"Was the boy sick?" Saulo asked.
"No, why?"
"You asked if he was okay."
"I was unintentionally rude to him, and Fernando is a good person. I felt a twinge of pain, and he came to help me. He ran to get water when I said I needed to take my medicine. Then he said he liked doing my tasks alone. After that he got embarrassed and flustered."
"He doesn't know you and acted like any normal person. You're the one who's stressed out. And I've already told you what that's about."
"Oh no, Saulo! Don't give me that talk again. I already said that I don't even want to try to have a relationship with anyone. I've had enough of people's contempt and lack of tact."
"You've only been with two since your accident, Caique."
"Which were equal to a thousand. The disappointment was so much, I'm already fed up. And my stress has nothing to do with it and you know it. I'm tired of fighting."
"Don't say that, Caique. You're stressing me out already."
"You're the one who needs to get laid. You're stressed out about everything. Where's Camila or Jorge?"
"Hmm, neither one. Camila, even without saying anything to me, I realized she was getting too attached and I don't want to make her suffer. I'm not in love and I don't intend to be. And as for Jorge, that one is like me, he just wants sex."
"So, he's just like you."
"But I don't want sex with him and I don't know why. I'm tired. The good thing is he doesn't care and we move on. As much as I don't want to get involved with anyone, I'm tired of shallow people."
"I'm not the best person in the world to talk to about feelings with you, but I think you're too damn hot to just be in those encounters out there or with that thought of not getting attached."
"You're hot too."
"I was."
"Oh, stop! But changing the subject, what was that your mom was up to?"
"Just another display of the prejudiced person she is. Picking on Fernando for being black and not considering him worthy of working in the President's office? Seriously?"
"CAIQUE!" Matheus walked into my office yelling and Saulo rolled his eyes. He was the epitome of mockery.
"Is this any way to come in here, Matheus?"
"Don't give me that president crap. I own this damn place as much as you do. Our mother is all upset and hurt by the way you spoke to her."
"Did she tell you why?"
"Of course, she explained about the guy your incompetent secretary put in the office here."
"And you, as a lawyer, think it's okay that the guy is not qualified to work here just because he is black?" Matheus swallowed hard and was speechless. "Fernando is very qualified. His resume is very good, he's working here cleaning the company because it's what came up and he needed it. It's an honest job like any other, but of course our dear mother only saw the color of his skin. So you lower your voice with me because I won't tolerate her prejudices in here, let alone your tantrums defending her."
"I already talked to her about these prejudice things." He tried to disguise. "These people are full of"mimimi"and soon there's a lawsuit."
"He could already be sued just for that speech of yours. If you have nothing more useful to say, let me work, Matheus."
"And you don't work, Saulo?" My friend looked disdainfully at my brother.
"I've already seen eight clients and it's not even noon. And you? Did you clock in today just to defend your mother? Or did you come to actually contribute your work?"
"Leave me alone." Matheus walked out, stomping his feet and slamming the door. "I took a deep breath."
A few seconds later, another knock announced Flavia's entry.
"Yes, Flavia."
"Mr. Caique, I'm sorry. Mr. Matheus wouldn't even let me announce his arrival or allow me to get up from my chair."
"Did he say anything smart to you?"
"Just that I shouldn't even get up since I didn't know how to do my job right."
"From now on you have full autonomy to answer him or my mother if they disrespect you. I won't tolerate that here."
"Yes, sir."
"Don't forget, Flavia."
"You can be sure of that. I wanted to take this opportunity to ask you something."
"Go ahead."
"I have a spine exam scheduled in two days to see if I need surgery on my herniated disc."
"Of course you can go."
"But I didn't want to leave you hanging and thinking ahead, if the surgery does happen, if you want, I have a trusted person to fill in for me while I'm out for exams or even surgery. I don't know what you intend to do."
