Susana, as usual in the past week, started her day leaning over the toilet, vomiting the contents of her stomach. The spasms were horrible, exactly how she had been feeling for a few days.
"The breakfast is ready," D. Teresa's voice echoed through the house. She was in the kitchen, wondering why her daughter was taking so long that morning.
"I'll be right there, Mom!" Susana shouted back, looking at her reflection in the mirror. Her face looked terrible, her dark circles on her pale skin made her almost look like a character from a Halloween movie. Washing her face several times with cold water, she tried to alleviate that zombie-like appearance and quickly headed to the kitchen.
"You look very pale today," Susana's mother raised her eyebrows, looking at her daughter with concern as Susana sat down on one of the chairs in front of the table. "Are you still not feeling well?"
"It must still be my liver," Susana forced a smile, looking at her mother affectionately. "I probably haven't fully recovered from that crisis you had."
"Could it be?" Susana's mother observed her daughter's face, thinking for a moment. "As far as I know, a liver flush lasts for about 2 days...not weeks." Teresa placed the bread with cheese in front of her daughter, sounding a bit skeptical. "Don't you think you should see a doctor?"
"Don't worry, Mom, this will pass!" Susana forced a smile as she poured herself a cup of coffee with milk. "I must be entering that time of the month."
"Maybe," Susana's mother sighed, lost in thought. "You never feel too well during those days." But suddenly, she analyzed Susana for a few minutes, observing the untouched bread with cheese on her plate. "But losing your appetite...that's a first."
"What?" Susana was surprised by her mother's words, looking at her breakfast in front of her. She realized that she hadn't eaten anything yet. "Ah...I was just lost in my thoughts," she flashed a smile, avoiding showing her mother that her concern was greater than she let on. Taking a bite of her bread, she chewed vigorously, immediately taking a sip of her coffee with milk. Her smile disappeared as her stomach churned instantly. Placing her bread back on the plate, she quickly stood up. "If you don't mind, Mom, I'll go to my room."
"Susana..." Teresa stood up and quickly positioned herself in front of her daughter. "You know I only want what's best for you..." Taking a deep breath, she confronted her daughter. "You and Andre...you've done it, right?"
"What?" Susana widened her eyes, completely shocked by her mother's words.
"You know..." Susana's mother blushed. She was very close to her daughter, but her upbringing had been strict and she didn't openly discuss intimacy between two people, especially with her unmarried daughter. "You think I don't notice, but lately, you've been feeling unwell, not eating anything, and I hear you in the bathroom several times."
"Yes..." Susana swallowed hard, looking at her mother apprehensively. "And what does that have to do with Andre?"
"Oh, my daughter!" Teresa looked at Susana with some irritation. "He is also responsible for your pregnancy."
"Pregnancy?" Susana's breath was taken away, and she collapsed back into her chair. It couldn't be, she couldn't be pregnant. "Impossible..."
"You're not so young anymore not to know how babies are made," Susana's mother sighed at her daughter's reaction. "Go to Dr. Anibal. If the tests come back positive, Andre has to take responsibility."
"Listen, Mom, it's probably just something I ate that didn't agree with me." Susana stood up abruptly. "But if it makes you feel better..." She added, smiling in understanding. Ever since her father disappeared, they only had each other to rely on. "I'll take care of myself." She hugged her mother and immediately headed to her room.
There was something she hadn't mentioned, her period was also late and with everything that was happening, the fear of what would come from the doctor's visit settled in her whole body and soul. Closing the door behind her, she let herself be consumed by panic. How could she explain to Andre, to her mother, something she herself didn't understand? It had been a month already and that stranger still visited her several times in her dreams, ever since that fateful night, but he never revealed himself completely. If she were pregnant, she wouldn't even know how to recognize the father of her baby. His face was a blur, the only memory that remained were his almond-colored eyes, with a strange gleam, his hair almost golden, and especially his attractive body, his caresses and the touch of his lips. He had shown a desire, an adoration, a tenderness she had never felt before with Andre.
Shaking her head as if that would make such thoughts disappear, she rushed to the bathroom, taking off her pajamas, and jumped under the hot water of the shower. That cursed night would forever mark her destiny, but it wouldn't stop her from taking control of her life, she had plans for the future and she would move forward.
Susana took a deep breath. Taking a quick shower, she quickly got ready to leave, putting on jeans, a blouse, quickly fixing her hair. Some makeup would help her tired appearance. Putting on her open-toed sandals, she rushed out of her room to the nearest doctor's office in town, betting that she wasn't pregnant but instead had a nervous gastritis due to so much worry since that fateful night.
"Miss Susana, your test results are ready!" the young office employee kindly announced. "Dr. Anibal can see you now."
"Thank you!" Susana took a deep breath before getting up from the chair in the waiting room, but it did nothing to calm the trembling in her legs, her nerves were on edge and even with the mental mantra that she wasn't pregnant, the fear grew stronger.
"Miss Susana!" Dr. Anibal examined the papers in front of him once again and immediately looked at his patient. "I have seen your test results." Smiling broadly, he added, "Congratulations, you're going to be a mother."
"What?" Susana's voice was supposed to be a scream, but her throat suddenly closed with shock, limiting her breath and causing her to faint... right then and there...
