Chapter 2
Beside Naya sat Serena, her posture just as rigid, her face just as emotionless. Her dark eyes, void of warmth, were fixed on the fragile form of their mother. She neither fidgeted nor sighed, her presence more like a shadow than a living, breathing person.
The room was thick with sorrow, but Serena remained untouched by it—or at least, that’s how it seemed.
A soft patter of footsteps broke the heavy silence
Little Hailey, entered the room, her brown curls bouncing with each step. She clutched a small rag doll to her chest, her big brown eyes wide with confusion. She looked from Naya, who was weeping and then to Serena, who sat like a ghost in human form.
Hailey Caldwell (3)
Sewena?
Serena's gaze finally shifted to the small girl in front of her
Serena Caldwell (15)
What is it, Hailey?
Hailey Caldwell (3)
Where are my bwudders? I want to pway.
The room went utterly still. Naya let out a chocked sob. Serena shut her eyes.
Serena, however, did not falter. She only stared at Hailey for a long moment before responding, her voice devoid of any emotion.
Serena Caldwell (15)
They're not here anymore.
Hailey Caldwell (3)
*Pout* Not here?
Hailey Caldwell (3)
*Tilt her head slightly* Did they go to town? When will they come back?
Hailey's eyes flickered to their mother, still and weak in bed. She took a step closer
Hailey Caldwell (3)
Mama's sick?
Naya covered her mouth with her hand, her shoulders trembling.
Naya Caldwell (8)
*crying silently*
Serena Caldwell (15)
*nod while looking down* Yes.
Hailey Caldwell (3)
She gonna be okey?
Serena Caldwell (15)
I don't know.
Hailey glanced between them, her small hands tightening around her doll. Something in the air felt wrong to her, even if she couldn’t understand why. She reached up and tugged at Serena’s sleeve.
Hailey Caldwell (3)
Sewena?
Serena finally looked up, meeting hailey's innocent eyes. For the briefed movement, something flickered in her cold expression. But it was gone before anyone could see.
Serena Caldwell (15)
Go to bed.
Hailey hesitated, her lip trembling—but then she nodded, hugging her doll tight as she turned and left the room.
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Serena stared at the door for a long time before turning back to their mother, as if nothing had happened at all.
