Episode 6

“Ah…” she sighed as she sipped her drink. She stared blankly at the busy road, the cars engaging in silent fights to overtake each other, someone walking their dog on the pavement, and the shopkeeper scolding the children for fiddling with his goods. Her thoughts swung from one extreme to another, it was like her head was never truly at rest.

All of a sudden, she received a pat on her back. “Break time's over, Abigail! Time to get back to work!”

It was a coworker.

Abigail didn't move from her place for a long time. It was as if she was lost in the depths of her thoughts. Her coworker left after the reminder, but she didn't show any signs of doing anything about it. It was like she wasn't present there at all in the first place.

“Where… am I?”

“What am I doing here?”

She questioned herself anxiously and in a state of confusion.

“I'm tired, I should go home.”

Everything was too hurried and mind-boggling for her. She repeated the same questions over and over again as she abruptly left the office and went home.

As soon as she returned home, she placed her stuff in a corner and searched her whole house. She flashed the torch at every nook and corner to check for intruders. As she put her hand in her pocket, she felt a wrinkled paper and pulled it out.

"What the hell? Where'd this come from?"

She was suspicious. Even more than before. Someone was playing with her mind. She has to identify and end the perpetrator before she gets trapped in the web of lies.

She tiptoed to her room and left her house with her blanket and bedsheet. Furthermore, she was convinced that someone was hiding in her house, ready to pounce on her and kill her once she rested her eyes. "The outsides are safer than her home" - that's what she thought.

Throughout the night, she was on guard and thus without a wink of sleep. She would try to act crazy to scare away anyone who would seem like approaching her.

In the morning, she directly went to work wearing the same set of clothes.

"Where did you go after a break yesterday, Ms Abigail? Are you forgetting that this is a workplace and not a place to fool around?"

The director screeched at her, while Abigail listened to all the complaints silently.

Most of the coworkers felt sad for the poor girl. It was only her second day, so it can be excused. Furthermore, she didn't look like she had any strength to fight back. It was a pathetic sight to witness.

Abigail didn't say a word. She stood there still, expressionless, without a hint of sorrow on her face.

"Are you mocking me? How dare you-!"

After an hour of being scolded and almost getting a pay cut, she returned to her desk like nothing had ever happened. However, in reality, she was a tad bit mad after the talk as it was almost as clear as day that the director had a personal grudge against her and wanted to take advantage of her.

While shuffling through the disorganized files, Abigail suddenly stood up, facing a note pasted on the table with horror.

"Pathetic moron. You should die." - it read.

She crumpled the note and looked around to find the perpetrator. But she knew it was her. Marianne. That pretty coworker who paid a little too much attention to the newbie.

"I must remain calm...," She told herself, her fists folded, and her jaws clenched tight as she watched the other laughing and chatting among her friends.

Abigail's eyes turned reddish with anger at the atrocious deed. Her heart sank deep, as she caved out of the delusion of ever feeling the so-called being loved.

"It's over. The end is near."

She attempted to put her thoughts to rest but was unable to. She couldn't help but feel betrayed, being surrounded by what she called the evil and the corrupt.
