After we greeted everyone, we sat down at a table – me, Rafael, my future father-in-law, and a few other henchmen. Rafael held my hand, interlacing our fingers. When he touched me, I felt a shiver run through my body. I looked at our hands together and didn't know what to think. I returned my gaze to him, who was also looking at me, serious, and didn’t know what to do. It was too much for me; I couldn't stand that situation, and I bet neither could he.
Julio: "Isn't she enchanting?"
Man: "Yes, very much so, she'll make a beautiful wife! She'll have beautiful children."
Rafael smiled, letting go of my hand and hugging me.
Rafael: "I want several, I already told Maya, I want a soccer team."
Everyone laughed, including me. I didn't know how to act; he told me to go with the flow, so I did. Suddenly, I see a beautiful woman enter, wearing a red dress clinging to her body, arm in arm with a man. Rafael's face hardened instantly, following the woman with his eyes.
Julio: "Hello, Hector, welcome!"
Hector: "I couldn't refuse an invitation from the Don, could I?"
The guy went to greet Julio, then Rafael! But it was clear that Rafael had a history with that woman; he froze instantly.
Hector: "This is Thays, my girlfriend."
Rafael went into a trance. The girl approached me.
Thays: "Nice to meet you, Maya." She extended her hand.
Maya: "It’s a pleasure!" I took her hand.
Thays: "Buongiorno, Dom Rafael."
Rafael: "Good… Um, could you excuse me for a moment?"
Rafael left them right then, confirming what I already imagined, this Thays is important to him somehow. I just don’t know how yet. I sat down once again; Julio began to look at me with a frown. I excused myself.
Maya: "Excuse me, I'm going to see my fiance!"
They continued talking while Thays fixed her eyes on me. I left to go after Rafael. He was outside, nervously pacing back and forth.
Maya: "Rafael?" I called his name more than once.
Maya: "Rafael?"
He looked at me angrily.
Rafael: "Get out of here, what do you want?"
I approached him, speaking softly; this could be catastrophic.
Maya: "You know this girl, don't you?"
Rafael lunged at me, grabbing my arms.
Rafael: "It's none of your business, do you understand?"
His hands gripped me tightly.
Maya: "Rafael, you're hurting me, I just came to help!"
Rafael: "You exist to ruin my life, Maya, that’s what you came for, so I'm warning you, stay out of my way!" He released me abruptly!
Maya: "You imbecile, you deserve everything that’s happening to you. I hope this girl leaves you, and you suffer greatly."
Rafael: "Shut your damn mouth!" His eyes reflected the hatred he held within him.
Julio: "Have you gone mad, Rafael?"
He turned to look at his father.
Rafael: "It was you, wasn't it, Papa? You brought her here with another man. Why, Papa?"
Julio: "So you would understand that she is a nobody who doesn't deserve you. She sold herself for money, now wipe that look off your face and get back in there with your fiancee. If I lose my position because of you, Rafael, you will be disinherited. Understood?"
The two looked at each other seriously. Rafael grabbed my hand and left, pulling me back inside. He loves her so much, that’s why he hates me so much, because he can't be with her. We went back inside; Rafael called everyone's attention.
Rafael: "Listen up, I want to make this request right now!" He turned to me.
"My beautiful fiancee, Maya, the love of my life, do you accept to marry me?"
He looked at me seriously, almost forcing me to say yes. I wasn’t crazy enough to say no, knowing the consequences.
Maya: "Yes..."
Then Rafael surprised me! He held my waist and pulled me into his arms, kissing me. His tongue invaded my entire mouth, filling me completely. His lips were soft; all I could hear were the applause of the people as I let myself be kissed. After the kiss, he looked at me seriously, and we stayed like that for a while. Then, he looked at the council, smiling. His father looked at us, proud that his damn plan had worked.
Next, we sat down and lunch was served. Rafael continued with his charade but didn't take his eyes off the girl beside us. He held my hand, kissed my face, but I knew it was all to make the girl jealous. After that lunch, we left, and Rafael was free to hate me in peace.
We arrived home; he went straight up to his room.
Julio: "Very good, Maya. Now you’re truly welcome to the family."
I stayed there, looking at him.
Maya: "Oh, I'm sorry, should I be grateful?"
Julio: "Don't be ungrateful, girl, if it weren't for me, you'd be eating dirt with your father!"
Maya: "Don't you talk about my father, you have no right!"
I turned my back and went up to my room.
