In a Faraway Place, One Night [2]

Natalie is sitting, curling her eyelashes, as Cairo is snapping selfies. She wants to know why he’s been taking so many pictures. He replies that it’s to show ‘them’ that they're doing well. Natalie can’t believe he sent out pictures when she looks like this! Cairo asks if she has any idea how much the elders will be worried. Natalie whines and starts hitting him for keeping the lie going. Kelvin walks up and asks what lie she’s talking about. As one, Natalie and Cairo yell at him that he doesn't need to know! Rocco gives Kelvin a friendly hug as he sighs about his pitiful CEO.

Chicken Shack. Mom is drinking. Dad sits at her table. He basically says ‘I told you so.’ ‘There’s no free ride.’ ‘Having a broken engagement is no big deal.’ He asks if Mom’s upset because she thinks Natalie is inferior to the rich family's daughter. Mom just shakes her head, so he tells her to text him. Mom replies (verbally) that she regrets what she said. She sighs and drinks again. Dad gives her an ‘Aigoo’ and supposes that Mom give up the doctor son-in-law even if she dies.

Dad tells Mom to look at the cell phone first. Mom doesn’t want to, but Dad shows her the picture Cairo sent. Mom mutters that Natalie is a brat for making her worry and wait and see when she gets home. Dad notices that Mom’s hoping she doesn’t come home for a few days.

Group drinking from the opening. Zoe isn’t there yet. Natalie’s not there either. Everyone – including Isla – is drinking out of the cups. It’s still a lot of liquor they’ve drunk. Kelvin declares that day-drinking is the best. Natalie walks up – in different clothes – and frustrated sighs, shaking her head with frustration (just not tossling her hair) because they are just sitting there drinking. She pleads with the group for them to just go home. Kelvin asks if she wants them to drink and drive? Natalie responds that he should get a room somewhere then. Cairo answers that this is the busy season. Rooms just aren’t available. Natalie looks at him and asks if they’re just going to sleep there together. Cairo just answers by raising his eyebrow as he chews the huge bite in his mouth.

Natalie asks them if she’s the only one who thinks that it's weird. Kelvin says that her and Cairo marrying is weird. It's weirder that she ran away to the beach with Rocco when she’s marrying Cairo. The before events were so weird that he doesn't know what's weird anymore. Isla and Rocco just silently chuckle at Kelvin’s confusion. And Natalie’s frustration. Isla tells her to come sit and drink. They can’t enjoy a drink like this in Seoul. Cairo waves at her to join. Natalie sighs and gives in.

Isla proposes that they play a game. She’s smiling. What is she plotting? Truth or drink. Of course. Kelvin does a little dance in his seat as he says that this reminds him of his college days! Isla mixes two different beers in one cup (the one she was holding in the opening). Either they have to answer honestly or they have to drink. Kelvin spins the bottle. It stops on Cairo. He grumbles about the game being childish. Isla smiles. Rocco asks Cairo how far he went with Isla when they were together. What?! I shake my head. He chuckles at how scandalous he is. Isla watches to see what he says. Natalie doesn’t like the question, but Kelvin does. Cairo clears his throat and drinks. At least he's a gentleman. Or he doesn't want Natalie to hear that. Isla can’t believe that he didn’t answer and Kelvin calls him a "Beastly Man.”

Cairo spins and it stops on Rocco, who groans. Cairo is pleased that it landed on Rocco. He asks Rocco how many women he’s made cry. Still trying to show Natalie that Rocco’s a player so she shouldn’t like him. Rocco smiles and pretends to think. Natalie isn’t happy with this question either. When Rocco sees her face, he gets serious. He laughs and asks who said he made anyone cry. And he drinks. Kelvin isn’t happy with that answer and grumpily tells Rocco to go to hell! (in English, no less). He adds that he curses Rocco, hates Rocco! Boy! Isn’t spin the bottle fun?!

Rocco spins. Kelvin’s in the background, slapping his legs, chanting, “Spin it! Spin it!” He really is getting into this. Like in college. It stops on Isla. Kelvin asks the question: Has Isla ever had anyone in her heart? She sighs and looks like she’s going to drink. Then she answers that Cairo's fingertips are still in her heart. Kelvin is shocked, gasping Awesome! and covering his mouth in shock. Rocco laughs. Natalie looks at Cairo. He looks back and then makes an embarrassed face at Isla, telling her to shut up. She smiles at tormenting him and declares that her breasts are Cairo's work. Natalie is a little scandalized as everyone else laughs. And there I thought she was actually being honest with her feelings toward Cairo. Kelvin chants, “Show me! Show me! Show me!” earning slaps from everyone.

Bottle spin. It ends on Kelvin. No one has a question for him. Burned! Natalie spins again and it ends up on Cairo again. Natalie mutters, asking why it isn’t her turn yet?! Rocco asks the important question, even though I can’t believe he asked it! Rocco asks his bro if Cairo really likes Natalie. Long Pause. All eyes are on Cairo. And I am nervous! After the long pause, Cairo says, “Yes.” I shrieked a little. I never thought he would admit it like that! And I'm wearing a big grin. Everyone is shocked by the answer. Isla’s not smiling anymore. Natalie looks at Cairo and he’s looking back, with a face that says that he means it.

