Arthur was beyond speechless. He could not believe that his new favourite person had gone through so much suffering without letting anyone know. Her house was in shambles, everything was broken and messed up. There were torn pages from books, a bunch of hairs scattered throughout the floor, and eerie texts were scribbled all over the walls.
“Save me.”
“I want to escape.”
All of that terrified him. But it was not the time to let fear control him.
Arthur immediately filed a missing report and accompanied the police to Abigail’s house. The cops did not want to act immediately, partly because the condition of the house depicted more of a crime scene than a runaway case.
They went through Abigail’s stuff and paperwork. Nothing was left that could be used to track or identify her. She had no family, or friends, and not a single person who was related to her any closer than a stranger, outside the company she worked for.
Regardless, the police promised to try their best to find her and report to the company if they got any satisfying results.
On the other hand, Abigail was lost and stranded. She had no luggage with her, and no final destination in mind for the journey she had commenced.
“I have finally escaped the demons,” she thought to herself, as she walked barefoot on the pavement, “Now I’m in a place where nobody can find me. I am aware of the dangers and the conspiracies against us, so now I must inform everyone about it. That way I can prevent everyone from getting hurt.”
She shivered and bit her lips, as the cold wind cut past her skin like a blade. Abigail kept on walking and walking and soon ended up in what seemed like a suspicious region. There were not many people around, but they seemed dangerous, which triggered her paranoia. She hid herself between the walls, waiting for the path to be clear and make her move at the appropriate time.
She stood there with her kitchen knife in hand as the only weapon to protect herself with. Suddenly, a large hand grabbed her waist and pulled her back.
“A girl walking alone in the middle of the night in this neighbourhood? Do you not wish to be alive any more?”
Abigail quickly tried to stab the unknown man, but he dodged her attacks swiftly and trapped her in his handcuffs. “Woah, girlie - you’re a wild cat. It’ll be fun-”
He suddenly stopped, as the dim street light flickered on Abigail’s face, exposing her eyes and a part of her facial structure.
“Abby? Is that you?”
Abigail was stunned to be recognized. She quickly looked up, but due to the dim flickering light, could not identify his face very well, which hid behind the darkness of the night.
“Who - Who’re you? How do you know my name?”
It was as if she could hear a soft chuckle and feel a bump on her head.
“Oh, Abigail... how could I have ever imagined something like this would happen? Do you not recognize me?”
“Don’t play games with me. Tell me who you are.”
“Me? Well, my dearest Abby, let me introduce myself. I am your ugly past, Abigail. I am the one behind your current self, I am the one who made you what you wanted to be.”
Then all of a sudden, he leaned closer, whispering into her ear, sending shivers down her spine.
“My little strawberry shortcake, I am your childhood.”
