"The checks were signed yesterday," Jaehan explained while he was on the phone. "Sure, everything was stipulated that way, and amendments were promptly made. I agree, it was a minor mistake that slowed everything else down, but it's not going to happen again. The girl we have here is new so that's what caused it."
Magdalena entered, and seeing him on the phone, silently went about her tasks. She left some papers for him and organized a folder.
She noticed he was wearing a black suit with the exception of a pink tie. His choice seemed odd to her because he typically wore gray, blue, or black ties.
"Of course, my mother's trip was extended a bit, but she arrives tomorrow evening. If you reach out to her, she'll be delighted to discuss the upcoming events to support children's homes with you."
She picked up a few last things and carefully left, gently closing the door behind her.
"We've always been present at those events, and we will continue to be so. For my mother, it's vitally important and something that should never be overlooked, especially now when times are getting tougher."
He stood for a few seconds, looking out at the city from his window pane, listening attentively to what the man on the other line was saying.
"Yes, those were hard times for everyone, but we've been overcoming them. Mourning always takes time to get through, but as a family, we're getting back on our feet. Thanks anyway for your support."
He nodded a couple of times, hoping the man would change the subject because it was something he didn't like to dwell on due to the bad taste it left. He fell silent, just listening, and seized the first opportunity to change the subject, and the call ended.
He went back to sit in his chair to review some pending papers and scratched his neck, pensive for a few seconds. He rested his chin in the palm of his hand and sighed, thinking about things. He had told Saije they were going to have lunch today, but he almost had to beg on his knees for Saije to behave. The Omega assured him that he would be a good kid because he'd gotten everything he wanted and that there wouldn't be the slightest tantrum.
He was well aware that he was in the wolf's mouth. He watched as his phone lit up with a new call from his mother.
"Good afternoon, mother."
"Hello, dear, how are you? How are you managing everything?"
He sighed, feeling like he wasn't managing at all, but rather being dragged along to a destination he wasn't sure of.
"As well as I can."
"Jaehan, remember you don't have to do things you don't want to. We are only doing this because their parents were good friends with your father and me, but don't overexert yourself. The contract only lasts a few months while they try to get back on their feet with the money. I've been talking to them, and they say they've been able to solve a lot due to our help."
"Yes, I know, mother."
"What happened yesterday was too much, you shouldn't have allowed him to do that. We all know what he can be like; don't let him manipulate you or anything," his mother spoke in a clear voice, obviously unhappy about what had happened.
"I'm just trying to calm the media, once they settle down, I won't do anything more."
"I told you I could handle things. You should have accepted my help, but your pride was bigger."
He pondered for a moment, realizing that maybe he was just as proud as Saije on a daily basis.
"Don't worry, mom, everything's fine for now. If I need your help, I'll let you know."
"Ok, see you soon, and I will come to your house."
"As you wish," he whispered, knowing he couldn't make up another excuse.
When the day ended, he left his office walking slowly.
"Are you heading home, boss?" Magdalena asked as she walked beside him.
Her heels clicked on the ground, and she looked up at him, taller and as commanding as ever, and wondered if she would ever have him all to herself.
"No, I'm heading to a place on the west side."
"Oh, those areas are very expensive. Unfortunately, I live there. My rent costs an arm and a leg."
"I'm very sorry," he replied, not quite sure what she had said since he was reading a message from Saije telling him to arrive in five minutes or he would get mad.
"Yes, but at least I have a job and a good boss like you."
Jaehan didn't hear anything because he was on edge. All he could think about was Saije and what he might do in the restaurant.
"I hope you have a good time," she said goodbye.
"Magdalena."
"Yes?" she replied with a smile.
"I'll drive you."
"Thank you very much!"
The ride was silent until they arrived at the place where Jaehan got out, and Magdalena did too because she lived just around the corner. They chatted for a moment and she made an effort to always smile, trying to look pretty.
But her smile faded when she saw someone approaching. Someone with completely pink hair because he had been to the hairdresser the day before. Jaehan hadn't had much time for that, so he still had some blue color in his hair. When washing it, he did it thoroughly because the dye wasn't very durable and washed out quickly.
