Rafael smiled bitterly, his eyes red with despair. Today, he proposed to Kenya and not only did she reject him, but she also humiliated him with cruel words in front of his colleagues, showing no compassion.
"I imagine you were already surprised with the pleasant news," Rafael said sadly as he took a sip of his beer.
"Yes, she was surprised, although what bothers me is that I warned both of them," Susie said.
Rafael was Susie's older brother, a 30-year-old man, a university professor, and the owner of a pub. He was Kenya's ex-boyfriend, and he never imagined that his thirst for revenge against the traitor Kenya would take him down an unexpected path with the person he least liked, his unfriendly sister-in-law, Keyza.
"Dad, you need to take action because Keyza assaulted me," Kenya cried.
"Kenya, please try to understand her perspective for a moment," Antonio said, visibly affected.
"Don't defend her, Antonio," Ivana said.
"Enough of this argument, the neighbors will notice," Andrei said.
Keyza listened to the commotion outside, and it seemed that Antonio had returned. But that was no longer her concern. She had little time to pack before Susie arrived and started a real battle against her relatives. She called her aunt to say goodbye.
"I'm very sorry, Keyza. I feel so ashamed of what's happening," Anastasia said.
"I know, aunt, and that's why I'm leaving," Keyza said sadly.
"I think that's the right thing to do, something you should have done a long time ago."
"I need you to gather all my things, and when I find a place to move, I'll send you the address."
Keyza looked at what used to be her room for so long and felt no emotion because she had never been made to feel at home, no matter how hard she tried.
"I bid farewell to all this, and I have no intention of returning," she told herself.
Keyza struggled as she dragged her heavy suitcases. Her parents were so focused on consoling Kenya that neither noticed the melancholic girl walking towards the entrance, burdened by two enormous suitcases. Only Antonio caught a glimpse from the corner of his eye and felt a deep emptiness because he had disappointed a great woman. But she was not the successor of the Bagirova family, except for Kenya, and his ambition had overcome the love he once felt for her.
"Excuse me, Andrei, but I think I saw Keyza leaving through the door," Antonio said.
Andrei noticed the open door and walked towards it. He couldn't let her leave like that, or it would cause a big scandal. He went up to his room and realized that several of his things were missing.
"I'm glad to see you're okay," Susie said, giving him a tight hug.
Fausto loaded Keyza's two enormous suitcases into his car and watched his friend, feeling so angry at Antonio for hurting her in that way.
"Don't cry, Keyza. The idiot Antonio doesn't deserve a single tear from you," Fausto said.
Keyza opened the car door and looked towards the house she had grown up in. She realized it was time to leave that place because it wasn't where she belonged, even though she felt like she had never truly belonged there.
"Where are you going, Keyza?" Andrei asked, tapping on the window.
Andrei couldn't believe his docile daughter was leaving their house. Now, what would they tell people? They had made it seem like the breakup was mutual.
"Keyza, wait a moment," Andrei said.
Andrei knocked on the window with increasing force, but Keyza ignored him. Of all her family members, he was the only one she expected something from, but he had disappointed her, and she would never forgive him.
"Let's go, Fausto," she said.
"Are you sure you don't want to talk to your dad?"
Keyza touched her wound on her forehead, and the pain she felt answered that question.
"My dad has already said what he needed to say," she replied bitterly.
Andrei watched as his daughter drove away in that car, and he knew he had acted very poorly. But Kenya was pregnant with Antonio's child, and she was his successor, so he had to protect her. Keyza, on the other hand, was a rebellious girl from whom he expected nothing, a complete waste.
"Did you expect Andrei to stay in this house?" Anastasia asked.
"She doesn't need to leave because this will always be her home."
"Andrei, I don't know why you allow this abuse, but I assure you that you will regret it."
"Even though you're my sister, I won't allow you to have an opinion about my family."
"I know I'm just a bastard unlike Keyza."
Andrei watched his sister with annoyance because he had his reasons for treating Keyza that way, but due to the shame he felt, he couldn't let the truth about why Keyza was the outcast of the family come to light.
"Give me your phone," Susie demanded.
Keyza obediently handed her friend the device, closing her eyes because her head hurt.
"What are you planning to do, Susie?" Keyza asked curiously.
"You'll see, just relax because we're going to Rafael's house on the outskirts of the city."
Susie blocked the numbers of Andrei, Ivana, Kenya, and Antonio on her phone. She did the same with her phone and Fausto's, considering that Antonio knew who her friends were. She also deactivated their social media accounts after making a post on Keyza's social media, unilaterally announcing the breakup due to infidelity. This caused a wave of comments among their friends, as everyone wanted to know where Keyza was, but no one could locate her.
"Dad, where is Keyza?" Kenya shouted.
Kenya was the subject of many malicious comments, and no matter how much she explained herself, the damage was done. She would always be labeled as the sister who stole her own boyfriend.
"Don't worry, Keyza, no one knows about the existence of this property," Fausto assured her.
"You can stay there for as long as you need so you won't have any contact with them temporarily until you're ready to confront them," Susie said.
"Although you don't need to confront them, Keyza, please don't do this to yourself," Fausto suggested.
"I won't go back, and I've already brought the most important things with me. The rest will be sent to me by my aunt when I find a new place to live."
"That sounds great, Keyza. Never look back or speak to those idiots again," Susie suggested.
"Yes, Keyza, that's the best revenge you can have, living your best life, because confronting them won't give you closure."
"I know, because my parents will always be on my sister's side," Keyza said bitterly.
"I know that Kenya has a messed up reasoning, and Antonio is not worth it either."
"Don't bother with them after this. Please, don't do this to yourself anymore because it will be 4 against 1 if you confront them," Fausto said.
"We've arrived," Susie announced.
"Welcome," Rafael said, observing Keyza intently.
Despite working at the same university, Rafael and Keyza had always had a bad relationship, though they themselves didn't understand the reason.
"Are you hurt?" he asked with concern.
Keyza was surprised that Rafael noticed her injury immediately. She touched the wound and winced a little because it was painful.
"Yes, but it's nothing."
"What happened?" Rafael asked with interest.
"A table got in my way."
"Stupid table," Rafael said jokingly.
Keyza smiled shyly because she didn't want to seem so pathetic. She couldn't admit that her dad had slapped her and she had lost her balance, hitting the kitchen counter.
Fausto and Susie noticed that both of them were fine and got into the car, surprising Rafael.
"Where are you two planning to go?" Rafael asked.
"Rafa, we don't want Keyza's family to know her whereabouts, so we're going back to the city, and on Sunday afternoon, we'll come to get you both."
"Great," Keyza and Rafael said with annoyance at the same time.
