— Damn! — We heard knocks on the door, and Flavia walked in.
— Sorry to interrupt, Mr. Caique.
— You're not, Flavia. What happened?
— Because of the issue last month that we had with the cleaning company, your mother wants it no longer outsourced but instead to hire directly.
— She mentioned this to me at the last meeting, and I even agreed. We've had problems with two companies and I'm tired of it. But we need to sort this out quickly, our contract with them ends in three days.
— She asked me to screen resumes on the job site for the interviews that she herself wanted to conduct. But she called this morning, saying she wouldn't make it because of Mrs. Beatriz's cocktail party and to send the interviews to HR. Now I've selected 50 people as she requested, and I don't know what to do. Will we manage to do this in the time we have? Since HR is already busy with the Young Apprentice selection process.
— She was going to interview? Poor people. Where did she get that idea of interviewing?
— Saulo was sarcastic, and I looked at him.
— I don't know why she needs so many people; my mother can be excessive too. We need 19 employees to cover everything the current company does, right?
— That's correct.
— Let HR handle the initial interviews. They're faster and it won't take up too much of their time, but ask that as soon as the 19 people we need stand out, you be informed and then send them to me in an organized manner.
— Are you going to interview too? — Saulo looked at me with a smirk.
— We've been with outsourced firms all these years, but now these people will be made permanent in my company, and I want to meet everyone I'm bringing in here. I want them to know me too. Let's make the best of both worlds; it won't overburden HR, which has this important process to manage, and I get to meet the new employees. What time is the first interview scheduled, Flavia?
— At 1 PM.
— Ok. So, 25 people are coming today?
— Yes.
— Coordinate this. If anyone today stands out, send them to me. Do I have anything important this afternoon?
— No, no meetings. Just the contract reviews you requested.
— Alright then, I'll be here working, and as soon as someone turns up, send them in.
— Yes, sir.
— Is Matheus at the company?
— Yes, in a meeting with a client.
— Ok.
Flavia left the room and I walked over to my desk under Saulo's watchful eyes.
— Are you going to keep staring at me now?
— We're not done talking, Caique.
— Alright, but now I have to work. I have interviews to conduct.
— It's going to be tiring, do you really want this? The HR team is great at this. The team is really good.
— I know, that's why I trust their initial selection, but I really want to meet everyone.
— It's your call, I'll swing by when I have some time. Today I'm having lunch with a client.
— Ok.
I watch Saulo leave and take a deep breath. I was very honest with him and didn’t regret it. Of all the people around me, he's the one I regard the most. So I couldn't hide my feelings. He didn't deserve that.
I look around my office, and at least in my heart, I have the peace and certainty that I haven’t disappointed my old man. My father is well represented as long as I’m alive.
I hold the pen in my hands that he gifted me when he handed over the Presidency. It has run out, but it's here in front of me holding me like a lifeboat. Every time my sadness tries to swallow me, I look at it and cling on. But sadly, this sea is becoming too strong and deep, and I feel that any moment now, I will no longer be able to fight its current.
