chapter 2 : Coma

As the nurse busied herself with checking Maya's vitals, Maya's mind wandered back to the memories that had resurfaced. She saw herself as Avery Wells, standing in the grand ballroom, surrounded by the opulent decor and the man with the cold, calculating eyes.

Who was he?

And why did his presence fill her with such dread?

Maya's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the nurse's voice. "Maya, I'm going to go get the doctor. He'll want to hear about these...memories of yours."

Maya nodded, her eyes never leaving the nurse's face. "What do you think is going on with me?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

The nurse's expression turned sympathetic. "I'm not sure, dear. But we'll figure it out. You're safe now."

As the nurse left the room, Maya felt a sense of unease settle over her. She knew that she had to uncover the secrets of her past life, no matter how painful they might be. And she knew that she had to do it alone.

The door creaked open, and a tall, imposing figure entered the room. "Good morning, Maya," he said, his voice deep and commanding. "I'm Dr. Lee. I've been taking care of you since you...ah...woke up."

Maya's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean, woke up?"

Dr. Lee's expression turned guarded. "You've been in a coma, Maya. For a very long time."

Maya's mind reeled as she processed the doctor's words. A coma? How was that possible?

And what had happened to her during that time?

As Dr. Lee began to explain, Maya felt her world spinning out of control. She knew that she had to hold on to her memories, no matter how fragmented they were. They were the key to unlocking the secrets of her past life.

And the truth about who she truly was.

Dr. Lee's words were like a tidal wave, crashing over Maya and threatening to pull her under. A coma? For how long? She felt like she was drowning in questions, with no lifeline in sight.

"How long?" Maya asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Dr. Lee's expression turned somber. "You've been in a coma for...ah...twenty years, Maya."

Maya's mind reeled. Twenty years? That was impossible. She would have been...what, twelve years old? Thirteen?

"What happened to me?" Maya asked, her eyes locked onto Dr. Lee's.

Dr. Lee hesitated, as if unsure of how much to reveal. "You were in an accident, Maya. A car accident. You suffered severe head injuries...and...ah...you've been in a coma ever since."

Maya's thoughts were racing. An accident? A coma? It didn't make sense. She remembered being Avery Wells, standing in that grand ballroom...but how did she get from there to here?

As Dr. Lee continued to explain, Maya felt her memories stirring, like a beast awakening from a deep slumber. She saw flashes of a life she didn't recognize, of people and places that seemed familiar yet foreign.

And then, like a key turning in a lock, Maya remembered something. A name. A face. A voice.

"Alexander," Maya whispered, her eyes locked onto Dr. Lee's.

Dr. Lee's expression turned guarded. "What about Alexander, Maya?"

Maya's voice was barely above a whisper. "He's the one...he's the one who did this to me."

Dr. Lee's eyes narrowed. "I think we've talked enough for today, Maya. You need to rest."

But Maya was beyond rest. She was beyond exhaustion. She was driven by a singular focus: to uncover the truth about her past life, and the man who had destroyed her.
