The office was quiet, the only sound the rhythmic ticking of the clock.
Maura stretched, rolling her stiff shoulder as she finally closed her laptop. One and a half hours later, and she was finally done.
She glanced at the sofa. Randolph was asleep.
She hadn't expected him to actually stay. Yet there he was, his tall frame stretched out, his breathing steady, his features relaxed in sleep. He looked different like this. Less guarded. Less calculating.
Without thinking, she stood and walked toward him, her eyes tracing his face. He always carried himself with such control, such presence. But here... He looked almost human.
