The elevator opens. Christian starts walking, and I follow behind him.
"So?" He asks me without looking at me.
"The meeting with Mr. Gomez. It seems he wants to make you a proposal."
"Did he tell you what the proposal is about?"
I shook my head. I held his open agenda in my hands.
"He just said it was important."
We entered the employee area. The clock showed one o'clock, and we were just getting to work. So late?
I saw my colleagues; everyone seemed interested in knowing why we arrived at that hour.
"Okay. I'll go to the meeting with Mr. Gomez."
"I'll let him know you'll go."
"Anything else?"
"Hmm. I don't think so."
"What will you do this afternoon?"
"I'm going home."
"Don't you have plans to go out with anyone?"
We passed my desk. I left my briefcase on my chair and entered Christian's office.
"No."
"Do you plan to rest?"
"No."
"Then what?"
He sat in his chair and opened his laptop.
"I'm going to watch my drama."
"Your drama?"
"I'm watching a series on air called 'Captivating a King.'"
I pondered my words.
"Do you like romance?"
"And the drama too."
He stared at me, and after a few seconds, he focused his attention on the laptop.
"You don't have to accompany me to the meeting with Mr. Gomez. I'll review some proposals, and then I'll leave."
"Okay."
"Enjoy lunchtime."
"Thank you! See you in a bit."
I turned around, intending to leave his office.
"Jule," he pronounced my name.
"Yes?"
He stared at me intensely.
"Nothing. Forget it."
"Okay. See you later."
He nodded. I left his office.
...🍬🍬🍬...
"So?" Jessi asked me.
"So what?"
"Did you arrive at work together? I heard a rumor that you traveled together. Someone saw you getting out of the boss's car."
"They saw me?" I asked, taken aback.
"Of course."
"Well, yes. We came together. Christian went to a meeting this morning and asked me to accompany him," I lied.
It was evident that I wasn't going to tell them the real reason we arrived together was that I slept over at the boss's house.
"I thought something had happened to you. I thought you weren't coming to work today," said Erick.
"Thanks for your concern, everything is fine," I replied.
"Want to go to dinner tonight? It's on me," said Kevin.
"Yes, I'd like that," Jessica was the first to respond.
"Sure, that would be nice," Erick replied.
"I..." my cell phone started vibrating.
Christian was calling me.
"Is it the boss?" Kevin asked.
"Yes. I have to answer. Excuse me."
I walked away from the table and went out into the hallway.
"Hello?" I pronounced.
"Did you finish eating?" He asked.
"Yes."
"Excellent. I need to ask you a favor."
"Sure, how can I help you?"
"I want you to prepare a bouquet for my mother."
"Anything special?"
"She likes daisies."
"Perfect. I'll leave right away."
"Can you let me know when it's ready?"
"Yes."
"I'll pick you up at your friend's store. Does that sound good?"
Raul's shop was far from here. I was thinking of buying the flowers at that flower shop in Las Animas. I'll have to go with Raul!
"Okay. I'll wait for you, then."
I went back to the cafeteria.
"Everything okay?" Erick asked.
"Yes. I have to go."
"And that?"
"I'm going to buy some things that Christian asked me for."
"Will you have dinner with us tonight?" Kevin wanted to confirm.
"Thank you, but I don't think I can."
"Will you work late?" Jessi was curious.
I shook my head.
"No. I, I have other plans."
...🍬🍬🍬...
It's six-thirty in the afternoon, Juliana's bouquet of daisies has been ready since three. And Christian still hasn't come!
"Do you think he'll come for you?" Raul asks me for the third time.
"I already told you he would. Don't you want me here with you?"
"It's no problem; I'm just saying maybe he forgot to pick you up."
I let out a sigh.
"Whatever, at least I was able to watch my chapters while I waited."
"Are you watching that series you told me about?"
"Yes. It's super good. The king just found out she's a woman."
"What? He didn't know she's a woman?"
I shook my head.
"It's just that she disguised herself as a man for a very important reason, and the king has always thought she really is a man."
"And then?"
"In the palace, there's a rumor that the king likes men, and… You should watch it. I'm already excited just telling you about it!"
He didn't seem interested in my suggestion.
"I don't have time to think about watching Korean series."
"How bitter!"
The front door opened. I thought it would be Christian! But no. I was wrong.
"Whatever. I'm going to the bathroom. Can you attend to this customer?"
"Sure."
She was a beautiful woman. She was elegantly dressed and radiated an aura of being a "lady of the hills."
"Welcome! How can I help you?" That's the first thing I say to her.
"I'm looking for flowers for my husband."
"Any flower in particular?"
"Do you have white roses? I don't see them around here."
"Yes. We have white roses."
I directed her to the main counter, and next to the cabinet was the bucket with the white roses.
"They're beautiful! I'll take a dozen."
"Of course. What kind of paper would you like them wrapped in?"
She examined the color samples available.
"I want the metallic blue."
I nodded.
"It'll be ready in a moment."
I took the flowers. I took them to the table and gathered some sprigs of green leaves. I arranged the bouquet. I wrapped it.
"If you'd like to go to the cash register, my colleague will charge you," I suggested to the customer.
She listened to me.
The door opened again, and another customer entered. I tied a blue ribbon as a final touch and finished the bouquet.
"White roses?" His voice made me give him my attention. "I thought you didn't like roses."
"They're not my favorites, but…"
"Christian? What are you doing here?" She asked.
My client's face was etched with surprise, and my boss seemed to have seen a ghost. Why did he seem angry?
"Marisa," he said.
What the hell was going on here? I felt a bit of tension here.
"How have you been? I sent you the invitation to my wedding; I thought…"
"Did you really want me to go?" He interrupted her. "It's no use."
I felt a little uncomfortable with the situation. I wanted to interrupt.
"Excuse the interruption, your bouquet is ready, ma'am," I told her.
She turned her attention to me and took the flowers.
"Thank you very much! It turned out beautiful. I hope my husband likes it!"
"I think he's going to like it," I added.
"I have to go. It was nice seeing you, Christian!" She said goodbye.
He didn't return her greeting. She left.
"I'll bring the bouquet for your mother," I let him know.
Christian seemed to be meditating. He didn't answer me.
"Everything okay? It looked like those two were about to fight," Raul had noticed.
"I don't know what the hell they have between them. But, it's time for me to go. See you later."
"Take care."
"You too."
With the bouquet in my hands, I walked over to Christian. His attention was on the door, and he literally didn't look very well.
"Are you okay?" I wasn't afraid to ask.
"Yes. Well, no."
"Were you…?"
"She was my wife."
"Your wife?"
"Let's get out of here!"
And surprisingly, he took my hand, and we left the store.
