Episode 6

CHRISTOPHER FERRER

When I woke up, my wife wasn't in my arms anymore. After going through my daily routine, I went downstairs and she was already having breakfast with our son, Christopher. The breakfast went by in complete silence until I asked her about her plans for the day. She told me she would accompany her friend to the mall. I asked if she would take Christopher with her, and she said she would if I allowed it. I told her that he is her son now, and she doesn't have to ask me; she just needs to inform me of their whereabouts. When I mentioned that I would be going to the office, she looked surprised and reminded me that it was Sunday. I simply confirmed that I would go and left.

As I was working at the office, my mother arrived, ready to ruin my peace.

"Can I know what you're doing here?" angrily questioned my mother.

"As far as I know, I work here," I replied, not giving it much importance.

"You got married yesterday, so why aren't you with your wife?" she asked.

"She went out with her friend to buy some things for her university and took Christopher," I responded.

"And why didn't you accompany her? Go back home right now," my mother said.

"I will go after I finish some tasks. I'm not leaving right now. She's with her friend at the mall. I'm not going shopping with two teenagers," I said, a little annoyed.

"Son, I don't know how your marriage went, but it's obvious it wasn't for love. But at least make an effort to make it work. You don't have to work every day of the week. Spend more time with your son and your wife," my mother spoke, annoyed.

"Fine, mother. I'll finish here and go home to wait for my wife and son," I said, tired of my mother constantly lecturing me.

"I hope so," my mother left my office, annoyed.

I worked for a while longer and returned to the mansion. I asked around, but they hadn't arrived yet. I had something to eat and spent some time in the gym. After showering, I went down to the living room to read, but Alana arrived with a sleeping Christopher. I picked him up and took him to his room. I laid him on the bed, and she nestled him so he could continue sleeping. I asked her if she had grown fond of him, and she replied, "How could I not? He's a beautiful prince." I told her he looked like me, but she said he was more beautiful, tender, and that he had feelings. I didn't say anything and left the room. It bothered me that she thinks I have no feelings, but I do. It's just that I don't know how to show them anymore. I didn't want to dwell on that and returned to the living room, where my mother was.

"What now, mother?" I asked.

"I came to have dinner with my son, his wife, and my grandson. Can't I?" she asked.

"You can, but dinner is still about four or five hours away. It seems you arrived too early," I responded.

"Well, I am going to prepare dinner, and I don't want my daughter-in-law's help. Should I call her, or will you?" my mother asked.

"Alright, I'll go get her," I responded, retracing my steps to the room where I left her, but she wasn't there. So, I went to our bedroom. When I entered, she was in bed.

"Is something wrong?" she asked.

"My mother is downstairs. She wants to prepare dinner with you, sorry," I said, feeling uncomfortable.

"Why are you apologizing?" she asked, getting up to grab her shoes.

"I know her and I know she's up to something, so be careful, okay?" I said, a bit anxious because I know my mother is planning something, and I don't know what it is. That worries me.

"Don't worry, if you knew everything I've been through at my young age, you would realize that not everyone can surprise me. Now, with your permission, I'll go and prepare dinner with my mother-in-law," she said, leaving the room without letting me speak.

And there I was, pondering what Alana has been through and why her grandfather wanted to protect her, why he preferred her to marry me instead of being with her family. I have to find out as soon as possible; I don't like having the feeling that something is being hidden from me.

I went back down to the living room, but just as I was about to start reading, Christopher woke up and decided to put the book aside.

"Daddy, where's my mommy?" he asked, sitting next to me.

"You're in the kitchen with your grandmother, today you will prepare dinner," I replied.

"Yes, Grandma cooks very deliciously," I said, rubbing her belly.

"That's true, but tell me, what did you do with your mom today?" I asked, and she told me everything. They went shopping, ate out, got ice cream. She told me a lot about how much her mom and aunt love him, and that reassures me because I married her so he could have a mother, and it seems like he got the best one, with an aunt included. But still, I need to know more about Alana.

"Christopher, let's change and get you ready for dinner. Your mother and grandmother are busy, I'll help you today," I said, getting up.

"Okay," he said, getting up. Together, we went to his room. I prepared the tub for him and helped him get in. I helped wash his hair, and when he was done, I wrapped him in a towel and helped him get dressed.

"Daddy, do you love my mom?" he asked.

"Yes, why do you ask?" I asked while helping him put on his shoes.

"Because I want a sibling," he said. Few things surprise me in life, and one of them is my child. Yesterday, he was crying because I got married and he thought I would have children with my wife, and now he wants a sibling.

"Son, that's something your mother and I need to talk about. Besides, we just got married, we need to wait some time before discussing that topic," I said.

"Okay," he said, sounding a little sad.

"Let's have dinner," my mother's voice echoed. She's the only one who would shout like that in the mansion.

"Yes, let's go," my son said and ran off. That son of mine changes moods very easily.

I followed Christopher down to the table, where he was sitting with his mother and grandmother when I arrived.

"Son, Alana surprised me, she cooks very well," my mother said.

"Really? I didn't know, but I like it," I said, taking my place.

During the whole dinner, my mother kept talking wonders about Alana and me. It seemed like she was selling us to each other. Alana didn't know whether to laugh or cry, and I simply ignored her. It's my mother, and I know how to deal with her. My mother left, and I went to my office. Alana went upstairs with Christopher. When I finished some work in my office, I went to rest. When I arrived, Alana was asleep, embracing Christopher. So, I changed and got into bed, embracing both of them. It feels good to have them both here, but I know that sooner or later, Alana and I will get divorced, so it's better not to get accustomed to each other.
