The night falls and it had started to rain; Emma was in the living room playing with Isadora. Diogo hadn’t returned, and a storm was brewing outside. Emma was beginning to feel afraid as the rain grew heavy. Suddenly, the living room door swung open, and Diogo entered, drenched. Emma ran over and embraced him. Diogo stood there, paralyzed and confused about her actions, but when he touched her back, he felt her tense and trembling. She quickly realized what she had just done and released him.
Emma: Sorry.
Diogo: Why did you do that?
Emma: I’m sorry, it was just an impulse.
Just as Diogo was about to speak, a loud clap of thunder echoed, and she hugged him again. He understood what was happening and smiled.
Diogo: Are you scared?
Emma: N..No.
Diogo: You’re trembling, and it’s not from the cold; the heater is on.
Emma: Okay, I’m afraid of thunder.
Diogo: If you keep hugging me, we’re going to get sick.
Emma: Sorry.
She released him and returned to the sofa. Isadora was calm and didn’t mind the thunder. Diogo went upstairs to the bedroom, and Emma soon followed to change her clothes. She rushed back down to the living room, curling up on the sofa and watching Isadora play. Diogo came back down after showering, dressed in a tracksuit and holding a blanket. He approached Emma, covering her and sitting beside her on the sofa.
Diogo: You don’t need to be scared; it’s just a shock because of the noise. You're safe in here.
Emma: Where did you go? I thought you wouldn’t come back today.
Diogo: I went to the office.
Emma: Oh.
Another thunderclap made Emma cover her head with the blanket, and Diogo laughed at her, pulling it off.
Diogo: Haha, come here... pulls her onto his chest... you’re such a scaredy-cat.
Emma: Don’t laugh.
Diogo: Haha, okay.
Emma: Stop it.
He tried to suppress his laughter and embraced her. She sat with her head on his shoulder and his hand on her back. She closed her eyes, attempting to relax, but the thunder was loud, scaring her. She squeezed his leg, and he held her tighter. Isadora saw them together and climbed onto Diogo’s lap, sitting between them. Emma embraced her while Diogo hugged both girls. Isadora watched her cartoon on TV as Emma tried to relax. Diogo ran his fingers through her hair, reaching for her, and she closed her eyes, letting herself unwind.
Hours passed, and the thunder subsided, leaving only the sound of heavy rain. Isadora fell asleep, and Diogo picked her up and took her to the bedroom before returning to the living room. Emma was lying on the sofa, and Diogo sat on another one.
Emma: Do you want dinner?
Diogo: I’m not hungry.
Emma: But you didn’t have dinner.
Diogo: I’ll eat something later.
Emma: Fine.
Emma stood up and headed to the kitchen. She took some cold cuts from the fridge and made herself a sandwich. While she was preparing juice, Diogo appeared in the kitchen, took a bite of her sandwich, and she exclaimed,
Emma: I can’t believe you did that!
Diogo: It’s delicious.
Emma: You said you didn’t want to eat.
Diogo: But you didn’t ask if it was a sandwich; you said dinner.
Emma: Oh my God, eat that one, and I’ll make another.
Diogo: I want another one.
Emma: There’s juice.
Diogo: Okay.
He sat at the counter and ate the sandwich while Emma made more. He watched her, and then she sat down to eat with him.
Diogo: I didn’t know you could cook.
Emma: You don’t know a lot of things.
Diogo: Why don’t you say them?
Emma: Because we’re not close.
Diogo: Because you don’t want to.
Emma: Because I’m your employee, and it’s not appropriate.
Diogo: So many why’s.
Emma: Indeed.
Diogo: Did your fear pass?
Emma: Yes, thank you for staying by my side, and I’m sorry too.
Diogo: You don’t need to apologize.
Emma: I’m going to wash these dishes; are you still going to eat?
Diogo: No.
Emma collected the plates and glasses, taking them to the sink. As she began to wash them, he kept watching her. He left a glass in the sink, and suddenly the power went out. Emma startled and hugged him.
Emma: What happened?
Diogo: The power went out.
Emma: Oh my God, what now?
Diogo: Calm down; the security guards will turn on the generator.
She continued holding onto him, and he held her back. He tried to think of something else, but feeling her body against his only made him want to kiss her.
He shifts, turning and pressing her against the sink; he touches her chin, lifting her face, and feels her quickened breath.
Emma: What are you doing?
Diogo: Shhh
He leans in closer to her face and touches his lips to hers; his hand tightens around her waist as he kisses her. She wasn’t expecting this and remains still. He grips her hair tightly, and she slightly parts her lips, giving him the chance to deepen the kiss. At first, she doesn’t respond, but she can’t help herself and begins to kiss him back. She places her hands on the nape of his neck while he pulls her closer. As the tension heats up, Emma pauses, gasping for air.
Emma: Diogo
Diogo: Shhh, don’t say anything; is it too much for you to just enjoy the moment?
Emma: I can’t do this.
Diogo: Can't or won’t?
Emma: Both.
Diogo: Why do you have to be so difficult?
Emma: I can’t allow myself to get hurt.
Diogo: Just don’t develop feelings.
Emma: I can’t.
She tries to pull away, but he doesn’t let her.
Diogo: You’re beautiful.
Emma: You’re not seeing me.
Diogo: But you are beautiful.
Emma: Stop.
Diogo: I want to be with you, Emma.
Emma: You just did that.
Diogo: I’m not talking like that; I want to be with you without having to steal a kiss. Let’s have one night, and then we can go back to how it was before.
Emma: No, Diogo, I’m not one of those women you just hook up with and say goodbye; I won’t be on your list.
Diogo: What do you want? For me to ask you out or propose?
Emma: No, never that. I want you to respect me and stop acting this way. I’m not an object; one day you humiliate me, and the next day you kiss me. One day you don’t talk to me, and then you think you can control me.
Diogo: Okay, I won’t push anymore; from now on, you’re a man to me.
Emma: Do you have your phone?
Diogo: No, it’s in the living room.
Emma: Mine too.
Diogo: Let’s walk to the living room; hold my hand.
Emma: Alright.
They walk slowly, arms outstretched to avoid hitting anything, but Emma ends up bumping her belly into something and feels a sting. They stop, and he leaves her there while he heads to the living room. He sees her phone lit up, which makes it easier for him to find his own. He grabs it, turns on the flashlight, and goes back to her.
Diogo: Are you okay?
Emma: Yes.
Diogo: That’s a lie; lift your shirt.
Emma: It just stings a little.
Diogo: Let me see; I think you hit the table on that edge.
Emma lifts her shirt, revealing an open cut that’s bleeding, and he grows concerned.
Diogo: What the heck?
Emma: It doesn’t hurt.
Diogo: Sit here; I’m going to get something to clean this up.
She sits in a chair while he heads to the kitchen. He grabs a first-aid kit and returns to the dining room.
Diogo: Just wait a minute.
He calls someone to turn on the generator while he takes things out of the box, setting them aside. The lights come on, and he notices a pained expression on Emma’s face.
Diogo: Such a liar; let me clean that up.
Emma: It’s fine, I can do it.
Diogo: Be quiet; we’re going to the living room.
They go, and she sits on the sofa. He lays her back and begins to clean the blood that stained her. He lowers her pants a bit, exposing her underwear as he cleans the cut, applying medicine as she winces from the sting. He looks at her and blows gently on the wound, starting to bandage it while she pulls her shirt down and sits up straight.
