to a weary sadness.

"I don’t know what we are, Maya. But I do know that I can’t keep doing this. Sneaking around... and I sure as hell can’t leave her in the hospital to come to some... date night!"

Maya’s lips trembled as she tried to hold back tears.

Maya Fernandez

"Ethan, I care about you. I thought... I thought you cared about me too."

Ethan’s shoulders slumped as he sighed.

Ethan Montgomery

"I do care about you, Maya."

Maya took a step towards him, her voice softening.

Maya Fernandez

"We can make it right, Ethan. We can figure this out together."

Ethan looked at her, torn between his emotions and his sense of duty.

"I don’t know if we can. This isn’t just about us. Rachel... she’s my wife. I made vows to her. And right now, I’m breaking every single one of them."

Maya reached out, placing a hand on his chest.

Ethan Montgomery

"You’re not happy with her, Ethan. I can see it. Why else would you be here, with me?"

Ethan looked down at her hand, feeling the warmth of her touch.

Even though it was unintentional, Maya was right about one thing. Despite being with Rachel, why did Ethan become so attracted to Maya? Why did this happen after so many years of marriage? At that moment, Ethan was completely out of his mind and couldn’t understand what was happening.

But that didn’t justify what he was doing. It didn’t excuse the betrayal.

"I don’t know, Maya,"

Ethan whispered, his voice heavy with guilt.

Ethan Montgomery

"Maybe I’m just a coward. Maybe I’m too scared to face the truth."

Maya searched his eyes, trying to find a glimmer of hope.

Maya Fernandez

"Then let’s face it together. We can make this work, Ethan. We can be happy."

Ethan closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. The allure of Maya’s offer was tempting, but the image of Rachel, lying alone in that hospital bed, haunted him.

"I need to go,"

He said quietly, stepping back.

Maya’s eyes filled with desperation.

Ethan Montgomery

"Ethan, please don’t go. Stay with me tonight. We can talk this through. We can figure out what to do next."

Ethan shook his head, his resolve hardening.

"I can’t, Maya. I need to go back to Rachel. She needs me."

Maya’s face crumpled as tears finally spilled over.

Maya Fernandez

"What about me, Ethan? Don’t I need you too?"

Ethan felt a pang of guilt, but he forced himself to remain firm.

Ethan Montgomery

"I’m sorry, Maya. But Rachel is my wife. I can’t just abandon her."

Maya stepped back, wiping away her tears angrily.

Maya Fernandez

"Fine. Go to her. But don’t come running back to me when things fall apart."

He turned and walked out of the apartment, leaving Maya standing alone in the dim light.

As Ethan drove back to the hospital, his thoughts raced. He knew he had made the right decision, but the guilt and confusion weighed heavily on him. He had crossed a line, and there was no going back. But maybe, just maybe, he could find a way to make things right with Rachel.

But I think it's late now for his regret....

When he arrived at the hospital, he rushed to Rachel's room, his heart pounding in his chest. She was awake, looking tired but relieved to see him.

After the heated argument with Maya, Ethan stormed out of her apartment, his mind a whirlwind of confusion and anger. His phone buzzed with missed calls from Rachel, further fueling his guilt. Ignoring the burning need for clarity, he drove to the hospital, desperate to find Rachel.

The fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway seemed harsher than usual. Ethan approached the reception desk, trying to steady his voice.

Ethan Montgomery

“I’m looking for Rachel. She was supposed to be in the hospital.”

The receptionist glanced up from her computer screen.

Receptionist

“I’m sorry, sir. Mrs. Ethan was left about half an hour ago.”

Ethan’s heart sank.

Ethan Montgomery

" Left? She wasn’t supposed to leave yet.”

The receptionist offered a sympathetic smile.

Receptionist

“She signed out herself. Is there anything else I can help with?”

Ethan shook his head, trying to process the situation. He left the hospital in a daze, his mind racing. He pulled out his phone and dialed Rachel’s number, his fingers trembling slightly.

Rachel Montgomery

“Hello?”

Rachel answered, her voice sounding weary.

Ethan Montgomery

“Rachel, where are you? The hospital said you left,”

Ethan asked, his concern barely masking his irritation.

Rachel Montgomery

“I’m on my way home,”

Rachel replied softly.

Rachel Montgomery

“I didn’t want to disturb you. You seemed so engrossed in your work. I thought it would be better if I just left.”

Ethan’s frustration grew.

Ethan Montgomery

“Rachel, I told you I would be there for you. Why didn’t you wait for me?”

Rachel sighed.

Rachel Montgomery

“I’m fine, Ethan. I didn’t want to add to your stress. You’ve been so busy lately. I thought it would be better if I just went home.”

Ethan felt a pang of guilt mixed with helplessness.

Ethan Montgomery

"I’m sorry. I was caught up in something important. I didn’t realize how late it was.”

Rachel Montgomery

“There’s no need to apologize,”

Rachel said, trying to sound reassuring.

Rachel Montgomery

“Just come home when you can. I’ll be waiting.”

Ethan’s heart ached as he ended the call. He knew he had let Rachel down once again. With heavy steps, he made his way back to his car, the weight of his actions pressing down on him.