"You're taking too long," Saije murmured with a smile.
Then he looked at where she was standing. Unable to help it, both Omegas examined each other from head to toe with a readily apparent dislike. They had little to be envious of because they were both equally beautiful.
"Magdalena, this is..."
"Your cute and sweet husband," interrupted Saije with a smile.
Jaehan wanted to tell him not to exaggerate, but couldn't.
"And you are?" he asked, looking her over.
"His secretary," she replied, extending her hand.
Saije stared at her hand for a few seconds, gave it a light squeeze, and then, without any pretense, wiped his hand as if he had touched something filthy. She saw that gesture, which only angered her.
"Let's go inside because I'm hungry, or your leeway is over," Saije reminded him.
Magdalena didn't understand what leeway they were discussing, but Jaehan knew perfectly well it was about continuing to be a good kid. He bid Magdalena a polite farewell and went inside. The Alpha had made all arrangements, and the table was reserved, so they went straight to their table where a waiter offered menus immediately.
As expected, Saije ordered everything he saw, even though he wouldn't eat a third of it. People were talking incessantly around them about the current events, and it was obvious that the next day their story would be in many magazines and newspapers. Jaehan assumed that was enough for them to be seen, to have something to talk about, and to leave them alone.
"Are you sleeping with your secretary?" Saije asked bluntly, causing Jaehan to choke on the wine he was sipping.
"Where did you get that from?" he inquired.
"Well, the way she looks at you, it's obvious she likes you," Saije remarked while he ate something.
Jaehan was doubtful for a moment because he had never considered such a thing. He was too busy with the company and family concerns to even think of an affair with his secretary.
"No."
"No, what?" Saije pressed.
"I don't like her."
"I had assumed you did; you have such poor tastes in clothes I figured your choice in partners was the same."
The Alpha heaved a sigh because there was no point. Saije wouldn't change for the world.
They continued to eat, and Jaehan had no choice but to listen as the Omega complained non-stop about the food being cold, lacking salt, poorly cooked, while everything was perfect for Jaehan and he just focused on eating.
His stomach rumbled from a long day; he was starving.
"Hey, aren't you supposed to make a good impression?" Saije pointed out.
"What are you on about now?"
"That it looks like I'm the only one making an effort."
"That's because you're the only spoiled one."
"I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about the fact that you want me to seem like a good husband so as not to tarnish your respectable image, but you're not even wearing the ring."
Jaehan looked at his ring finger and saw it was empty.
"I saw some people taking pictures, surely they saw you're not wearing it. I can already see the headlines tomorrow: 'Alpha Unhappy, Omega Blindly in Love,'" he teased.
Quickly, he started rummaging through his pockets because he always left it in one of them. He wasn't used to wearing it, so it caused him to itch a little.
"See? It doesn't look that bad on you, don't take it off again. If your drooling secretary sees you without it, she'll want to get closer to you even more, and that would create another magazine headline: 'CEO Jaehan Brennan cheats on his husband with his secretary.'"
"Alright, enough with the secretary talk, people can hear you," he warned, looking around.
Saije chuckled for a few moments while jabbing a piece of carrot on his plate. He brought it to his mouth, chewing carefully and ran his tongue over his lips, which distracted Jaehan for just a second.
"I'm going to the restroom," announced the Omega as he stood up.
Jaehan remained seated, assuming that Saije couldn't possibly get into trouble just for going to the restroom, so he stayed calm. He had heard Saije say so many things that the slightest rise in volume from anyone made him think the worst, and he watched Saije, but he was walking back calmly. He watched him sit down and let out a sigh. Realizing that he had been staring too much, Saije gave him a fleeting glance and quipped:
"What are you looking at, blockhead?"
"Nothing, I forgot that if someone gazes at you for too long, you wear out."
"Of course," Saije played along. "If you want to look at me for more than a minute, you'll have to pay me. I'm too cute and sweet for just anyone to do so."
