Jaehan carefully moved his neck, wincing from the soreness. It was the first time he'd ever slept so uncomfortably, especially on a couch. His entire body ached, in fact.
He slowly opened his eyes and let out a sigh. He blinked a couple of times until his gaze settled on Saije. Seeing him still asleep, he stood up to stretch a little. He didn't have his phone with him since he'd left it in the car, but guessed it was probably no later than ten o'clock in the morning. When he returned, he saw the Omega awake, trying to sit up in bed. His arm was painful where the needle had been, so he tried to move it as little as possible.
"Hey," he said, and Saije looked up to see him standing there, "you feeling any better?"
Saije averted his eyes, unsure what to say. He noticed a small bloodstain on the bandage on his arm.
"Yes," he whispered, fidgeting with his hands.
"That's good, glad to hear it."
"What happened to your arm?"
Jaehan glanced at his arm and saw a bit of blood.
"Listen, do you know what just happened? Do you remember anything?"
"I… not much, really."
"Saije, listen," the Alpha said, sitting down next to him, "when I tell you that you can't go out on your own, it's for a reason, not just a whim of mine. If I tell you not to go somewhere, it's because I know the area well and the risks that exist there. That's why I prefer a thousand times that you stay inside the house."
Saije remained silent, just looking at his hands. He tried to remember, but there was a blank in his memory. The last clear thing he remembered was running into some men.
"The last thing I recall is walking down an alley when some men appeared in front of me. I tried to escape, but one of them grabbed me and put a cloth over my mouth and nose."
The Alpha swallowed hard and looked down for a few seconds.
"Things aren't that simple. It doesn't all end because a man grabbed you, and that's it. That town you went into is small and only known for Omega disappearances, and you walked right into the lion's den trying to get away. If I said something when I was drinking, I'm really sorry; I didn't want to scare you or anything like that, and..."
"I'm sorry too," the Omega murmured, giving him a brief look. "You got that wound because of me, didn't you?"
"Omegas are often taken to places where they're drugged, and getting them out is almost impossible. I guess not all Omegas are as lucky as you because I found you in time before they sent you to another place you'd never be able to escape from. Beautiful Omegas like you are always worth a fortune."
Saije was aware of that. Everyone knew about the trafficking of Omegas and what happened to them, but he never thought he would experience something like that. Although he didn't remember what had happened, he realized the extent his whims and bad attitude could take him to, at times.
He didn't know how Jaehan had gotten him out, but knowing that he had been hurt because of him, he felt guilty and concerned about what he must have gone through.
They sat in silence until Jaehan went to speak with the doctor to see if it was okay to go home. Knowing that Saije wasn't seriously hurt provided him with some relief. There had been no abuse; it was just the intensity of the drugs.
"Come on, we can go home now," he announced when he reentered the room. "Everything's fine, and there are no issues."
He carefully moved, feeling a slight pain in his arm.
"What about my clothes?" Saije asked, noticing only his pants were there.
"Well, your shirt and coat were a bit dirty... with blood, so I threw them out. But you can wear my jacket."
He handed the jacket over, and Saije looked at it. It was too big and loose, obviously going to be too long on him. He hesitated for a moment before accepting it. Jaehan just went outside and got dressed. Saije watched the garment for a moment before putting it on and noticing it almost reached his knees.
Outside, he looked both ways until he saw Jaehan.
He just gestured for them to leave, and they got home peacefully until he noticed his parents waiting.
"Damn," he muttered under his breath.
Saije gave the tall woman and the shorter man a brief glance. It wasn't hard to tell who was who.
"Don't say anything, we'll get out and you go inside," Jaehan instructed.
They got out, and the woman was first to approach. Saije found her imposingly tall, much like Jaehan. He didn't quite know where to look when her gaze was so intimidating.
"Where have you been, Jaehan?" she asked loudly. "Since when do you leave your house without any of your men? And..."
Her voice fell silent when she noticed his bandaged arm, her face clouded with anger.
"Mother..."
Saije just wanted to leave, but she grabbed his arm tightly to stop him, saying:
"You're not going anywhere, Omega."
Jaehan moved to free him, knowing what it could provoke. He knew his mother well and the consequences that challenging her in front of someone could have. They stared at each other for a moment. The same height, everyone could see that Jaehan could be strong, but she was a million times worse. The men simply left, knowing they should not hear what was none of their business.
Feeling small between them, Saije noticed that Jaehan's hand took his gently, unlike his mother's grip. He positioned him almost behind him and thought carefully about what he would say next, though he was well aware that there weren't many options to escape unscathed.
His father approached, taking her arm to pull her back a bit. He was a little taller than Saije and more than used to being between them because they often argued.
