Episode 8

CHRISTOPHER FERRER

When I woke up and heard what my son told Alana, I wanted to kill those employees. I asked my son who said those things and left the room, blinded by anger. Those women will pay for making my son cry; the main reason I married Alana was to never see him cry again. And now, it turns out that two idle employees dare to talk about the lives of their employers behind their backs.

"Mauricio," I yelled at the person in charge of the company's personnel, who is already an elderly man and has worked with my parents and now with me.

"What has upset you so much, sir?" Mauricio asked.

"Gather all the staff in the garden," I said angrily, and he immediately did as I requested. Within minutes, everyone was gathered.

"Everyone is here, sir," Mauricio announced.

"Let me be clear, my son overheard two employees gossiping about my wife and saying that when she gets tired of taking care of a child who's not hers, she'll leave. My son cried because of their words. Now, I will give the women who dared to talk about my family behind our backs a chance to come forward and admit their mistake. Of course, they will be fired, but if they don't acknowledge their error, not only will they lose their jobs, but I will also make sure they never find work, not even as janitors." I said, angry, and began to count. "One, two, and..."

"It was us, sir," said two employees who confirmed that they were the ones my son mentioned.

"Get out of my house, and of course, you will leave without any severance pay," I told them, and they ran away.

"Consider this a warning. Anyone who dares to speak ill or look disrespectfully at anyone in my family, my wife, or my son, will not only lose their jobs but I will make sure they end up living under a bridge. Is that clear?" I spoke extremely annoyed.

"Yes, sir," they all replied.

"Now, leave," I said, and everyone went away.

"Mauricio, take care of hiring two new employees who are quiet and respectful. I don't want any more problems. My son and wife shouldn't have to go through difficult times because of impertinent employees," I said, still upset.

"Yes, sir, that will be done," Mauricio replied.

I returned to the room where Alana was finishing getting ready. I told her that the employees had been fired. She agreed and said she would go have breakfast and then take Chris to school before going to the university. I asked them to wait for me as I would take them, and I entered the bathroom. When I was ready, we had breakfast and went to Christopher's school. We sorted everything out with the principal, and I dropped Alana off at the university before arriving at my office to work. I had a mountain of papers to review, so I ate at the office because I didn't want to go out; I had a lot of work. In the middle of the afternoon, the phone on my desk rang.

"Sir, your wife is calling," my secretary said, which surprised me.

"Is Alana here?" I asked, unable to believe it.

"Yes, sir, and she insists on seeing you," my secretary replied.

"Tell her to come in," I said, still unable to believe she was here.

"Right away, sir," my secretary responded.

Knock knock.

"Come in," I said, and she entered.

"Sorry to bother you, but I want to talk about what will happen when we separate," she said nervously. I gestured for her to sit down, and she did.

"What do you want to know?" I asked, looking at her intently.

"When we separate, what will happen with Chris?" she asked.

"He will live with me, and you can see him whenever you want," I replied, not giving it much importance. He is my son, so it's obvious.

"I want him to live with me," she replied.

"Why do you want that? According to your grandfather, we have to be married for at least three years. You'll be 20 years old by the time that happens. I suppose you have plans to travel with your friends. What would you do with Christopher in that case?" I asked.

"I don't want that for my life. I have grown very fond of him, and I don't want to be separated from him. I'm not one for parties and going out drinking. I want to be with him," she said, sounding very determined.

"I have a proposal for you. If, after three years when we separate, you still feel the same way, I will accept living with you. Of course, weekends will be spent with me, and I can see him whenever I want," I said, and she smiled.

"I won't change my mind," she said confidently, and outside, a commotion could be heard—my secretary arguing with someone.

"What the hell is going on?" I exclaimed, getting up from my seat. But before I could open the door, it swung open.

"Sir, I'm sorry, but I couldn't stop him," my secretary apologized

"I wanted to see you. You're going to jail for marrying my underage daughter without my authorization," said the unfamiliar man, and I turned to look at Alana, who was trembling for reasons unknown to me.

"Leave, Miss," I instructed my secretary, and she left.

"Father," Alana uttered in shock, and I looked at the man, realizing that he was her father because of his trembling demeanor.
