“No, I’m not. You’re just being nosy.”
“Sure I am. I’m the bad friend, remember?”
“I didn’t mean it like that, Stace.”
“I know you didn’t.” Stacy crosses her arms. “You still mad?”
“Obviously not.”
“Yes, you are.”
Olivia groans. “No, I’m—”
“Don’t worry,” Stacy cuts in, dramatic as ever. “I’ll give you all your precious privacy.”
Olivia sighs, dragging a hand down her face. “You’re impossible.”
Stacy turned away dramatically, pulling the blanket over her head. Within seconds, fake snoring filled the room.
Olivia rolled her eyes and opened her laptop again, the glow of the screen lighting up her face.
Goldenboy: You still alive, Cupid? Thought maybe you ghosted me already.
Cupid: You wish. I was busy dealing with real problems, not golden ones.
Goldenboy: Ouch. You really don’t like me, huh?
Cupid: I don’t dislike you. I just have a low tolerance for cockiness.
Goldenboy: So… you do like me a little.
Olivia stared at the screen, lips twitching. “You’re so full of yourself,” she muttered.
Cupid: Delusional much?
Goldenboy: Confident. There’s a difference.
Olivia laughed softly, shaking her head. Stacy’s fake snores got louder.
“Not fooling anyone,” Olivia whispered, typing again.
Cupid: Not so confident when I find your dream girl.
Goldenboy: I think I already found her.
Cupid: Who? Your mom?
Goldenboy: I was gonna say you, but you ruined the whole thing.
Cupid: What if I’m a guy, not a girl?
Goldenboy: You just said what if, so you’re a girl.
Olivia froze for a second, staring at the screen. For once, Cupid had no comeback.
She quickly gathered herself and started typing.
Cupid: Saying what if doesn’t mean anything.
Goldenboy: Yes it does. A lot.
Cupid: How so?
Goldenboy: You tell me.
Olivia stared at the blinking cursor, her heart doing something it absolutely shouldn’t.
Cupid: You have a way with your mouth.
Goldenboy: Well, you have a way with yours.
Cupid: I guess we’re even.
Goldenboy: Maybe.
Cupid: Anyway, I’ve got to go—working on finding your dream girl, remember?
Goldenboy: Goodnight, princess.
Cupid: Not your princess.
Goldenboy: Not yet.
Olivia bit her lip, closing the chat window before she could grin any harder. “Not yet,” she muttered under her breath, shaking her head.
Leaning back in her chair, her thoughts were all over the place. She’d never flirted with a client before—what the hell was that?
She let out a long breath, trying to shake it off. “It’s fine,” she told herself, shutting her laptop. “Totally fine.”
Deciding to ignore the weird fluttering in her chest, Olivia crawled into bed and pulled the blanket over her head. Sleep first. Panic later.
Olivia woke up late. Stacy was already out of the dorm, and her head was still spinning.
“Shit.”
She groaned, dragging herself out of bed and pulling on her hoodie. There was this stupid, fluttery feeling in her chest that refused to die down.
“Ugh, stop it, Olivia. It’s just another client,” she muttered to herself as she brushed her hair. “What are you even getting worked up for?”
She stared at her reflection in the mirror — messy bun, sleepy eyes, faint smile she didn’t remember putting there.
“Finish this and get your life together, Cupid.”
She sighed, grabbed her bag, and headed out.
