But Kai went in first, covering me, everything was turned upside down, if it was messy before, now it was completely destroyed, including his computers. I saw blood on the floor... I was shocked, and felt guilty that something might have happened because of me. I felt Kai's arms around me.
Kai: We have to leave if he finds us here; it's worse. But this isn't your fault, listen to me. We left the place.
Ali was filled with concern. I got in the car and looked at her.
Kai: I've known Jimmy for a while; he's a slippery guy. Whatever happened, I know he got away, and he will come to find me. Don't worry, Ali.
Ali: I just nodded hopefully, while Kai drove. We stopped at a cafe; I wasn't even hungry, but Kai ordered juice and sat next to me, trying to calm me.
Ali: Do you think that guy Diablo has something to do with the drugs and this?
Kai: I don't think so. This is bigger, and Diablo is just a debt collector as far as I know... Ali. "Gato" is seeking information about the drugs, he says he's on the drug trail. But still nothing.
Ali: I took the juice when my cell phone started ringing; it was a call from Tian. He urgently told me that a patient with an overdose arrived at the hospital. Hearing that, I rose immediately. I told Kai to take me back to my job; fortunately, we weren't far. Arriving there, Kai didn’t want to leave. So, he waited while I put on my lab coat and gloves, I observed Tian stabilizing the girl; I realized it was the girl from the funeral. I began assessing the patient, instructed Tian to intubate; I cleared her airways, connected her to a ventilator, and managed to stabilize her. I ordered chest x-rays, an electrocardiogram, and blood and urine tests. We moved her to the ICU, where I examined her carefully; I saw needle marks on her arms, pale, dry skin, recent bite marks—I decided to take a cast of those, and scratches on her arms. I couldn't perform a rape examination because she was a minor; I needed her parents' consent.
I just stared, "Who did this to you?"
Her father arrived, full of worry about his daughter’s condition; I explained everything we did to stabilize her. We just had to wait for the drugs to leave her system. After talking to him, he agreed to a rape test, which I administered and took tissue samples. I spotted an old tearing wound, very hurt in her zone, and sent it to the lab. I was so tired that Tian took over for me. So, I accepted and when I left work, it was around eight at night, dark already, but Kai was still there waiting for me with some desserts. Seeing him comforted me; I was so tired of it all.
Ali: Did you hear from Jimmy? (I see Kai shaking his head no).
(I sigh) Didn't you have to go to the club?
Kai: Yes, but "Gato" can handle it. I couldn't leave you alone.
Ali: I’m sorry.
Kai: Why?
Ali: For keeping you from working.
Kai: You don’t have to, besides, I’m doing this because I want to, Ali (while driving).
Ali: Today, I had a patient with a methamphetamine overdose, but this girl is a victim. She had all the evidence to fit the profile.
We arrived at Kai's house, took out the groceries he had bought at noon, but the door was ajar; Kai gestured to me while pulling out his gun. But I just saw blood droplets at the entrance; cautiously Kai opened the door and followed the blood trail until we found Jimmy on the floor, beaten and unconscious. Kai pointed the gun but lowered it; I saw him and began attending to him. Kai brought me a first-aid kit, and we took him to my room, treated his wounds, gave him painkillers. Thankfully, he had no broken bones, just bruises. We let him rest, waiting for him to wake up to tell us what happened.
Kai told me to grab my things and bring them to his room. He helped me without making noise because of Jimmy. Kai went downstairs to clean the blood while I cooked something simple. We ate, but I sat on the couch mentally exhausted, with many questions and few answers. We could only wait, while Kai brought some beers and handed me one. Drinking, I felt this town would consume me.
Kai: How are you?
Ali: Mentally tired. Can we talk about something else? I just want to rest from all this for a while, from what's happening.
We drank several beers while talking about trivial things.
Ali: How is a guy like you single? I sipped my beer, barefoot, my hair more disheveled than ever.
Kai: Because I hadn't found the one I was looking for, but now I have (staring intently).
But she was staring back at me too.
"Don’t look at me like that."
Ali: How? I chugged the beer in one gulp.
Kai: Like you did that day you approached me in the club, very seductive, which makes me want to steal your lips and devour them.
Ali: (I smiled) Me, seducing you? I raised an eyebrow; if I really did, I'd drive you wild. I moved closer, arching onto him, stole his lips in a beer-flavored kiss, but my heart raced fast. Our tongues danced as if they were in sync, our lips moved as if wanting to devour each other. His hands tangled in my hair as our lips fought for dominance, and I was lost in his kiss. Until a noise startled us, pulling us from our bubble...
