Nikah
I was sitting on the soft, velvet-draped sofa, surrounded by cushions that felt as plush as clouds. The floral scent of fresh roses filled the room, mingling with the faint aroma of incense. My hands rested on my lap, trembling slightly as I fidgeted with the golden embroidery on my bridal dupatta.
The room was filled with murmurs, yet all I could hear was the steady voice of Maulvi Sahab, reciting the sacred words of Nikah with utmost clarity and calmness. His voice echoed in my ears, pulling me further into the reality of this moment.
Through the thin white veil partitioning us, I could vaguely see the outline of him—Taha Zayan Mirza, the man I was about to marry. The veil, a symbol of modesty, felt like a boundary I couldn’t cross, both physically and emotionally. He seemed calm, composed, unbothered—as though this wasn’t a life-changing moment for him. For me, it felt like the walls were closing in.
“Nikah ke aqd ke mutabiq, Taha Zayan Mirza ki taraf se aapko mehr pesh kiya ja raha hai. Ye mehr hai 10 lakh rupay"
[ According to the agreement of the marriage.Taha Zayan Mirza is offering you the mehr (dowry). This mehr is worth ten Lakh rupees.]
The maulvi saheb's words hung in the air, making me blink in disbelief. A mehr of ten lakh rupees? It was overwhelming, extravagant—a reflection of his wealth. I was truly shocked..did he himself thoughts to give me?? Or .. something
Or was it just another display of his power, his status?
Then came the moment I had been dreading.
The maulvi saheb turned to me, his tone gentle yet firm, reciting the sacred words:
"Ruhani Siddiqui, kya aap Taha Zayan Mirza ke sath nikah qabool karti hain? Aapka mehr 10 Lakh rupay hai."
[ Do you accept Taha Zayan Mirza as your husband in this marriage? Your mehr is 10 Lakh]
The world around me seemed to fade, and all I could hear was the deafening sound of my own heartbeat.
A single word—just three times—was all it took. My whole life rested on this moment. My lips quivered as I opened my mouth, trying to steady my voice, unsure if this decision was truly mine to make.

"Qabool hai," I whispered softly.
[ I accept. ]
The maulvi saheb repeated the question twice more. And twice more, I replied, my voice growing steadier each time

"Qabool hai. Qabool hai."
Through the veil, I saw his faint shadow shift as he responded in turn, his voice deep and unwavering:
"Qabool hai. Qabool hai. Qabool hai."
With each utterance, a knot tightened in my chest. The words had been spoken, the agreement made, and the nikah was complete.
I sat still, my hands clenched together as the reality of the moment settled over me. I was now "Ruhani Taha Mirza", the wife of a man I barely knew
