The next morning, Mel woke up slowly, feeling the pleasant sensation of warmth next to her body, making her wish she wouldn't wake up if she was dreaming, she liked the cozy feeling she was experiencing. With her eyes still closed, she enjoyed the moment of comfort for a while longer.
Upon opening her eyes, Mel was startled to realize she was hugging Eduardo, lying on his chest, and that the warmth she felt came from his body, who was sleeping peacefully with her wrapped in his arms.
For a few seconds, Mel allowed herself to enjoy the closeness, feeling her heart beat faster and a lightness she hadn't felt in a long time. However, she soon began to think about how Eduardo would react if he woke up at that moment, so she carefully tried to pull away so as not to wake him, moving slowly, trying not to make any noise or sudden movements.
Eduardo, even so, felt Mel stirring and woke up, opening his eyes still drowsy. When he saw her, a gentle smile spread across his lips as he admired Mel's slightly flushed face. He raised his hand, gently touching Mel's face, brushing aside the strand of hair that fell over it to see her clearly.
"Good morning," Eduardo greeted, his voice hoarse with sleep but with a smile on his lips, while Mel expected him to be strange to see her in his arms.
"Good morning," Mel replied, trying to hide the blush that warmed her cheeks. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to... I just... I don't know how I got here..."
"It's okay, Mel," Eduardo interrupted, trying to calm her down. "I owe you an apology. I ended up falling asleep holding your hand and I didn't see the time pass."
Mel smiled shyly, still feeling a little embarrassed. Eduardo loosened his grip on Mel half unwillingly, and sat up, rubbing his eyes.
"Are you feeling better?" Mel asked, changing the subject to avoid embarrassment, sitting down next to him.
"Yes, I am. Thank you for taking care of me last night."
"No need to thank me..." Mel was still nervous, but happy to know that Eduardo was better.
Eduardo looked at her, feeling that the closeness between them was so natural and at the same time unexpected that he couldn't understand.
"Well, I need to go home..."
"At least wait for me to make coffee."
"No, I really need to go." Embarrassed, Mel could only think about leaving.
"Okay, but I'll take you." Eduardo stood up, holding out his hand to help her.

"That was a mistake," Eduardo said, looking away.
"A mistake?" Mel asked, feeling a tightness in her chest, remembering the day she saw Eduardo with Ellen, making her feel bad for having kissed him like that. "I'm sorry, you're in a relationship..."
"In a relationship? Where did you get that idea?"
"That woman who was at the office a few days ago..."
"No, Mel. Ellen is my sister," explained Eduardo.
"Your sister?" Mel repeated, now confused. "But then why did you react like that?"
"We work together... And I can't..." Eduardo sighed, running a hand through his hair, afraid of what he was feeling for Mel, and of suffering another disappointment. "It's best to forget what happened."
Mel felt disappointment grow within her, but she tried to hide her feelings.
"Of course, Mr. Bittencourt, it was a long night," she said, forcing a smile, and Eduardo felt uncomfortable being called that way. "I understand what you mean, this won't happen again." Mel quickly grabbed her purse, ready to leave.
"Thank you for understanding," Eduardo said, trying to stand firm in his decision. "I'll take you home."
"You don't have to, I'll order a car through the app."
"I already told you I'll take you..." Mel didn't want to start an argument with Eduardo.
"Okay."
Eduardo had left his car in the event parking lot the night before, but he had another vehicle in the garage, a vintage model he was restoring in his spare time. He politely opened the door for Mel to get in, and she avoided looking at him. As they drove off, the silence in the car was heavy and uncomfortable. Eduardo focused on the road, while Mel looked out the window, fighting against the disappointment she was feeling.
When they arrived at the address where Mel was staying, she turned to him with a forced smile.
"Thank you for bringing me home," she thanked, opening the car door without waiting for him to be polite.
"You're welcome, Mel." Eduardo couldn't look her in the eye.
"Take care..." Mel got out of the car and walked on without looking at him.
As Eduardo drove away, Mel felt her heart sink. Everything she had felt when she kissed him had turned into a painful memory, and she knew it would be hard to forget what had happened.
"How could I fall in love with him?" she wondered, annoyed. "Of course, a man like him would never look at me..."
Sadness washed over Mel, who felt confused and guilty for letting herself get carried away by her feelings. She knew she needed to be strong, but what had happened still hurt.
