Episode 8

Day after frustrating day, my job search yields the same result.

As dusk falls, I return home, my spirits even lower than before.

I shower, get dressed, pull my hair into a loose bun, and start dinner.

Natalia comes in beaming, readying herself for dinner as I answer the doorbell—it's Diego, arms laden with beautiful roses.

Maisa: Diego, they're stunning!

I press a kiss to his lips.

Diego: It's an apology. Do you forgive me?

Maisa: Yes, come in!

He takes a seat at the counter as I place the roses in a vase and finish preparing dinner.

Diego: Did you find a job?

Maisa: Nothing yet.

Diego: Darling, let's get married already! You and your sister can move in with me – no rent to worry about, and no rush to find a job. I'll support you until something comes along.

Maisa: Are you serious, Diego? - I ask, taken aback.

This is new. Diego has always resisted the idea of me working outside; he insists on marriage but doesn't accept my dreams. This is the first time he's suggested something like this without us fighting.

Diego: I mean it. I may not agree, but I love you too much to argue. Whatever you decide is fine by me, as long as you're my wife.

This shift in him makes me hopeful; perhaps he's beginning to see that things don't always go his way.

Luna: Good evening! - she chirps as she enters.

Maisa: What's got you so happy?

Luna: Great news!

Maisa: What is it?

Luna: Remember that co-worker at the hospital who helped me out? - she asks and I nod. - Well, they need a nanny, and I recommended you! They want to meet you tomorrow!

Maisa: Really? This is amazing! - I respond, elated.

We hug, thrilled.

Natalia: What's all this joy about?

Maisa: I have a job interview tomorrow!

Natalia: I don't want to be a downer, but let's be realistic, Maisa. Who would hire you after what happened at the cafe? - she says, joining Diego.

Although I hope for the best, Natalia’s words are a wake-up call; my former boss's account could ruin it.

Luna: That's where you're wrong, dear sister! I told them everything about Maisa's situation, and they're giving her a chance!

Maisa: Did you really tell them?

Luna: Of course, Maisa! I was as honest with them as you've taught me to be!

Maisa: Thank you, sis. I love you!

Luna: Anything for you, big sis! Love you too!

Diego: I can't believe you're considering taking a job cleaning up after kids. That's demeaning!

Maisa: There's no shame in honest work. I thought you'd changed your mind, but it seems you were just pretending, to get me to marry you.

Diego: You're stubborn. I can give you everything... the world, but you're too proud.

Our argument escalates and he leaves in a huff.

I'm losing patience with Diego; his chauvinistic outbursts are the last thing I need.

After Luna showers, the three of us eat in silence. Natalia gets a message and leaves to join her reconciled boyfriend. Luna and I watch some TV before bed.

Morning arrives, and I rise early.

After personal hygiene and dressing, I prepare breakfast.

Natalia is her typical cheerful self as she goes to get ready.

After setting up breakfast, I head out, walking to conserve cash.

Arriving at the address, I clear security and enter an opulent mansion.

The housekeeper greets me and asks me to wait in the living room. I stand until two elegant women approach me with familiar ease.

Ava: It's a pleasure to meet you, Maisa!

Maisa: Likewise, the pleasure is mine!

Camila: Please, take a seat.

They start the interview with a litany of questions, never broaching the cafe incident. Wanting to be upfront, I bring it up, but they stop me.

Camila: Don't worry about that. We trust your sister's word and trust you as well.

Ava: Victoria is sweet and playful. The cook will handle her diet; just keep to the schedule, and ensure she sleeps on time. Your hours are seven to six, but we'll pay overtime if an overnight stay is needed.

We discuss salary and benefits—a vast improvement on the cafe, complete with meal vouchers and a driver for Victoria's outings.

Maisa: I'm deeply grateful for this chance, and your trust. I won't let you down!

As we finalize details, Ava introduces me to a man carrying little Victoria in his arms. I barely look at him, Luna warned me about Ava's jealousy.

Victoria charms me instantly. The connection is instant, so I start the job then and there.

I can't deny the house is filled with attractive men, from eldest to youngest, all humble and welcoming.

Miguel is especially handsome; Luna would be smitten.
