If You Could Go Back (Taekook)
Chapter 16
When the day was over, I turned to my sister. She was the best sounding
board I had, but I planned on rethinking that after I’d vented and she laughed at me.
She kept chuckling while she set aside the teapot, and I slumped back in
a seat at the kitchen table. Yeong was watching a documentary in the living
room, so I had time to sulk.
Hana
This is just so very you, Taehyung
Hana
That's why I wanted you
to partake in my colleague’s study.
Kim Taehyung
Will you stop seeing me as a subject to research?
Hana
Where’s the fun in that? **She grinned**
Hana
Make
no mistake, the theory is not without flaws. But you, my dear little brother,
are easy. You seek out mystery and suspense because you lack it.
Kim Taehyung
You’re saying my life is dull.
Hana
No, Taehyung **gaze softened**
Hana
“You are. You haven’t been happy in
quite some time, and you continually beat yourself up for everything
Jennie does. It isn’t fair to you.
Hana
When is she coming home?
I cleared my throat and focused on stirring the lemon in my tea.
Kim Taehyung
Since she took classes over the summer, she said she’d try to make it home
most weekends starting in a few weeks.
Kim Taehyung
Can
we change the topic now?
I didn’t enjoy discussing Jennie. There were too many conflicting
emotions. Most of the time, I was stuck between missing her and resenting
her. The latter sparked guilt that weighed heavily on me
My sister and I didn’t have the best experiences with female role
models, though she had certainly turned into one herself. Our mum left us
when I was eleven, only to make that a habit. She would get bored and
leave, come home when she missed us, then leave again. When I was
fourteen, she died in a bus accident in Brazil
Hana
You should ask this Jungkook out for a
beer. You need more friends in your life
She wasn’t wrong. The problem was I didn’t know how to make friends
as an adult. Was there a protocol? If I asked him to meet up for happy hour
and he didn’t have time, did that mean he wasn’t interested or that he
genuinely didn’t have the time? I could always count on my father to watch
the boys, but most men and women my age lived on a tight schedule.
Kim Taehyung
I’ll think about it.
I took a sip of my tea before checking the time. One
cup, then I’d tear Yeong away from the TV.
