Bonjour à tous!

Phoebe

(Maybe he's tinkering with the furnace again and lost track of time.)

I open the basement door. A lamp burns at the top of the stairs.

Phoebe

Father?Are you down there?

I grab the lamp and walk down a few steps.

Phoebe

Father?

Only silence and cold darkness answer me.

I shiver and close the door after blowing out the lamp.

Phoebe

(It's not like him to leave a lamp burning unattended.)

Phoebe

(Something isn't right.)

A gush of adrenaline flows through my body.

This is not good

I don't have a good feeling about this.

I face the door to the study again , clenching my fists.

Phoebe

(Father will be upset if he finds out I entered his study.)

Phoebe

(But what if he's in there and is hurt?)

My concern wins out and I take a deep breath and open the door.

...

The study is empty.

I touch one of the candle wicks and frown.

Phoebe

(It's cold, father hasn't been here for sometime.)

Nothing appears out of place.
