Episode 9

After the removal of the body, it was taken to the hospital morgue where the autopsy was to be conducted. I began by inspecting her clothes, the same turquoise dress she wore to the club. Starting the body examination, I searched for needle marks but paused upon discovering healed bite marks on her flesh, and a bruise on her arm. I conducted drug tests and examined her hair, taking samples from beneath her nails to determine if there were traces of her attacker.

There were numerous similarities to my sister's case—no doubt the killer attempted to replicate her supposed suicide. I surmised there would be Diazepam present in her system, just as with my sister. Reviewing Jennie's medical records, it was noted she suffered from depression and was on medication, Diazepam being one.

I was about to speak with Jennie's psychologist when Tian informed me that Detective Dylan was looking for me.

I ushered him into my office.

Watching him enter.

Dylan: How are you, doctor?

Ali: Good, please have a seat. If this is about the report, I'm nearly finished, save for the test results from the samples sent to the lab, including the rope fibers.

Dylan: Indeed, that's partly why I'm here. Can you tell if it was suicide?

Ali: A few more analyses are needed, but it doesn’t seem so to me. I’m awaiting the toxicology results and will then provide you with a detailed report.

Dylan: Another matter, we checked her call log and you were the last person she spoke to before her death. What was your conversation about? He asked, pulling out a notebook.

Ali: (Sighing) She was a friend of my sister Alana. We went out yesterday to reminisce with a few of my sister's friends. I called her hours ago out of concern, to ensure everything was alright and to let her know she could talk to me whenever she wished.

Dylan: Why were you concerned about her?

Ali: She vanished suddenly while we were drinking last night. Then I saw her harshly grabbed by the arm by a man. Later, she was found by the same man who discovered her this morning, I believe his name is Kai, and from what I gathered, the other man is the mayor’s son.

Dylan: Thank you for your time, he said with a smile.

Watching him leave, I gathered my things, but on my way out, I encountered Jennie's mother weeping. Upon seeing me, she approached.

Clara: My daughter, Ali, she didn’t do it.

Ali: (Sighing, I understand her pain all too well for I've experienced it). So I hugged her—I'll do whatever I can to ensure that if someone did this to your daughter, they'll pay.

I stayed with her for a while, assisting in the paperwork for the release of her body since the funeral was the following day.

Then I set out to meet Jennie's psychologist. After she answered all my questions, she couldn’t disclose details of their sessions. She left due to a patient emergency, giving me the chance to search for Jennie’s file. I didn’t have time to read, so I took photos of what I could before the psychologist returned. Thankfully, she found me sitting just where she left me. After a few more questions about the medication, I departed. As I passed by the Black Angel club, I saw Kai entering and paused to stop my car and get out; seeing me, he halted and crossed his arms at the entrance.

Ali: May I talk to you? I asked, serious.

Kai: Hello, Alicia, how are you? Come in.

Ali: I entered the dim, quiet place, so different from last night. I observed him, noticed his striking green eyes, rosy lips, a beard that lent him maturity, light brown hair, his muscular build, and he was much taller than me. He dressed simply in black trousers and an open shirt with rolled sleeves and a grey sweater beneath. He was similarly appraising me.

Kai: I assume you're here to inquire about your sister Alana and my connection to Jennie.

Ali: Yes, you’re the most suspicious; you had a link to both victims.

Kai: (Moving closer to gaze into her green eyes and sweet lips) So, I'm your suspect? He said with a sly smile.

Ali: The partner of the victim is always suspect, and some psychopaths return to the crime scene pretending to have discovered the body.

Kai: You have quite the imagination, Ali. But I had nothing to do with it. I told Detective Dylan, I returned because I knew something was wrong, I know where she keeps a spare key, so I used it and found her. I tried to lower her, but it was too late.

Ali: You remain a suspect to me, and I will uncover the truth about my sister and Jennie. My determination was clear as we stood so close I could feel his warm breath.

Kai: They were my friends, and I, more than anyone, want to find out what happened. But remember this, Ali. You may have been born here in Denver, but you don’t belong to this place, and you don’t understand how things work here. Keep playing this game, and you might not like the ending.

Ali: (Staring him down fearlessly) —Are you threatening me?—

Kai: No, Ali, just a reminder of where you are. You're brave to come to this den of vipers, or perhaps foolish.

Ali: I came to unveil the truth, and I won't leave until I do.

Kai: Watching her leave, I've never met anyone so stubborn. I took out my phone.

Kai: 📱 "Gato," I need you to stop what you're doing and keep an eye on forensic pathologist Alicia Morgan.
