Keyza wept for several hours until her head ached from dehydration. She needed pain relief and mustered the courage to head to the kitchen where she found her mother and sister, but Antonio was nowhere to be seen. To her surprise, her mother came forward and wrapped her in a consoling embrace.
"I know you're in pain, and I can't begin to understand how you feel."
"How could Kenya betray me like this?" Keyza asked, shattered.
Ivana comforted her, but her expression was one of boredom, as she wasn’t genuinely interested in the task at hand.
"Keyza, take all the time you need, but remember to find forgiveness in your heart to pardon your sister, for there's nothing else to be done about love."
Keyza wasn't surprised because, of course, Ivana would side with Kenya and merely wanted forgiveness for appearances. Abruptly drawing away from her mother, she looked on in bewilderment.
"Have you lost your mind, Mom?" she asked incredulously.
"Keyza, mind your language; I am your mother," Ivana admonished.
Keyza immediately sensed something was off and gave her mother a piercing look, realizing Ivana couldn’t meet her gaze.
"Did you know about this all along, Mom?" Keyza asked, horrified.
"What matters, Keyza, is that they are in love, and you need to accept it."
A wave of revulsion overtook Keyza, and she seethed with deep anger. Kenya had always sabotaged the good in her life, and this wasn't the first time. Frustrated and to her mother's astonishment, she grabbed Kenya's hair and slapped her hard.
"You lowlife, Kenya! All these men, and you choose my fiance? What sort of rotten love is that when you had a fiance, too?" Keyza yelled, continuing to pull her startled sister’s hair.
"Don't hurt your sister, remember she's pregnant," Ivana implored anxiously.
Keyza, usually friendly and gentle when dealing with them, was now consumed with rage. Though Ivana tried to separate them, the conflict rang throughout the house. Suddenly, a voice rang out in the kitchen.
"Let go of her immediately, Keyza!" commanded the newcomer.
Andrei, father to both girls, had a booming voice that echoed through the room. Keyza released her sister, knowing fully well there would be repercussions.
"What is happening here?" he asked, astonished.
"Dad, Antonio and I talked to Keyza about us today, and she just lost it," Kenya replied, her cheeks red against her pale skin.
"Is that true, Keyza?" Andrei asked, seething with anger.
"You knew too, Dad?" Keyza retorted, deeply disappointed.
She shook her head in realization that her father was also in on the secret. "Of course, you knew. When it's about defending your little princess, nothing's impossible," Keyza said bitterly.
Her father slapped her, and the impact made her stumble into the kitchen table. The blow left her numb; the physical pain was nothing compared to her heart's absence. Blood trickled from a wound, yet no one seemed moved by it—they were solely focused on tending to Kenya's perfect face.
"This house is a den of snakes," Keyza stated.
"If your sister has a miscarriage, you'll be to blame," Andrei declared.
"I couldn't care less about what happens to that offspring," Keyza shot back.
"Enough, vile woman," Ivana snapped.
Covering her wound, Keyza approached the door, gave the three her middle finger, signifying an end, for she would seek their approval no more. She made her way to her room, locked the door, sat behind it, and contemplated why her parents treated her so. Rising, she realized it was just a flesh wound and stopped the bleeding with a band-aid. She started packing her suitcase—she needed to leave immediately. It was six in the evening, and she had no idea where to go, as the split with Antonio had left her financially strained for the coming months. She decided to call her friend Susie.
"I knew this fool would call me," Susie remarked angrily.
"Susie, darling, forgive her, please. We both know she has no one else," Fausto, Susie's husband, chided.
"I'm doing it because you're asking," Susie conceded.
"You care about her and love her like a sister," Fausto affirmed.
"Antonio's affair with Kenya has been a thorn in my brother's side too; he's a mess. I really despise that woman."
"Look on the bright side, my love. She won't be your sister-in-law any longer," Fausto said with a smile.
Susie smiled at her husband's clever remark—she loathed Kenya, but her stubborn brother was smitten with her.
"You're so smart, my love," she said, kissing him.
The phone rang again. It wasn't that Susie didn't care about Keyza; she just wanted her to stew a bit before helping.
"Isn’t it a bit late to be calling?"
"Susie, I need your help," Keyza stated.
"I knew it," Susie said.
"You knew about it too?"
"Rafael just told me," Susie admitted.
"Don't worry, Susie. It's not your fault. After all, you warned me."
Susie detected the weary tone in her friend’s voice and knew she needed help.
"I'm on my way to get you, but it will take an hour. I'm not in the city."
"Thank you, Susie."
"Make sure to grab all your important documents."
Susie hung up and reached for her car keys. Her brother Rafael and now Keyza had worn her out.
"Rafa, you're on your own. Fausto and I need to fetch Keyza from the city."
