Chapter 3: A Dangerous Dance
Liam’s first day at Duskwatch Academy unfolded like a strange dream, with moments of both awe and unease.
The academy’s grandeur was undeniable, its towering gothic spires loomed over him as if to remind every student of their place within its walls.
But beneath its breathtaking architecture lurked an unspoken hierarchy.
Humans and vampires walked the same halls, yet their shared space felt more like a silent battlefield than a place of learning.
The moment with Lucian Draevor lingered in Liam’s mind like an itch he couldn’t scratch. The silver-haired vampire’s piercing eyes, the smirk that held too many secrets, it all unsettled him.
And yet, Liam couldn’t deny a strange pull toward him, like the universe had tethered them together in some unseen way.
After the orientation, Liam wandered the halls, trying to avoid attention. The humans at Duskwatch Academy were few and far between, and it was painfully clear where they stood in the social order.
The vampire students moved with an effortless grace, their confidence palpable, while the humans clung to the edges of the crowd, careful not to draw too much notice.
Liam hated the oppressive air of superiority, but he kept his head low for now.
His first class of the day was combat training, held in a massive arena that seemed carved out of stone and shadow.
The space was vast, with raised seating for observers and a central ring for sparring matches.
The air smelled faintly of sweat and the metallic tang of blood, a reminder of the academy’s brutal standards.
Liam kept to the back of the group as the instructor, a grizzled vampire with a no-nonsense demeanor, began pairing students off for practice.
The humans were clearly at a disadvantage, their matches ending quickly and often humiliatingly.
The vampires didn’t just have superior strength and speed, they fought with centuries of instinct and precision.
When the instructor called Liam’s name, he felt every eye in the room turn toward him.
His opponent was a vampire named Aric a smug, broad-shouldered boy with sharp fangs and a cocky grin.

“This’ll be over quick.”
Aric sneered, cracking his knuckles.
Liam stepped into the ring, his heart pounding. He didn’t want to fight, but there was no way out without drawing even more attention.
As Aric lunged at him, Liam moved on instinct, his body reacting faster than his mind could process. He dodged the attack with surprising agility, his movements sharp and fluid.
The crowd murmured in surprise.
Aric snarled and came at him again, but Liam ducked and spun away, his feet moving as if they had been trained for this his entire life.
Somewhere deep in his muscle memory, something had awakened, a skill he didn’t remember learning, yet it felt like second nature.
The fight lasted longer than anyone expected, with Liam holding his ground against the vampire’s relentless assaults.
But eventually, Aric’s superior strength and endurance won out, and Liam found himself on the ground, gasping for breath.

“Enough.”
The instructor barked, stepping in to end the match.
Aric smirked down at Liam before walking away, but the look in his eyes wasn’t just smugness, it was disbelief.
He hadn’t expected a human to last even a fraction of that time.
Liam pushed himself to his feet, his body aching but his pride intact.
As he brushed himself off, he felt a presence behind him.
???
???
“Impressive.”
A smooth voice said, sending a shiver down Liam’s spine.
He turned to see Lucian standing at the edge of the ring, his crimson eyes fixed on him.
Liam’s breath caught. Lucian's presence was overwhelming, his aura commanding yet oddly magnetic.
The vampire noble’s expression was unreadable, but there was a glint of curiosity in his gaze.
Lucian Draevor (Ml)

“You move well for a human.”

“But let’s see how you fare against someone more... challenging.”
Before Liam could respond, Lucian stepped into the ring, his movements fluid and deliberate.
The crowd fell silent, their attention snapping to the heir of House Draevor. Even the instructor didn’t dare intervene.
Liam’s instincts screamed at him to back down, but something in Lucian’s eyes stopped him. There was a challenge there, a spark that ignited something deep within him.

“I’m not afraid.”
Liam said, surprising even himself.
Lucian's lips curved into a faint smile.

“Good.”
The fight began, and it was unlike anything Liam had ever experienced. Damian was fast, too fast. His attacks were precise, his movements almost graceful.
Liam barely had time to react, dodging and parrying with every ounce of strength he had.
But for every move Liam made, Damian was already two steps ahead. It was clear the vampire wasn’t fighting at full strength, but there was something else in his movements, a calculated restraint, as if he were testing Liam rather than defeating him.
The duel ended quickly, with Damian pinning Liam to the ground, his crimson eyes glowing faintly.

“You’re not like the others,” he murmured.

“I wonder... what are you hiding?”
Liam stared up at him, his heart pounding. He didn’t have an answer, not for Lucian, not even for himself.
Lucian rose to his feet, offering Liam a hand.

“I’ll be watching you.”
He said, his tone both a promise and a warning.
As Lucian walked away, the crowd erupted into whispers, but Liam barely heard them. His mind was spinning, his body still trembling from the encounter.
What had Lucian seen in him? And why did Liam feel like Lucian’s words carried more weight than he could understand?
The rest of the day passed in a blur. Liam couldn’t shake the feeling that he had stepped into something far greater than himself.
Duskwatch Academy was more than a school, it was a stage for power, secrets, and something darker lurking beneath the surface. And somehow, he was at the center of it all.
When night fell, Liam lay in his modest dorm room, staring at the ceiling. Lucian’s words echoed in his mind, mingling with the memories of his strange, instinctive abilities.

"What am I hiding?" he wondered.
Sleep didn’t come easily that night, but when it did, it brought strange dreams, visions of blood, moonlight, and eyes that glowed like fire.
