Mel went back to work still worried about Eduardo, who remained seated in the same spot. He felt like his head was heavy, as if it weighed ten times more than usual.
Mel tried to concentrate on her tasks, but her gaze frequently went back to Eduardo, observing him carefully.
At the end of the event, Eduardo still felt the throbbing headache in his head and realized that he wasn't in any condition to drive. He was aware that he had drunk more than legally allowed, and even if he hadn't, the headache wouldn't let him drive. He felt as if the pain was intensifying, and the idea of facing traffic only made the situation worse.
As soon as Mel finished work, she went to the locker room to change. Attentive and worried, she approached Eduardo again to see if he was feeling better.
"Eduardo, you don't look well," Mel said, concerned about Eduardo, who still hadn't recovered from the pain.
"No, I'm not… I just want to go home."
"Do you want me to call someone to pick you up?"
"No..." Mel didn't know what to do and even thought about putting him in a taxi or calling a ride-hailing service, but she was worried, so she decided to accompany him home.
"Alright, I'll help you get home."
Eduardo hesitated for a moment, as he didn't want to trouble Mel, but the pain and fatigue convinced him that he needed help.
"I... I think you're right, Mel. I'm in no condition to go home alone," he admitted, a little dazed.
"It's okay, I'll call a ride, I just need to know your address," said Mel, quickly taking her cell phone to request the ride.
When the car arrived, Mel helped Eduardo get in and settle into the back seat. During the trip, she kept a close eye on him, concerned about his condition.
"Are you alright?" she asked as the car headed for the address provided by Eduardo.
"A little... Thank you for accompanying me, Mel," he replied without opening his eyes, trying to relax.
Arriving at Eduardo's address, Mel helped him out of the car and into the house. The headache still persisted. In the living room, Eduardo sat down on the sofa, letting out a heavy sigh as he removed his tie and jacket.
Mel quickly observed Eduardo's house, which was in a luxurious condominium in the city. The modern architecture, the integrated environments, impeccable organization, and the discreet elegance of the decoration caught her attention. Every detail seemed carefully planned, reflecting Eduardo's personality.
"Is there anyone home to help you?" Mel asked.
"No, I live alone." This information somehow made Mel happy, leading her to conclude that he was probably not married, but she soon reprimanded herself for the thought. After all, she worked for Eduardo and shouldn't have those kinds of thoughts.
"Eduardo, taking a painkiller will do you good," Mel suggested.
"I don't have any medicine at home," Eduardo said, massaging his temples once more, trying to relieve the pain.
Mel remembered that in her purse she would probably find a blister pack of the medicine she used to take for cramps. She went to the kitchen, got a glass of water, and a capsule of the medicine from her purse.
"Here, this will help ease your pain," Mel said with a gentle smile, sitting down next to him.
Eduardo opened his eyes and took the medicine without protest. He left the glass on the coffee table before holding Mel's hand, feeling comforted by her presence.
"Thank you, Mel," Eduardo thanked, looking at Mel, who blushed slightly, feeling her cheeks warm up.
"I just want to help..."
Eduardo continued holding Mel's hand for a few seconds before finally letting go.
"I need to get some sleep."
"Yes, it will do you good, and I'll be on my way so you can rest..."
"How will you get home? It's already dawn."
"I'll call another ride, don't worry."
"No, I can't let you leave like this. I'll get some rest, and as soon as I wake up, I'll take you home." Eduardo held Mel's hand again, preventing her from getting up, closing his eyes again.
"Eduardo… I... I need to go…"
"And I need to get some sleep..." Eduardo said as he quickly fell asleep, holding Mel's hand.
Mel watched Eduardo, seeing the expression of pain on his face soften as he slept. She raised her hand, moved by an impulse, wanting to touch Eduardo's face to comfort him. However, she drew back, knowing that she shouldn't touch him.
"What do I do?" Mel wondered as she remained beside Eduardo. She didn't want to wake him up, imagining how uncomfortable the pain he was feeling must be, and she waited for Eduardo to release her hand so she could leave.
But Mel, tired from the day's double shift, felt sleep slowly take over, and she dozed off, feeling strangely comfortable next to him.
