In the bathroom, a young woman who was no longer a virgin sighed with relief. This girl was named Disya.
For more than a week since that heated night occurred, Disya had felt unsettled due to her missed period. Just yesterday, after spending two days at home, she bought a pregnancy test to confirm her fears.
As it turned out, the test displayed only a single line, indicating a negative result. This morning, all her worries were put to rest when she finally began her menstrual cycle. This meant that the one-night event in London had no consequences, a fact that Disya Fanesya found immensely relieving, as if fate were on her side.
"Phew, I don't know what I would've done if I'd been pregnant," Disya smiled at herself in the bathroom mirror.
She could have managed to take care of a baby, had she actually been pregnant, but there was one daunting thought: facing her parents with the news of her pregnancy.
After freshening up, Disya prepared for an interview at a leading company in the city, a firm that had been flourishing for ages.
When she was in London, Disya and her two friends had submitted their job applications via email, and to their surprise, they received interview invitations once back in their home country.
Dressed smartly in a tight white skirt and a salem-colored blouse with neck straps, Disya let her hair down in soft curls at the ends.
Disya was elegant and beautiful; she stood out with her natural charm. Although many men from various backgrounds showed interest in her, she was not one to fall in love easily. Disya Fanesya followed her heart and would not take advantage of the men pursuing her.
"Mum ..." Disya approached her mother Diana in the kitchen, who was preparing breakfast. Shortly after, her father appeared, dressed in sharp office attire, ready for work.
"Where are you off to, looking so dressed up, Sya?" her father, Frans Handoko, inquired.
"Didn't you know, Dad? Disya got an interview call today," Diana asked.
Frans shook his head and looked affectionately at his daughter, who was already grinning widely.
"Today, me, Dina, and Vivi all have interviews at the city's biggest company; surely you know it," Disya beamed. "We applied while on holiday in London, and who would've thought we'd get called so quickly?" In sharing, Disya could barely contain her excitement.
"I'm proud of you for achieving this on your own, without my help," Frans responded joyfully.
Disya returned her father's smile. "Pray for us, Dad, Mum. I want to succeed like Dad."
She was sincere in her aspirations to work as Frans did, even though he was only a finance director; the roles at stake required responsibility and integrity.
"Jobs like mine come with heavy responsibilities," Frans, who was acutely aware of this fact, didn't intend to intimidate her, just to be honest.
"It's alright, Dad. Every job has its own consequences to bear."
Frans smiled lovingly and stroked Disya's hair. "You've grown up, and I'm sure you'll make us proud."
His words pierced Disya's heart, and she had to force a smile, thinking about how her parents would react if they knew about what almost happened in London.
.
.
"You look stunning, Sya," Vivi gushed, spinning Disya around in admiration for her friend's beautiful appearance.
"You're exaggerating, as if you've never seen me look pretty," Disya's reply made Dina laugh out loud.
Realizing where they were, Dina quickly covered her mouth as Disya gave her a stern look.
"Sorry," Dina whispered.
The three of them stood outside the towering office building, alongside ten other applicants who were also invited for the interview. Only five were to be selected, each for different roles.
"Let's say a prayer before the battle," Dina suggested.
With a light chuckle, Disya and Vivi recited silent prayers for a smooth interview process.
"Amen."
They did their group high-five ritual and headed inside as the interview was about to start.
As they entered the lobby, the three women caught the attention of several employees, especially Disya, whose presence seemed to captivate the men.
"We're here for today's interview, could you please tell us where the interview room is?" Dina asked on behalf of the group, as two men walked in behind them, both headed to the same destination.
The two men just behind Disya smiled at the beautiful woman in front of them.
"Are you here for the interview too?" one of the men asked, eager for conversation.
"Yes, you too?" Disya responded in kind.
"Yes, we're all headed to the same place, and perhaps someday, to the same altar," the man flirted, grinning broadly.
"Ehh," Disya chuckled and shook her head at the man's cheeky compliment.
"Oh, someone's getting ahead of themselves with dreams," Vivi retorted, frowning at the man's forwardness.
"But hoping for a future together isn't a crime, is it?" the man replied, keeping the banter light.
Disya found herself laughing more at the newcomer's words.
"Please follow this employee, ladies. She'll escort you to the interview room," the receptionist instructed.
The group followed the staff member as instructed.
Before they stepped away, a luxury sedan pulled up to the lobby, signaling the arrival of their boss. The receptionist stepped away from her desk, and the other employees lined up to greet him, indicating his importance.
"It looks like our good-looking CEO is on his way," Dina joked, barely containing her excitement.
Disya shook her head and looked down as Dina and Vivi eagerly anticipated the appearance of the young and good-looking CEO.
They bowed their heads as two tall men walked past, their gazes focused straight ahead. One of them glanced over as he passed the trio, but with everyone's heads lowered, he couldn't see the person who had unknowingly attracted his attention.
"Wow, I can hardly breathe," Dina pressed her hand to her racing heart.
"I'll report you to Jino," Vivi threatened lightly.
"Watch your mouth, or I might just report you to Kiki," Dina shot back in annoyance.
"Let's stop fighting and go," Disya intervened, as they sometimes bickered like cat and mouse.
As the group resumed walking, with Dina and Vivi still bantering, Disya caught a glimpse of a man in the executives' elevator just as the doors were closing. He was looking at his phone, but when he looked up and their eyes met, Disya quickly looked away.
"Why did that turn my head?" Arfin, noticing Adam's peculiar behavior, asked.
"It's nothing," Adam shrugged off the question, pocketing his phone.
"Today's the interview with ten candidates, and we're only picking five. Do you want to interview them yourself?" Arfin queried his friend and superior.
"Why bother with ten when we can start with five?" Adam fingered his phone thoughtfully.
"There's a procedure, buddy. We need the best of ten to find the perfect five, especially for a financial position that demands selectiveness," Arfin explained, prompting a nod from Adam.
"Just manage it and let me know the outcome."
Adam stepped out of the elevator first once the doors slid open.
"You always like to be handed results without getting involved. Once in a while, you should step down and conduct the interviews yourself," Arfin followed Adam into his office, voicing his thoughts.
"Maybe someday I'll consider your advice," Adam replied casually.
Arfin could only snort. Adam was not keen on interviewing candidates directly, lest he becomes distracted by women who'd be more interested in him than answering the questions—a situation he'd already learned to avoid.
