Episode 16

I spent the entire day holed up in this headquarters. I couldn't stand to see any more drugs, weapons, and alliances being formed. I felt something vibrating in my pocket. I checked; it wasn't my cell phone but my wife's. Her father was sending her several messages. I had been monitoring her social media, taking care of everything since the day she set foot in my house. Her father was distressed, wanting to know how she was. I sent him an audio message to stop texting, that she was fine and it would only be worse if he insisted on seeing her.

When I heard a knock on the door, I said to come in. It was Vicente! My childhood friend! I got up from my chair smiling! He came up to me and hugged me.

Vicente: "Missed me?" He started laughing, patting me on the back.

Rafael: "I missed you more. I knew it was for a good cause."

Vicente: "Oh, it was; the good cause was five foot one. Hahaha."

We started laughing.

Vicente: "I missed your wedding. I couldn't make it in time."

Rafael: "Ah, you didn't miss much."

Vicente: "What's she like? Is she hot?"

Rafael: "I don't want to talk about it."

Vicente: "Oh, come on, she can't be that bad."

Rafael: "That's not it, she's hot, it's just...!"

He rolled his eyes, looking up.

Vicente: "It's that Thays girl, right? Man, what did that girl do to you? Did she put a spell on you?"

Rafael: "We broke up two days before the wedding, my father offered her money and she accepted."

Vicente: "I always told you that would happen."

Rafael: "Yeah, I know. I don't want to talk about it anymore. Let's celebrate! Let's have a few drinks; dinner is at my place, what do you think?"

Vicente: "Only if it's right now!"

We left arm in arm, happy. Vicente always cheered me up. We left the warehouse and stopped at a bar we used to go to together as teenagers. We ordered a drink each and talked about his life because there was very little to be said about mine. I always envied the freedom he has, to be able to be with whoever he wants, do whatever he wants, and say whatever he wants. I've always had a huge weight on my shoulders. So, hearing about his adventures was what kept me going. As we were talking, Thays walked into the place with a friend.

Vicente: "Oh, man!" He looked at the door.

Rafael: "What?" He didn't answer me, so I looked back and saw her in a tiny black dress. My heart skipped a beat, and so did something else. She came up to me. I took a big gulp of my drink.

Thays: "Hi, Dom!" She looked at Vicente. "Hi, Vi, long time no see. I've missed you."

I got up, irritated, facing her and not caring who was watching me.

Rafael: "Listen here, Thays, you're not going to hit on my best friend in front of me!"

Thays: "Calm down, Dom, I'm not hitting on anyone, especially because I know Vicente would never look at me." She looked at him sitting at the table!

Rafael: "Don't play games with me, you don't know what I'm capable of."

Thays: "Oh, I do. I heard the wedding was perfect. Have you slept with her yet?" Her face was pure jealousy, and it drove me crazy.

Rafael: "Yes! Last night I had her, like I used to have you. Remember?"

Thays: "You bastard, you bastard..." Her expression changed to anger, and she started punching my chest. I grabbed her wrists and took her out of the bar. It was dark outside; I pinned her against the wall, holding her hands!

Rafael: "Stop putting on a show, Thays. I know your games, and I know what you want!"

Thays: "What do I want, Dom?" I slid my hand between her legs, inside her panties, and massaged her clitoris. Thays let out a moan. Maya's face flashed in my mind. I froze. I pulled my hand away from her as Vicente appeared.

Vicente: "We better go!"

Rafael: "Yeah, we better."

I was shocked at myself for my thoughts. I looked at her seriously.

Thays: "You're going to leave me like this?"

Rafael: "I am, I'm married, Thays, leave me alone!"

Thays: "What?" She started laughing in my face. "Forgot about our plans, Dom? Even after the wedding?"

Rafael: "Leave me alone, I told you!"

I turned my back and walked away from there with Vicente. Thays always messed with my head, but now it was Maya who was present. It felt wrong to be with another woman while married to her. I never thought I would feel something like this; our plans were specific and seemed easy for me—to marry her but continue with Thays—but now I can't explain what changed. We got in the car and went home.

Vicente: "Dude, what happened back there?"

Rafael: "I... I don't know, I wanted to be with her, but I don't know!"

Vicente: "Dude, you know what it means to have lovers in the world you live in. Forget about Thays."

I remained silent until we got home. We entered, and I didn't see Maya! Vicente hugged Rosa happily.

Vicente: "Ah, Rosinha, I've missed you."

Rosa: "I've missed you, dear. Are you alright?"

Just then, I heard the sound of Maya's high heels entering the space where we were! I turned to look at her!
