Chapter 17
This was a wonderful idea. I’d have to buy Dad a box of cigars as a
thank-you. Not only was Jun at a good age to learn how to swim, but I
got to meet new people. This was the second lesson, and I’d already spoken
to three people I wasn’t related to.
I grinned to myself as Jun jumped into the water with the other kids.
Then I walked over to the corner of the pool where there was a modest café
for parents and proud grandparents.
I ordered a cup of coffee, regretting that decision as soon as I sat down.
In this heat and humidity, I should’ve bought a bottle of water.
I looked up to see a woman smiling ruefully.

By all means,
I nudged out the chair next to me.
Kim Taehyung
I was just thinking
how foolish it was to buy coffee.
She laughed softly and pulled her blond hair back into a ponytail. She
struck me as a very ordinary mum—no makeup, unwashed hair, and
perhaps she was lacking a bit of sleep. I found her all the more appealing
for it. It was relatable. Maybe I wore a suit—because I hadn’t been home
yet today—but underneath it all, I was ready to fall asleep on my feet. I was
hungry too.

Taehyung. Nice to meet you.
Kim Taehyung
Which one of the little rascals is yours?
She peered over at the pool and pointed.
Lisa
Ara—the five-year-old
goofball clinging to the instructor.
I smiled at the little girl, dark hair plastered across her face, as she
expressed her excitement about something. Like my Jun, she loved the
water.
Kim Taehyung
She’s precious.
Lisa
I think I saw you last week. You have
two boys, right?
I pointed out Jun in the water, another one who fit the goofball bill,
then loosened my tie
Kim Taehyung
Two, yes. Yeong’s my eldest. He’s eight going on
eighty and wanted to spend the evening with his grandfather instead.
Lisa
I know that feeling. My husband was going to take
Ara to swimming lessons, but he not-so-subtly suggested this might do
me good. I don’t get out of the apartment much otherwise, and I crash at
nine
Kim Taehyung
Nine is late,**I joked**
Kim Taehyung
I could drop at seven.
Lisa
Right?**eyes lit up**
