...
The chubby alpha listened to Noah's words and, feeling deeply mocked, wanted to pick a fight; but his companions knew him and saw his intentions. They rushed to intercept him, thus preventing him from doing something foolish that could affect them.
Although that didn't stop some people from turning around when they heard the noise. The boys had no choice but to give awkward smiles, pretending that nothing was happening, because it was not the same to watch the show as it was to be the show. Besides, a group like theirs wasn't used to being confronted by others, so they didn't know how to react.
Usually, they could say whatever they wanted and act however they pleased, and no one would limit them. But now they were at a banquet for a family far more powerful than their own; on top of that, the person they were facing was the official young master of it. They couldn't act rashly.
Each of the boys regretted their taunts, so they could only clench their jaws and not say anything that could get them into more trouble.
"Believe me, wherever I go, I'll be fine," Noah declared with pride imbued in every word, mercilessly ignoring the group's shame. "But I don't think the same of you. You should hurry now that I have given you this opportunity. I won't be so generous another day."
He saw the cynical smiles fade from the faces of each pampered child, especially the chubby alpha, apparently, the leader of the little calves.
None were satisfied with what they had heard, yet no one replied a single word. And this was because even though they knew that the boy in front of them turned out to be an imposter, the Ballestero family hadn't repudiated him on the spot. The mother of the family hadn't reacted, hadn't accepted it, but neither had she rejected it. Thus, in front of everyone, the imposter still retained the actual status. It was not up to them to reject him and take a wrong step.
If they wanted something like revenge, they should be patient and wait for the situation to stabilize. Until then, no one would dare be a stepping stone for their own family by making silly jokes that could offend a big shot.
"Young Noah, you don't think Leader Barlovento is here for you, do you?" the chubby guy asked mockingly, not reconciling himself to silence. The other boys looked at him in horror, even the beta boy who had previously tried to speak for Noah took a step forward, grabbing the alpha's arm to stop him.
"Jorge, stop it," he pleaded in a kind and submissive tone, but all he got was a blow to the hand that, at first glance, was painful. He withdrew his hand, holding back a couple of tears.
"Unpleasant," said the guy. "Don't you ever touch me again." The boy only managed to turn halfway around after excusing himself.
The situation was awkward for everyone else. The boys wanted to leave, but without Noah's permission, it was not possible. So they were forced to bear the consequences of their own actions.
"As I was saying, before that bastard interrupted me…" the guy continued, seeming to ignore his group's panic. More than one boy gave him a look that seemed to scream "shut up," but the message didn't get through to him, or he completely ignored it. "What my friends said about you, young Noah, was ill-timed; however, I ask you not to blame us. We are young, and we often talk nonsense. We all know that the Leader's fiance is young Angel. So if he came all the way here, it was surely to pick him up."
"Of course, I know something like that. Even until the unexpected event occurred, Angel was a very good friend of mine. And yet, you already saw how I was betrayed," exclaimed the black-haired boy with a bit of feigned pity. "However, there are some kids who think they have the right to link Leader Barlovento and me in a fraudulent relationship. Tell me, how should I proceed? Should we discuss this with the other person involved and clarify their doubts?"
Without exception, each of the boys excused themselves, giving false pretenses about someone calling them or that right at that moment, they remembered they were in the middle of an important errand. They were all afraid that Noah would carry out his threats, so they disappeared as fast as their legs would allow.
Noah watched sardonically as the group, which had previously spoken carelessly and arrogantly about others, vanished in a few seconds just because of a simple confrontation.
In the end, only the chubby alpha remained. His pimple-covered face was red with anger, giving an image both funny and unpleasant. He stared at Noah and took a step closer, with his nasty musky smell; the black-haired boy almost had to cover his nose to bear the stench.
"You're nothing but a fake jewel," he whispered in a scornful tone. The guy studied Noah from head to toe with a disgusting look, and continued speaking, in a voice only they could hear: "However, if you behave yourself and beg me, I might even consider picking you up once the Ballesteros kick you out. After all, who would keep the fake when you have the real thing by your side?"
Noah felt so disgusted he almost gagged; however, he didn't back down. He wasn't going to give the guy that pleasure. With a sarcastic smile, he stepped even closer to the man, so much so that their bodies were about to touch, and in the same contemptuous tone the other had used, though with a better performance, replied:
"Well, this fake jewel has more status, good taste, and influence than you will have in your entire short, miserable life." His voice was low, but no less venomous. "Go with your filthy proposals to that seedy casino you usually go to. Maybe you'll find someone of your level. And even so, they'll probably still be out of your league. The quality of their pr0st1tut3s will be above someone like you."
The chubby guy choked, sounding almost like a pig. The rage was evident on his ugly face, yet he didn't utter a single syllable in response. He was an idiot, but even an idiot like him knew that his past words had already exceeded the limit of his bravery and his family's influence. If he continued, he would truly anger the black-haired boy, and he wasn't sure he could withstand the retribution.
After letting out a snort, he turned away without another word. The irritation was almost palpable around him, like a black, murky bubble moving with him. Pushing past a couple of people who cursed him under their breath, he soon disappeared from sight.
The guests were so focused on the person in the wheelchair that no one noticed the nasty interaction between the two. Except, perhaps, the person who was attracting everyone's attention.
Noah watched the chubby guy's back as he walked away and scoffed in his heart.
Yes, many could rejoice in hiding, and yet no one took a single step forward to laugh in the villain's face.
The black-haired boy looked up and met the one who occupied his recent thoughts. The man had been in a wheelchair for two years after his car accident, and it didn't really matter. Well, first of all, he was the heir to the Barloventos, the most powerful family in City H, and one of the main powers of Country M; and secondly, although his legs were unable to take a step, his pheromones were still those of a dominant alpha. With either option, most already had the battle lost for five lifetimes.
