Chapter 14

Abigail walked out with her mother. She adorned her eyes with everything she saw around her, trying not to miss a single detail and not forget her true home, where she actually belonged.

“You better stand here quietly. I will head back as soon as possible after receiving a phone call.”

Her mother left, while she stood on the side, crying silently. All of this was just too painful for an eight-year-old, who had no idea of how cruel the world around her could be. She was given the warmth and happiness, which was cruelly snatched away from her.

Why so?

It turned out that there was no answer to that question.

Abigail missed her father, who had always been kind to her. But was it true kindness, or just his way of atoning his guilt?

There were too many doubts. Abigail had many questions, but she knew that her mother would never give her the correct answers.

“Hey-”

All of a sudden, a boy fell down beside where Abigail stood.

She looked up to see from where his entrance could’ve been from, and it was the window, located high above her. Abigail looked at the boy, confused but impressed at his skills at the same time.

“Yo, how're you doing?”

The boy spoke casually, as if they had been friends since a long time.

“Me?” Abigail answered, pointing to herself, unsure if she might be the one he directed his question to.

“Why, of course,” he laughed, “I don’t think there’s anybody except us here.”

“Oh... Well, I’m not doing great at all. My mother is trying to forcefully take me some other place, but I don’t want to leave here.”

Abigail looked embarrassed at the state of her situation. She looked at the boy’s eyes, and saw him smile.

“I must admit, that is very wrong of her-Oh.”

Abigail turned back, and found her mother stomping towards her with anger. She became frightened, without knowing what to do, when all of a sudden, the unknown boy grabbed her hand gently.

“Come with me. Let’s get out of here.”

There was no time to hesitate. It was a hit-or-miss situation, and the moment seemed like the only chance she had to change her fate. She nodded her head in agreement, and he immediately pulled her and ran away, jumping through the window and over the walls.

Abigail turned back, and she could vividly her mother shouting and threatening her to come back.

The freedom she thirsted for so long was finally achieved. She had no plans, and nowhere to go, but surely she would find a place to stay other than the hellhole her mother prepared for her?

The unknown lad’s presence calmed her and relieved her worries, and she laughed heartily, while running her fastest and trying her best to avoid tripping. Her hair flew high, and it felt like the world had opened a new chapter in her life.

She then looked up, to meet the boy’s mesmerizing emerald green eyes. They looked like the most beautiful thing ever.
