Radit's body plummeted to the floor, his knees colliding with a sharp thud that echoed clearly in Bulan's ears.
Radit knelt just behind Bulan, who stood with her back to him, her reluctance to turn and face Radit stemming from her deep unwillingness.
A mix of fear and disappointment toward Radit made Bulan averse to even glance at the man who now wept bitterly behind her.
"I'm...I'm sorry, Big Sister Bulan, I truly didn't mean for that to happen," Radit uttered again between his sobs.
But Bulan remained unmoved, her tongue seemingly tied, unable to articulate her anger and disappointment, let alone voice it.
Eventually, Bulan slowly turned around to face Radit, no longer fleeing for the more she ran, the tighter the pain and suffocation gripped her.
Bulan resolved to discuss everything with Radit, aware that he had been oblivious to the identity of the one he had been with that night.
"Ge...Get up, Brother, don't be like this," Bulan finally broke the silence after a moment.
"No, Lan, I won't get up if you keep avoiding me. I'll stay right here until you're willing to talk," Radit replied, his commitment reflected in his continued kneeling with a bowed head.
"Alright, Bulan will talk, but please, Brother, stand up, don't stay like this," Bulan spoke again, the current scenario unsettling for her.
Radit remained kneeling before her, ignoring the pain in his knees from the earlier impact.
Radit then began to rise and took a seat on the sofa in front of them, followed by Bulan who settled onto a single-seater across from him, separated by a table.
"Alright, what is it that you want to discuss?" Bulan asked, attempting to engage Radit in a heartfelt conversation.
She knew very well that the man sitting before her was good-natured and responsible, yet she couldn't fathom what had transpired that night to cause such rage and disappointment, culminating in an incident that cost her brother-in-law something precious.
"Bulan, I know what I did cannot be forgiven, but believe me when I say I never intended to ruin your life because I've come to care for you as my own sister. Rest assured, I will take responsibility for whatever has happened between us," Radit explained, his hands clasped tightly together.
Thump...
Bulan's heart seemed to halt when Radit expressed his intention to take responsibility for what he had done.
"What do you mean?"
"I'll speak with Tari and our entire family. I'll marry you, Lan."
Thump...
Once again, Bulan's heart stopped at Radit's declaration of marriage.
"No, Brother, please don't do this. Tari will be hurt and devastated if you leave her, no, Brother, I can't, I don't want to see Tari and everyone else suffer because of this incident," Bulan replied, consistently shaking her head.
She couldn't bear the thought of witnessing her sister, once more, overwhelmed with sadness and disappointment upon discovering the truth, just as it happened three years ago when Tari attempted to take her own life after Radit broke up with her.
Tari, indeed, was a woman deeply in love with Radit, but she changed after becoming a successful cosmetic doctor and a socialite of the upper class. She grew more egocentric and dominant, insisting on having things her way.
Even Radit's opinions on their marital life were often dismissed by Tari.
"What must I do for you to forgive me, Sister Bulan?" asked Radit, finding the courage to look directly at her.
"Give me time, Brother. This is too much to bear, but I cannot give up on my life. Let's forget that night ever happened, pretend it was never there," Bulan responded, braving a look at Radit despite the noticeable fear she still harbored toward him.
