Episode 10

Ava

I was very fond of Maisa; she is an incredibly beautiful and friendly woman, and there's a certain sadness in her eyes.

My mother and I, we have decided to pay her a bit more than we did previous caregivers, as we want to encourage her to pursue her dream of attending college.

I couldn't understand why, and it might sound odd, but I never felt jealous of her with my husband. She is very discreet and has never looked at him differently, with any malice. This was another point in her favor, and my little princess loved her instantly.

I wake up, perform my morning routine, get ready, and Ricardo is still asleep.

I go to my daughter's room, and she's already awake.

Ava: Good morning, my princess! - I say, picking her up.

Vic: Mom...

Ava: Yes, mommy, my love! It's mommy! Shall we have a nice bath? So you'll be all fresh when your nanny arrives.

Even though she has a nanny, I like to have my moments with my daughter, so I bathe her, feed her breakfast, give her the bottle, and play with her when I can. Time is short, however, as I still have to study and work. Fortunately, my internship is from 12:30 to 6:00, and my mother arranged her schedule to help me.

I bathe my little one, change her, and as I am combing her hair, Maisa enters the room.

Maisa: Good morning, ma'am!

Ava: Please, call me Ava! You make me feel old!

Maisa: Sorry, Ava! - she smiles.

Victoria beckons her with a little hand wave.

Maisa: Hello, little princess! - she moves closer.

Ava: She really took to you!

Maisa: I've also fallen for this beautiful little princess!

We chat, and then we head down for breakfast. I urge Maisa to join us at the table. She seems uncomfortable, and I notice Ricardo is a bit off. Soon Miguel joins us.

Miguel: Good morning! Good morning, uncle's little princess! - he kisses Victoria's cheek as she sits in my lap.

Nicholas: Stayed out again last night, son?

Miguel: Yeah, at a friend's place!

Ava: Are your 'friends' called that now? - I ask playfully.

Miguel: You know I don't have flings! I'm a serious man! - he says jokingly.

Ricardo: Very serious! - he adds, laughing.

After Victoria finishes her meal, she goes into Maisa's arms, and the two head to the playroom.

Miguel: Wow, that Maisa is stunning! - he comments once we leave the dining room.

Camila: Don't even think about it, Miguel! Good nannies are hard to find these days, so steer clear!

Miguel: I'm not the reason nannies get fired! Aren't you jealous of Maisa, sis?! She's even more beautiful than all the others we've had here!

Ava: No! I feel Maisa is different!

Nicholas: I agree with Ava! She barely touched her coffee, feeling out of place... whereas the others seemed to make themselves right at home!

Ava: See, even dad noticed!

Camila: Don't encourage your daughter, dear!

My father shrugs it off, and Miguel chuckles.

Ricardo: Excuse me, I need to head to the company!

Ava: I'll walk you out, love!

We walk in silence to his car.

Ava: Is something bothering you, Ricardo? You seem off!

Ricardo: You know I hate waking up and not seeing you next to me! It feels like I'm always the second choice!

Ava: I was taking care of our daughter!

Ricardo: Then why hire a nanny?!

Ava: You know I always make time for our daughter! She needs our attention and love, and if I don't spend more time with her, it's because of college, the hospital, and...

Ricardo: And what about me?! Where do I fit into all of this?!

Ava: I always make time for us, too! I just don't understand why you can't be a part of the moments I spend with our daughter. Sometimes it seems like you’re jealous of our own child!

Ricardo: I'm not jealous! I just think you don't prioritize our marriage as much as before!

Ava: What do you want me to do? I try my best, but there's so much... You could take a day off when I'm home, and we could spend it together, just the three of us!

Ricardo: It's better I head to work now. – ignoring what I had said.

Ava: Let's talk... How about dinner tonight?

Ricardo: Fine! See you later!

I must admit, trying to be a good mother, daughter, and wife is challenging, especially when Ricardo doesn't make it easy. Sometimes, it feels like he doesn't care for our daughter and wants all the attention for himself. And yet, he falls short in so many ways. It's always me seeking reconciliation after our arguments, even when he's the one at fault, and his roughness seems unending.

Returning inside, I head up to my room and finish getting ready.

Camila: Are you ready to go, dear?

Ava: Yes! - I reply, somewhat disheartened.

Camila: Is everything all right... between you and your husband?

We leave the room talking, and as we pass through the living room, I kiss my daughter goodbye and proceed to the car. On the way, I tell her about what's been going on.

Camila: Why not surprise him? A night for just the two of you in a quiet place? I'll stay with Victoria; you know how much your father and I love this little girl!

Ava: I'll do just that, Mom! Thank you!

The day at the hospital goes by quickly.

I call Ricardo to invite him to a night that's just ours, but he says he’ll be working late and doesn't know when he'll be home. Then he claims that it's me who doesn't make time for him, for our marriage.