Natalie thinks: “What is this. Why is my heart pounding?” Why *is* your heart pounding?! Cairo’s just sitting there, looking at her. Not nervous at all. Eee! She jumps up and yells at Cairo for lying, because this is the truth game! Even though we know that this is totally the truth. He just gives her a face that says, “what are you going to do about it?” Natalie points the bottle in her direction without spinning it and declares that she will reveal the truth. Cairo laughs at how she’s acting. Isla is just watching him, jealous.

Natalie declares that she and Cairo are not really marrying for real. She sits back down and Cairo says her name in a tone that says that she went too far. Rocco claps. Kelvin wants to know what Natalie’s saying. Natalie explains that because Cairo doesn't want to get married, he’s putting on a show with her to make his family give up. Cairo starts to say something in reply but Rocco declares that he feels relieved. He gets up and moves to sit next to Natalie, asking that it’s okay now, right? Cairo frowns at that.

Kelvin is still in shock. He can’t believe what Cairo did. He stands up and starts yelling at Cairo. Does Cairo know how painful every night was for him?! Does Cairo know how many times he couldn't sleep and stayed wide awake till dawn!? Cairo tells him to take a drink. Kelvin screams that Cairo should drink it! Does Cairo know how hard it was for him to give up his feeling for Natalie? DOES CAIRO KNOW HOW HARD IT WAS FOR HIM TO LET CAIRO HAVE NATALIE?!! Cairo tells everyone to drink. Kelvin realizes that he was the only one who didn’t know. He starts to throw a little fit and Natalie yells at him to shut up. They get it!

Suddenly, Zoe is there. She says that she also didn't know. Kelvin asks how Zoe knew to come. Natalie says that she called Zoe so that he wouldn’t be lonely. Zoe asks if it’s really true. Was Unni getting married all a lie? Another guilt trip from Zoe. Which is why I hate her. She is so manipulative. Zoe grabs Zoe’s suitcase and brings her over to the table. He tells her to sit and they’ll drink together as those who have been fooled by their close friends. She doesn’t drink it. She is pregnant.

Rocco gets up and motions for Natalie to follow him. Cairo watches, not happy. When they’re alone, Natalie remarks that it’s ironic. Somehow everyone is there. Rocco suggests that the ‘all together’ part ends there and they be alone from this point. Natalie is taken a little aback. Not quite the response that Rocco was looking for. And there’s Cairo calling Natalie's name, looking for her. But he was lying about liking her, right. They run off and hide.

Isla follows Cairo. And from where she was standing, she probably saw the hiding Natalie and Rocco. She asks Cairo what he’s doing all alone? He plays it off like he’s just getting some air. She calls him on it, how he’s really looking for Natalie and Rocco. She asks him why he’s so concerned about those two? There aren't any eyes watching anymore. Cairo sighs, looking down. She tells him that he’s really being strange. The Gong Cairo that likes to be at home alone. A vacation that never happened before. And now, so often. What made him this way? Natalie’s really listening now and Rocco’s not excited for Cairo’s answer.

Isla declares that it's a Truth or Dare game and tells Cairo to answer. Rocco looks at Natalie, to see what her reaction is. She’s listening. Cairo doesn’t answer. Instead he turns it back on Isla. Isn't she the strange one? There's no reason for her to follow along. Isla asks why there can’t be a reason. She steps closer to him and tells him that it’s obvious. Yeah, but he doesn’t want to look at it. She tells that she has a pension (villa) nearby. He looks at her like he can’t believe she’s asking again. She says that she’ll stop threatening him. This is being on his side? Still blackmailing him? She says that in return, she’ll ask a favor.

Cairo sighs and asks Isla if she’s serious. She says that she is. She want a child… Natalie can’t believe that the present she wants from Cairo. She starts to say something out loud, but Rocco covers her mouth before they’re spotted. Cairo looks, though. Cairo asks if Isla heard something. She says that she didn’t but he’s positive he heard something. He starts to walk away but Isla grabs him and pulls him into a kiss. Cairo’s eyes are wide open with surprise.

Natalie sees the kiss and her heart sinks. She asks herself why she feels like this? Did her emotions get too invested into this stupid fraud? Natalie gets up to run away but falls, yelping as she does. That’s the end of Isla and Cairo’s kiss. Cairo goes in the direction of the yelp and finds Natalie lying on the ground. He shoves Rocco aside and asks her if she’s okay. She’s got a big gash on her leg that will probably need stitches. Luckily she knows a skilled plastic surgeon. Two in fact. Isla arrives.

