Episode 6

The next morning, Mel dressed carefully, choosing an outfit that made her feel confident for the interview. She felt a knot in her stomach that prevented her from having breakfast, and she left early because she lived far from the company.

Mel arrived at the company in advance and sat in the reception area, taking deep breaths to control her anxiety. When her name was called, she stood up and followed the receptionist to the interview room.

The interviewer was accompanied by a lady with a welcoming smile, who greeted Mel and invited her to sit down.

"Mel, right?" asked the examiner, looking at her resume. "I see you speak English fluently. Could you tell me a little about your experience and why you want this position?"

Mel smiled, trying to control her nervousness.

"Of course. Although I don't have formal experience as a secretary, I have a lot of experience dealing with the public." Mel talked about her previous experiences and answered questions. "Furthermore, I've studied English for many years and I'm comfortable communicating in another language. I'm looking for a growth opportunity and I believe this position would be perfect for that."

The interviewer seemed impressed with Mel's confidence and determination. He asked a few more questions about her skills and experiences, and Mel answered them all with clarity and enthusiasm. At the end of the interview, he smiled again.

"I really enjoyed talking to you, Mel. We have other interviews scheduled, and we'll be in touch as soon as the selection process is finished."

Mel thanked him and left the company feeling optimistic that she might get the job. She knew she had done her best and that, regardless of the outcome.

Mel walked to the city center to save on bus fare. Feeling hungry, Mel went into a snack bar to have breakfast. As Mel sat down to eat, she saw Alexandre and his mistress walking hand in hand across the street toward a car parked a few meters from the entrance to the snack bar. Mel's mind began to wander to the reasons that led to Alexandre's betrayal.

She clearly remembered the signs her ex-husband had given, those little details that, at the time, she had tried to ignore.

Alexandre started coming home late frequently, always full of excuses that sounded empty. The nights he said he was working late or going out with friends became increasingly common. The strange smell on his clothes, a perfume that wasn't hers, sparked an uneasy feeling in the back of her mind. It was as if he was trying to hide something, and the lack of attention and affection only accentuated the distance between them.

The disinterest he showed, especially in conversations and moments that used to be special, made Mel feel invisible. The laughter and complicity that once existed seemed to have disappeared, replaced by a cold indifference. Now, reflecting on all this, Mel realized that maybe she knew, on some level, what was happening, but she wished to ignore the signs in the hope that everything would go back to the way it was before.

These memories hit her like a blow, but they also motivated her to move on. She was determined not to let the disappointments affect her mood that day.

Days later, Mel was at home, organizing her things, when the phone rang. Seeing the multinational company's number on the screen, her heart began to beat faster in anticipation of good news.

"Hello?" Mel answered, her voice slightly trembling.

"Hello, Mel. This is Mariana, from the human resources department at Sand Imports. How are you?" greeted the warm voice on the other end of the line.

"Hi, Mariana. I'm fine, and you?"

"I'm great, thank you. I'm calling to give you some good news, you've been selected for the secretary position. Congratulations, Mel!"

Mel felt a wave of relief and joy wash over her body. Tears welled up in her eyes as she tried to control her emotion.

"Wow! Thank you. I'm very happy with this opportunity."

"We're also happy to have you on our team. You've shown a lot of competence and willingness to learn. Let's schedule a day for you to come here, deliver copies of your documents, and sign the contract. Your training starts next week. Can you deliver the documents tomorrow morning?"

"Yes, I can. I'll be there tomorrow. Thank you again so much."

"You're welcome, Mel. See you tomorrow. Congratulations again!"

Mel hung up the phone and let out a cry of joy. It was the news she needed, the confirmation that her life was finally starting to improve.

"I need to tell Isa…" Before she could dial her friend's number, the phone started ringing.

"Hello, Isa."

"Hi, Mel! How are you?"

"Isa! I'm fine, and you?"

"I'm fine, I have a lot of news to tell you, but first I need to know how the job interview went," said Isabela excitedly.

"I have good news. I got the job!" Mel replied enthusiastically.

"That's amazing, Mel! Congratulations! And when do you start?"

"I'm starting training next week. I'm so happy!"

"And I'm very happy for you, Mel, and I called you because I want to see you before I go back to Italy. Can we meet?" Isabela suggested to share the news in person.

"Of course! Where and when?" Mel asked, eager to see her friend.

"Can it be now?" Isabela asked.

"Why not?" replied Mel, and they arranged to meet at the same place as the other day.
