Chapter 10

I guess (Brittany replied) Well, I don't really know where to begin. I guess I should start by saying that I was raised in a private school that was run by the church of saint Mary. I don't remember my childhood before that though, nor do I remember my parents. The school was more of an orphanage for girls. There were a lot of us there. Next to the orphanage school was the church. You could see a beautiful view from my window: a beautiful garden, tiny people walking near the church. I could also see the church spire. The church spire was a complement to the tree tops. As they moved in every breeze it was their stalwart companion, the strong silence of the aged rock that built it. In a way it was a symbol of love, that the truth of love stays so true and still so that all else is free to dance as it will. (Brittany smiled and clenched a little cross as she told her companion her childhood).

- I see. Do you really believe in all that. (Asked John.)

(P.S. the drivers man is John, he told his name to Brittany at the start of the trip)

- "All that", what's that supposed to mean? (Asked Brittany sort of surprised)

- God. Do you really believe he exists?

There was a bit of a pause, as Brittany tried to understand how he could say such a thing

- Of-ofcourse! How could you say such a thing?! Ofcourse God is real! He watches over us, listens to our wishes and helps us when we are in need of his assistance! Everything God has done is beautiful and amazing: from the people themselves, to the the creatures and churches! (Said Brittany with great pride)

- Churches? Don't you find it ironic? (Said John)

- Ironic?...

- Well yeah. It's a great irony that the mighty churches were and are built from the cruel labours of the poor and gloried the costumed men who knew nothing of what love really calls us to do - to really protect and serve with love, with empathy, with a will to see others as they are. The obsession that man must work for the meanest survival levels ,rather than being elevated into a position where they can work for love with solid mental health, is the death of us all. And should we learn that and honour the real human hardships that built the church instead of the egos and greed that cloaked themselves in holy words, maybe the spires would become more pure, radiate a more egalitarian ambiance. (Said John calmly, as he replied with his monologue)

- I- (Brittany was just about to reply, but the two horses suddenly stopped making the carriage crash into a tree on the road side. Brittany screamed)

She sat there screaming, glued to the seat of the wrecked carriage. She couldn't stop screaming and panicking. The driver however, calm as ever, directed her out and stopped her screaming. The exterior of his carriage was even worse than Brittany had thought it might have been. Brittany carefully started praying, being thankful that she was alive to do so.

- What now? (Brittany carefully asked John)

- You're on your own.

- On my own....?

- Yup. Go straight up the road and don't stop, by sunrise you should reach the mansion.

- You mean I'll actually have to walk all the way there through the forest?! At night!!!

- It's either that, or staying here trying to fix the carriage. It will probably take about 2-3 days. You think you'll be able to stay in the forest for 2-3 days?

- I see... Thanks for getting me this far.

- Yeah, sure. (John handed Brittany a lantern. She took it, thanked him and set out into the dark forest on foot).
