Through the window, I observed the luxury vehicles parking in our garden, the most important families of the mafia. With my arms crossed, I let out a shaky breath, preparing to assume my responsibilities as a mafia daughter.
I couldn't tell if Dominique and the Venturelli brothers had already arrived. I wouldn't recognize them so easily without a formal introduction, as it had been years since I had seen any of them, except for Gilliam, who was easier to identify due to his fame.
Dad left me out of the events, allowing me to attend only those organized for women. Thus, he avoided unnecessary exposure on my part.
I walked away from the window, walked over to the vanity mirror, and stared at my reflection for long seconds, in complete silence.
My brown hair was tied in a loose bun and my bangs covered part of my eyebrows. My green eyes were highlighted by a thick layer of mascara and my full lips were covered in nude lipstick.
I leaned over the furniture and spread my hands on top of the surface, sighing.
The bodice of my white strapless dress accentuated my breasts, the skirt fell to above my knees, and I wore light heels on my feet. It was a simple outfit, but it made me look sexy and attractive.
I ran my fingers down my body and let out a humorless laugh.
"The blessed day hasn't even arrived and I'm already wearing white," I muttered softly.
I adjusted my posture and took a deep breath, preparing to leave the comfort of my room and face the demons of the mafia.
To make matters worse, I was forbidden to leave the house because, according to my father, the enemies knew about the wedding and there was a bounty on my head. In other words, my life was at risk every damn second of the day.
"Come on, Carmen. You can do this…" I muttered, controlling my breathing.
I would be a naive, delicate, and helpful bride. At least that's how I should behave in front of them.
A faint noise sounded from one of the French doors that led to the pool deck. I narrowed my eyes towards the spot, feeling my heart beat erratically in a frantic rhythm.
I waited, in absolute silence.
It could just be an insect or a bird. Maybe an owl.
With my vision sharpened by imminent distrust, I saw the moment the doorknob turned and the door was pushed inwards. I held my breath.
A man dressed in black appeared in my field of vision as I crouched down next to the dressing table, hiding from the imbecile criminal.
Was it a sign that this marriage was going to be a chaotic disaster? It could only be.
"I'm inside her room, but it seems empty," he whispered.
The idiot walked around my room, looking for any sign of my presence. I leaned against the wall as I watched him approach, his eyes scanning every corner.
"She must have gone downstairs just before I arrived, but I can wait. At some point, this charade will be over and the little bride will come back to sleep," he announced.
Oh my God! So it was true that there was a bounty on my head now. They even sent a man into my house to kill me! And our house had never been broken into before, never! Okay, I was really irritated.
As if the forced marriage wasn't enough, I still had to put up with these jerks chasing me? Oh hell no!
I stood up in one swift motion and approached the idiot. Detecting my presence, he spun in my direction, but not fast enough to intervene in the five-inch stiletto kick I delivered to his thigh.
He screamed and took two steps back, holding his hands to his injured leg.
"You little bitch, I'll…" he choked on his words as his trachea was hit. He rolled his eyes and opened his mouth, desperate for air to feed his lungs.
"How dare you offend me in my own home?" I hissed, finishing the blows with a well-aimed kick between his legs, crushing his testicles. "And you even break into my room? Where are your manners with a lady of society?"
He fell to his knees. There weren't enough hands to press on all the places that had been hit.
Now I understood why I had kept my abilities hidden, the element of surprise was the best of all. No one expected me to know how to fight back. They thought I would be an easy target, which ended up making things difficult for them and easier for me. If all enemies were imbeciles like this one, I would have a lot of fun.
"I'm going to kill you," he growled through gritted teeth.
I made a move to punch him in the nose, but stopped the blow midway, my hand suspended in the air. I couldn't leave any marks. He was on Camorra territory and had breached the barriers of one of the most important family heads. They would want to interrogate him, after all, it was clear that in order to achieve all this, there was an informant in our family.
