“Abby? Abigail? Do you hear me?”
Abigail suddenly looked around and was brought back to reality. She was momentarily lost in her past thoughts, of the time she had first met Nick. It was funny how their first encounters were always messy, but it was admirable how he still rocked his leather punk boots and dashing green eyes even after more than ten years
.
He looked at her eagerly.
“So this is what kept you busy after you left without any notice?” Abigail asked bitterly.
Nicholas chuckled.
“Certainly not. There were way bigger things that have happened, but it’s all old news. Let’s talk about you. Looks like you’re heading somewhere?”
He pointed at the suitcase in her hand.
“Honestly, everything's been so crazy these days…” Abigail mumbled, “I got a job, lost it, lost my mind, and left my house within a span of two weeks.”
“Damn. That's hard.”
Nicholas looked around as if to see anyone could overhear their conversation. Then, leaning closely, he whispered with his coarse yet gentle voice.
“Hey\, look… I haven't been doing too well either. My life was ******* from the moment I left that damn place. To be honest\, I have a lot to ask you\, but that has to be a conversation for another time. For now\, what do you think about crashing at my place? You don't look like you're up to any good.”
Abigail was surprised at the proposal. It was a very tempting yet dangerous one.
“No- I mean, why would you even say something like-”
“Oh, come on. It's not like we started being friends yesterday. We have known each other since forever.”
He turned around, giving a full view of his body and attire.
“And I hope that **** I said didn't actually scare you\, eh? It was a joke\, I didn't mean to do anything. Come on\, Abby\, do you even have anyone to trust right now? Don't I look like the perfect person you could lean on?”
Abigail was speechless. She stared at his jaded eyes, and for a second, she thought she could find warmth in those big muscular arms. He was bad news, and it couldn't be more obvious that he was trying to lure his prey to his cave, like a fox with a young lamb.
But legend has it that humans never learn.
“Fine,” Abigail hesitatingly replied, “But not for long. I will leave as soon as I decide on where to head to.”
She could not bring upon herself to meet his eyes. It was humiliating for him to find her in trouble all the time. They had a history that went way back, but maybe it was safe to assume that not even half of it was as pleasant as it seemed to occur.
When two broken hearts meet, it either brings upon salvation or ensues chaos. It was obvious to Abigail, from her past experiences, that she would come to regret this very decision in the near future.
She knew that she was cheating herself, and ruining her life by destroying the possibilities inside of her. But she was greedy.
Greedy for the warmth that had always eluded her, which she received as she walked down the pit of fire, and although many a tear fell, they could not compare to the fulfilment of her heart.
