The accident
"My God, this rain won't stop!" I said, looking out the window.
"The weather forecast said the cold front will last until Friday," Fabio replied. "And with this downpour we need to be extra careful."
"That's right," I answered, texting Saulo about our date.
"We're going to hit some traffic, Mr. Caique."
"What can we do, Fabio? The important thing is that we arrive safely. Don't worry."
Almost forty minutes later and we were still on the Lagoa Barra High Road, as there was a lot of traffic in some places. The moment it seemed to improve and Fabio managed to drive without stopping so much, my phone rang and I saw my mother's name on the screen. I rolled my eyes before answering.
"What is it, Mom?"
"WHAT IS IT? HOW DARE YOU ASK ME THAT?"
"Hey!! Why are you yelling?"
"LOOK AT THE INTERNET, YOU IMBECILE. YOUR FATHER WOULD BE DISGUSTED BY YOU RIGHT NOW."
Startled by her outburst, I asked Fabio to lend me his cell phone so I wouldn't hang up on my mother and I looked on the internet. The page of a major news outlet had a picture of me, naked, from behind, telling everyone that I was gay and that I was finally stopping being so straight. That scared me because I recognized that it was a picture from today.
"Mom..." I said with blurred vision and my heart racing.
"MOM? NOW YOU COME TALKING ABOUT 'MOM'? I don't know who you are, Caique."
"OF COURSE YOU KNOW WHO I AM, DAMN IT!" I lost control and cried at the same time.
The more I browsed the internet, the more I found things talking about me and even about the construction of the mall. And worse, I saw other pictures of me and all in the same motel I went to with Natanael.
"I don't believe this!!!"
"You are shameless, Caique. Look at the kind of man Augusto left as President of our company. By the way, you are not a man. You are a faggot!!!"
"STOP IT, MOM!!!!" I shouted at her.
"Mr. Caique, calm down! Please calm down, you can get sick like this" - Fabio spoke worriedly, driving, and from time to time looked at me. I was distraught, crying, and couldn't believe what I was seeing. If the photos were from when I was with Natanael, it could only have been him who took them, as they weren't even on the street but inside the room!
"I WILL REMOVE YOU FROM THE PRESIDENCY OF THE COMPANY, CAIQUE! YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO OUR FAMILY. ANYBODY, A FILTHY QUEER. CURSE THE DAY I BROUGHT YOU INTO THE WORLD!"
I dropped the cell phone on the seat and surrendered to crying with my hands on my face. My life was destroyed. I had been forcibly pulled out of the closet and my mother would make my life hell. I would lose the Presidency and what I feared most would happen, I would be a disappointment to my father. His last name was violently exposed to everyone's judgment.
I would be the laughing stock, maybe partners would end partnerships because of the scandal.
"Are you okay, sir?" - Fabio continued distressed and I couldn't calm down.
"Everyone found out, Fabio! Everyone found out I'm gay."
"My God, how?"
"It was Natanael, I'm sure. There are photos posted on the internet of our moments inside that motel room."
"Jesus Christ."
My phone started ringing and Saulo appeared on the screen.
"SAULO, HELP ME!!!"
"Caique, damn it! Where are you? What the hell happened?"
I'm going to kill that guy! It was him, wasn't it?
"For sure, it was. Our recorded moments are inside the room. He was photographing me this whole time and I didn't see. There are pictures of me sleeping, of me in the shower, totally naked, our legs together. I was thinking he was answering his mother or sister, as he said, and the bastard was photographing me!!!"
"I'm going to turn Rio de Janeiro upside down looking for him! You can be sure and sue everyone, even the newsroom! Where are you?"
"On Lagoa Barra Road, the traffic is terrible and the rain won't stop. I'm desperate, Saulo. My mother is going to take me out of the Presidency!" - I was on the verge of a breakdown.
"Calm down, Caique. Please, calm down! Pass the phone to Fabio."
"Calm down, Mr. Caique. We'll be there soon." - Fabio looked at me briefly just to say that and I held out the phone for him to take.
After that, it all happened so fast.
A huge tree fell, due to the storm, in the middle of the road, causing a van that was in front of us to violently crash into its thick trunk and our car crashed into its rear even harder.
Fabio didn't even have a chance to brake.
The noise was deafening and my body was thrown from the back seat, I partially passed over the passenger seat and my face hit the dashboard with full force. I was completely dizzy and felt a violent pain in my neck. I could hear Saulo's voice in the distance shouting my name on the phone. The phone was lying on the floor of the car. When I looked at Fabio briefly, I saw that the airbag had deployed and my driver was supported by it, but looked unconscious.
But I didn't even have a chance to react to what would happen next. I heard a horn honking incessantly and, slowly, I looked back, resting my arms on the seat, in time to see a truck coming at high speed without braking and I widened my eyes, only to see and feel the worst happen.
The truck crashed into our car and an excruciating pain knocked me out completely.