"Marriott, please, you said you wouldn't argue with him," he reminded her in a gentle whisper.
What she wanted most was to argue with him after realizing the chaos he had caused over someone with whom he had no obligation.
She stepped back, obeying the Omega, but couldn't help giving Saije, nearly hidden behind her son, a long look. Her gaze was intense; it was clear that something had happened to him.
"Let's go inside, son, and we'll talk more calmly," the Omega suggested.
Everyone went inside, and Saije tried to be inconspicuous, but it was impossible.
"Are you out of your mind?" the woman asked, arms crossed, wearing a body-hugging dress and high stiletto heels.
"How dare you get into that damn place? Do you realize what could've happened? You were shot, Jaehan! You can't go into places like that where the bullets aren't plastic!"
"Darling, don't shout, you know you shouldn't get worked up."
Upon hearing that, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a few seconds.
"Next time..."
"Don't worry, there won't be a next time," Saije spoke up, giving her a brief glance. "It was my fault for trying to escape from here, but now it's clear that danger lies outside and not in here. So you don't need to worry about anything else, excuse me, ma'am."
No one said anything as Saije walked past as if nothing had happened. She watched him pass and was speechless because no one had ever spoken to her like that. The father and Jaehan exchanged glances because no one was able to silence her the first time, but the Omega had, effortlessly.
"Okay," she said, not quite confident. "Since that's clear, let's go, my love."
She extended her hand toward the Omega.
Jaehan watched them leave, hand in hand as always. Much had happened, but they had each other whenever they felt they couldn't go on. Then he watched as the car disappeared and released a sigh, having feared it would all end badly but instead discovered that the Omega, in addition to being capricious and vain, was also brave for speaking to his mother that way.
Saije was staring out the window, letting out a sigh. He'd been scared but had masked it well. He had just focused on making a dignified exit, nothing more.
Realizing he was still wearing the Alpha's jacket, he took it off thinking of putting on different clothes. He couldn't resist smelling it. Eyes closed, he savored the intense scent, and the knowledge that Jaehan had gone to such a place just for him made his heart skip a few beats uncontrollably.
He wasn't quite sure how to feel. It was challenging to find a specific sensation for something he couldn't remember. He couldn't force himself to feel or fabricate any emotion. However, he categorized the immense fear he'd felt when that man had grabbed him as colossal. Lying on the bed, he gazed at the flowers still in the vase and wondered:
"If I had left, where else could I see such beautiful flowers?"
Waking up, he heard no noise. Assuming Jaehan had gone to work, he wasn't mistaken; however, venturing downstairs, he saw a woman cleaning and the house filled with a sweet, delicious aroma.
"Oh, hello, young Saije. Many of us have returned from our holidays," the woman announced with a smile as she cooked something.
"Great," he whispered, moving closer to see what she was making.
"Would you like anything special to eat? Young Jaehan likes meat a lot, so that's something he eats almost daily, but I don't mind cooking you something different if you'd like."
He shook his head.
"I'm fine with that, I'll eat meat too. Have you seen the men around the house?"
"Eh, yes, I saw them a few minutes ago when I went out. Michael is nearby waiting for you."
Hearing that made him smile broader. Having him close by made him feel a bit more peaceful, and hearing someone else's voice in the house gave him tranquility after so much quiet.
"I'm going out for a second."
The woman simply nodded.
Opening the door, he saw a somewhat cloudy day. The sunny days were leaving, and the cold was starting to be more noticeable, especially inside the house. He looked around until he saw Michael a few meters away, checking his phone.
"Michael!"
Hearing his name, Michael looked up and walked over to Saije.
"Good afternoon, do you need anything?"
"No, I just wanted to ask you something."
"Of course, go ahead."
"Do you know where Jaehan went to find me?"
He knew he shouldn't discuss such matters, but found it hard to hold his tongue, and before he knew it, he began to explain:
"Yes, we all had to accompany him there. It was like an action movie. He was very worried and hadn't faced anyone with guns in a long time, but he's still as good a shot as ever. The boss has a knack for firearms. His bullets hit everyone. He killed many just to find you; you'll realize you've got a very good husband."
"He can shoot?"
"Yes, and he's very good. It took effort, but he didn't rest until he found you, or he would've turned crazy and burned everything down. You can imagine what those places are like. They're dangerous mafias dedicated only to the trafficking of Omegas like you."
"I see. So that's why he was wounded. I never thought he'd do something like that without reason."
The Beta wasn't sure what he meant by that. From his perspective, it was what a husband should do to save the one he loved.
"Now I want to ask you something."
"Sure, tell me."
"Could you buy me a phone? He said he reloaded the card."
Michael simply nodded. Saije watched from the doorway as the blonde drove away, then went back inside.
