The rhythmic sound of gloves hitting the heavy bag echoed through the small gym.
Jeon Jeongguk was completely immersed in his training, the thud of his punches a steady, powerful beat that matched the intensity burning in his chest.
His muscles rippled with every hit, sweat dripping down his temples and across his furrowed brow.
His obsidian eyes were sharp and focused, locked onto an invisible opponent, as if winning this imaginary fight could bring him some sort of peace.
Boxing had always been his escape.
When everything in life became too much, when emotions threatened to overwhelm him, he fought.
A world where he could shut everything else out and focus on the next hit, the next move.
But then, his phone rang.
His fist paused mid-swing, and he blinked, breath heavy as he slowly lowered his hands.
He glanced at the phone sitting on the bench, the caller ID flashing “Mom.”
A frown creased his forehead. His mother rarely called him unless it was something important.
Wiping his hands on a towel, he picked up the phone and swiped to answer.
Jeon Jeongguk
Mom? What’s up?
His mother’s words were shaky, broken with sobs, her voice barely recognizable as she struggled to speak through her tears.
Mrs Jeon
(sobbing)Guk... it’s Mingyu and Taeyeon... They’ve been in an accident... It’s bad, Guk... You need to come to the hospital...
Mingyu? His brother? An accident? He couldn’t wrap his mind around it.
His hand tightened around the phone, and he felt his chest constrict, making it hard to breathe.
Jeon Jeongguk
(stunned)What... What do you mean? An accident? How bad is it?
His mother’s sobs were the only response for a moment, and it was enough to make his heart sink.
Whatever it was, it was bad. Really bad.
