Chapter 6: The assistant's Arrival

The receptionist quickly picked up the phone and dialed a number. Maya could hear the sound of a voice on the other end, but she couldn't make out what was being said.

After a few moments, the receptionist hung up the phone and looked up at Maya. "Mr. Rykard's assistant will be down to see you shortly," she said.

Maya nodded, her eyes never leaving the receptionist's face. She knew that she was being watched, that the receptionist was probably reporting back to Alexander Rykard's team.

A few minutes later, a tall, imposing man stepped out of the elevator. He was dressed in a tailored suit, and his eyes seemed to bore into Maya's soul.

"Mrs. Rykard," he said, his voice firm but polite. "I'm Mr. Rykard's assistant. He's...ah...indisposed at the moment, but I'd be happy to speak with you."

Maya raised an eyebrow. "Indisposed?" she repeated. "I don't think so. I want to see Alexander Rykard, and I want to see him now."

The assistant's eyes narrowed. "I'm afraid that's not possible, Mrs. Rykard," he said. "Mr. Rykard is a very busy man, and he doesn't have time to see everyone who demands an audience."

Maya's eyes flashed with anger. "I'm not just anyone," she said, her voice cold. "I'm his wife. And I'm not leaving until I see him."

The assistant's expression didn't change, but Maya could sense a flicker of uncertainty behind his eyes. He knew that she wasn't going to back down, and he wasn't sure how to handle her.

"I'll...ah...go and check with Mr. Rykard," he said finally. "Please, wait here."

Maya nodded, a cold smile spreading across her face. She knew that she was getting closer to the truth, and she was ready to do whatever it took to uncover it.

Maya nodded, her eyes never leaving the receptionist's face. She could sense a hint of unease behind the receptionist's polite smile, and she wondered what was being said about her behind closed doors.

As she waited, Maya took in her surroundings. The lobby was sleek and modern, with polished marble floors and a high ceiling. A large fountain bubbled softly in the center of the room, adding to the sense of tranquility.

But Maya wasn't fooled. She knew that beneath the surface, the Rykard empire was a complex web of power and deceit. And she was determined to expose it.

After a few minutes, a tall, imposing figure emerged from the elevator. He was dressed in a tailored suit, and his eyes were cold and calculating.

"Mrs. Rykard," he said, his voice firm but polite. "I'm Mr. Rykard's assistant. Please, follow me."

Maya's eyes narrowed as she stood up. She didn't like the way the assistant was looking at her, as if she was some kind of threat.

"I'm not going anywhere until I see Alexander," she said, her voice firm.

The assistant's expression didn't change, but Maya could sense a flicker of annoyance behind his eyes.

"I'm afraid that's not possible," he said. "Mr. Rykard is...indisposed. But I'm authorized to speak on his behalf."

Maya's eyes flashed with anger. She knew that she was being stonewalled, and she was determined to push back.

"I don't think so," she said, her voice cold. "I want to see Alexander. Now."
