Chapter 4: Secrets Unveiled
The first weeks at Duskwatch Academy were a gauntlet of trials, and Liam quickly learned that survival meant more than excelling in academics.
As a human, he was constantly underestimated. His peers, both human and vampire, mocked his quiet demeanor, and the academy’s rigid hierarchy pushed humans to the fringes.
Still, Liam endured, his mind sharp and his resilience unyielding. The moment with Lucian Draevor in the sparring arena had set the tone for his time here, drawing attention he hadn’t sought but now couldn’t escape.
Lucian, true to his word, seemed to have his eyes on Liam. They crossed paths more often than Liam thought coincidental, and each encounter left him questioning more about himself and the enigmatic vampire noble.
One day, in a lecture on the ancient bloodlines, Liam sat near the back, trying to blend in.
The room was filled with tension as the instructor detailed the storied history of the vampire nobility. Humans listened in silence, while vampires basked in the tales of their supremacy.
Instructor
“The Draevor lineage.”
The instructor intoned, gesturing to an elaborate tapestry depicting a crescent moon entwined with a crimson rose.
Instructor
“has always stood at the pinnacle of power. Their influence is rivaled only by their mystery."
Instructor
"Legends speak of their connection to the Blood Moon, a celestial event tied to prophecy and forbidden power.”
Liam felt a chill at the mention of the Blood Moon, though he didn’t understand why. He shifted in his seat, glancing toward Lucian.
To his surprise, Lucian’s eyes were on him, a faint smirk playing on his lips as if he knew something Liam didn’t.
The days blurred into nights, each one bringing new challenges and deeper questions. Lucian’s presence loomed over him, their interactions brief yet charged.
Despite their differences, an unspoken connection began to form a magnetic pull that neither could fully explain.
The academy’s annual masquerade ball was the event of the season, a dazzling affair meant to symbolize unity between humans and vampires.
In reality, it was more a display of wealth and power, with humans relegated to the edges of the festivities.
Still, for many, it was a rare chance to experience the splendor of the vampire world up close.
Liam, dressed in borrowed finery, felt out of place as he entered the grand hall. The room was breathtaking, with crystal chandeliers casting shimmering light over a sea of masked figures.
The vampires moved with an effortless grace, their elaborate costumes and intricate masks exuding an air of superiority.
As Liam tried to fade into the background, a familiar voice stopped him in his tracks.
Lucian Draevor (Ml)
“Enjoying the view, Liam?”
He turned to see Lucian Draevor standing before him, his mask a sleek black adorned with silver filigree. Even in disguise, his crimson eyes shone with an unsettling intensity.
Liam Ashford (Mc)
“It’s... overwhelming.”
Lucian chuckled, a sound both mocking and amused.
Lucian Draevor (Ml)
“You look like a deer caught in the hunter’s sights.”
He stepped closer, his presence as commanding as ever.
Lucian Draevor (Ml)
“But I suppose you’re used to that by now.”
Before Liam could respond, Lucian extended a hand.
Lucian Draevor (Ml)
“Dance with me.”
The words weren’t a request, and the room seemed to pause as Liam hesitated. He felt the weight of countless eyes on them, the tension palpable.
Against his better judgment, he placed his hand in Lucian’s, allowing the vampire to lead him onto the dance floor.
The music swelled as they began to move, Lucian guiding him with an ease that made Liam’s nervousness all the more glaring.
Yet as the dance continued, Liam found himself matching Lucian’s steps, the rhythm becoming second nature.
Lucian Draevor (Ml)
“You’ve been hiding something.”
Lucian murmured, his voice low and dangerously close.
Lucian Draevor (Ml)
I see it in the way you move, the way you fight. You’re not just another human, are you?”
Liam stiffened, his mind racing for an answer. But before he could speak, the grand hall erupted into chaos.
The doors burst open, and a group of rogue vampires stormed in, their eyes wild and fangs bared. Guests screamed as the intruders attacked indiscriminately, their bloodlust unchecked.
The masquerade transformed into a battleground, the elegance of the evening shattered in an instant.
Lucian’s grip on Liam tightened.
Lucian Draevor (Ml)
“Stay close.”
He commanded, his voice sharp.
But as the chaos spread, something inside Liam shifted. His heart raced, his vision sharpened, and his body moved with a speed and precision that defied explanation.
He dodged an incoming strike with ease, his movements fluid and instinctive.
Lucian turned to him, his eyes widening in recognition.
Lucian Draevor (Ml)
“You…”
He began, but his words were cut off as another attacker lunged at them.
The two fought side by side, an unspoken coordination guiding their movements. Lucian’s attacks were swift and lethal, his vampiric strength cutting through their enemies with ease.
But it was Liam who drew the most attention. His actions defied logic, dodging blows, striking with precision, and exhibiting a strength no human should possess.
As the last rogue fell, the room fell silent, save for the ragged breaths of the survivors. Lucian stared at Liam, his crimson eyes filled with a mixture of awe and suspicion.
Lucian Draevor (Ml)
“Who are you?”
Lucian demanded, his voice low but intense.
Liam shook his head, his chest heaving.
Liam Ashford (Mc)
“I don’t know...”
He admitted, the words feeling both true and terrifying.
Lucian stepped closer, his gaze piercing.
Lucian Draevor (Ml)
“I do.”
He said, his voice barely a whisper.
Lucian Draevor (Ml)
“You’re connected to the Blood Moon. And if I’m right, your existence changes everything.”
Liam’s heart pounded as the weight of Lucian’s words settled over him. The Blood Moon, the prophecy, everything was beginning to make sense. And yet, it only raised more questions.
As the academy’s guards rushed in to secure the hall, Lucian placed a hand on Liam’s shoulder.
Lucian Draevor (Ml)
“We need to talk.”
He said, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Liam nodded, his mind a whirlwind of fear, curiosity, and something else, an undeniable pull toward Lucian Draevor and the truths he seemed to hold.
