Calix told him everything, about the marriage and the aftermath of rejecting it. He skipped talking about the injuries that couldn't be seen.

Kevin's heart hurt seeing his best friend mask his pain and hide it under cruel humor. If they weren't in the class, Kevin would be a crying mess.

Good Morning, class! *smiles*
All the kids stood up to greet it the teacher. Although they were in college, they were disciplined and enthusiastic.
This was an elective course on Literary Criticism and not many people were there to begin with. The ones present were all interested in the course.
The teacher for the course was fairly young, he looked not a day older than 25, which was rare for college.
After the students settled down, Ryle begun the class.

How could we, sir? Reading Anna Karenina in a day is almost impossible.

That's good. Honestly, it doesn't really have to be read that fast but sometimes, a book reads better when you are racing against time.
Calix's ears turned red after being addressed directly. He really hadn't done anything great. He finished the book because he wanted to stay awake while his mother and father argued downstairs, lest something go wrong.
The class continued like that.

After the class was empty, Calix went near the teacher's table.

All the excitement Calix felt was replaced by cold anxiety. He didn't want to tell him.

Ryle was almost a head taller than Calix. He stood up and took out the first aid kit from his bag.

Ryle begun putting ointment on his bruises. He maintained a decent distance between them. Calix didn't know if he felt relaxed or disappointed.

You are an adult so it is not really my place to say this but, if something is wrong you can tell me.

He didn't continue because he didn't know what else to say.
How was he supposed to tell him that his own father was the cause of these bruises and suppose he did tell him, what next? He didn't have enough evidence or money to get his father arrested. The nightmare would only become worse.
He stopped the tears filling his eyes and spoke jovially.

Ryle stepped away to allow Calix to get off the table. Calix jumped down and his face contorted in pain. Had his father hit his legs too?

*smiles* It's okay. I am late for class. I will get going now.

Oh, by the way, did you decide the author for your thesis?

Decide quickly. You only have a few more weeks before it's due.
Instead of going to class, Calix went to the washroom. He entered a stall and rolled up his trousers.
His entire left leg was bruised.

It only hurts when I touch it or jump around.
He unrolled his trousers and went back to class.

Perhaps marriage is the only escape left.
