Episode 13

“Yes, ma’am, we understand. It must be hard for you.”

“If you understand, then why isn’t my child here yet?!”

Violent screams echoed throughout the hallways which led to the headmaster’s office. Abigail and Bella ran as fast as they could, with their little feet, afraid of the temper of the lady.

As soon as they entered the room, their eyes met those of a woman of fairly tall stature, with perfectly coiled hair, flawless makeup, and designer clothes.

Her pristine appearance was like the epitome of vanity and selfishness, which masked her empty, cold, callous self and profound lack of empathy and disregard for others.

“Mother?”

Abigail walked up to the woman, who did not seem very pleased with all that was happening. “Why are you here? Is something the matter?”

“Abby\, I can see that you are still yet to learn how to behave. I knew I should not have expectations from a ******* child like you.”

She bit her lips in frustration, and looked away.

“Your father and I have divorced, and that devil has left all your responsibilities on me. It’s not like I wanted to give birth to you or become a mother!”

“Is that all you have to say?”

“Here’s the thing, Abby. We are leaving this place. I have packed all the stuff you will require, so there’s no need to waste any time. Your dear friend seems to be here already, so bid her farewell if you will, and come with me.”

There was not an ounce of love or sympathy in that voice. Every word struck Abigail’s heart like an arrow. Her dearest father abandoned her, her mother is not interested in her either, and it’s only a matter of time before she loses the only little possessions she had – the warmth of her teachers and friends.

“I... don’t want to leave, though.”

“What?”

Abigail shivered at her mother’s tone. It was a slip of tongue, but the fear was accompanied by the strange pleasure of defying the woman she hated the most.

“What did you say, Abigail? How do you even dare say such a thing? You must be dreaming if you think you and your silly little opinions matter. Stop provoking me.”

The woman was angry, her brows furrowed, and her jaws clenched. One would think they are insane to witness a mother, symbol of harmony and prosperity, to show such aggression towards her young child.

Abigail wanted to protest, but her mother grabbed her hands and stormed out of the office. No matter how hard she pulled, she couldn’t escape her grip. She begged her to let her go, but the woman showed no remorse to her pleas.

During such a scene, Bella, having gathered enough courage, interrupted the two.

“H-hello there! I’m Bella Howard, and I’m Abigail’s roommate. I hear that she will be leaving soon, do you mind if we have a talk alone for a while?”

She extended her hands and looked tensed.

But to her dismay, her hands were immediately slapped away.

“Get lost.”

Bella fell to the ground. Her hand swelled up, and her face reflected her hopelessness. She looked up, teary-eyed, for one last time to see her lovely roommate.

Abigail whispered a sorry, and while her eyes begged for rescue, she smiled, knowing full well that they might never be able to meet again.