Natalie apologizes for interrupting. Cairo, concerned that she’s hurting, declares that they need to stitch her leg up. Natalie waves him off, saying that she’ll bandage it and she should go about his business. Isla tells her that she should listen. Her beautiful leg might scar. Almost desperately, Cairo says that there's a place we can go. Rocco squats down to give Natalie a piggyback ride. Cairo doesn’t want that. Natalie tries to walk, but can’t. Rocco tells her to get on. Natalie sighs and almost reluctantly does. Hmm… Could Natalie’s feelings be changing? Rocco easily stands up and walks off with her. He’s so… stud muffin. Isla asks if they’re going there. Like it’s nothing. How can she just turn her emotions off like that? Cairo says that they are.

They arrive at a clinic. Somehow, along the way, someone wrapped up Natalie’s leg. But it’s still bleeding a lot so it’s soaked through the bandage. Cairo yells inside, asking if anyone’s there. Rocco says that they need to go to the ER. As they’re walking away from the clinic, a woman carrying a child recognizes Cairo. It takes a second but he recognizes Aria's mother! apparently Isla knows her too. Isla asks about Aria growing up well and woman shows the child she’s carrying as proof that she is. They happily smile at Aria and Cairo gently brushes the hair away from her face.

Flashback to 3 years ago. Cairo and Isla are working at the clinic. They’re helping out children, especially those with cleft palates. Aria’s mom arrives but doesn’t want to let them see. She looks ashamed at the condition of her baby. Cairo gently tells her that it's not her fault. Woman says that she didn't have enough money for surgery and people kept asking what she did when she was pregnant to cause that. Back to present where woman says that she used to hide in her house but after listening to Cairo really comforted her and cheered her up.

Aria’s Mom asks why they’re there. Isla says that they were on vacation but someone got hurt. A.MOM clucks at them for not saying something sooner. She gets them inside the clinic. Cairo sews up Natalie’s leg. She keeps looking at him as he works. A.MOM remarks how Cairo and Isla look like a match made in Heaven. Do they have children yet? Uncomfortable shifting out of Cairo and Isla. Cairo starts to awkwardly answer when A.MOM says that years ago, they were getting married. They are married, right? A.MOM tells them to hurry up and have one. Isla smiles and says that they’re currently trying. Rocco can’t believe Isla’s boldness.

Cairo changes the subject. He’s still working on Natalie’s leg. He tells her that when Aria grows, she'll need surgery for her nose so A.MOM should come by his hospital so they can treat the scar on her lip. A.MOM is very grateful. Cairo smiles and tells her not to mention it. He genuinely means it. And I wonder why he doesn’t let this side out more often. Probably because he has to protect himself from his lovely mother. And Isla, who is just like her.

Boys are in the bathroom. I can’t believe that they are having this conversation. After glancing down, Rocco says that he thought Cairo were just an egoist but seems he can be giving, too. I am embarrassed even typing it.

Isla is finishing dressing Natalie’s leg. She takes the opportunity to talk about how unfair it is that only married couples can have children. They call her selfish, but the people that are really selfish are the people who marry. Isla declares that she doesn't want to have a child under the restrictive family umbrella. She wants to raise her child in an open world. Natalie says that she can see what Isla’s saying but she doesn’t quite agree with it. Isla says that she doesn’t expect Natalie to get it. She says that only Cairo understands. Softly, Natalie tells Isla that she’s right. They are very similar. She sounds almost sad. Doesn’t she know that opposites attract?

The boys come back and Cairo asks what they were talking about. Isla say that Natalie's thinking of plastic surgery. Natalie is shocked at that. Smiling, because he knows Isla was kidding, he asks what Isla said. She says that they should work on her nasal tip. Cairo thinks they should do some dorsum augmentation as well. Isla asks what type of tip plasty they should use which leads to Cairo fingering a frowning Natalie’s face. Natalie says that she has no idea what they’re saying but she feels insulted. She punches Cairo in the arm. Rocco says that he’s insulted, too.

Isla laughs and asks Cairo if he wants to go and get the car. Cairo wonders why and Isla says that Rocco will probably have a hard time piggy backing Natalie all the way. Rocco immediately says that he’s fine. And with all those muscles, I don’t doubt it. Natalie protests that she’s fine and doesn’t need a piggyback. Seeing that – the potential for another piggyback – Cairo agrees to go get the car. He tells Natalie to wait for him.

After he leaves, Isla asks Natalie and Rocco whether they want to be alone. Rocco eagerly agrees that they do. Natalie isn’t so enthusiastic. Isla says that she’ll help them. Unsure looks from Natalie and Rocco (because of Natalie’s face).

Zoe helps a very drunk Kelvin up to a room. He’s really huggy. She shoves him off of her and says they should talk. Because when someone’s drunk is the best time to tell them that you’re pregnant. Gosh, she’s manipulative. Kelvin moans that it’s starting again. Oppa, what's our relationship? Oppa, what am I to you? He tells her to just go with the flow. Why do they have to put relationships into words? Zoe gives a protest Oppa. Kelvin sighs and lies on the floor, telling her to tell him. Zoe slaps the floor and tells him to sit up and seriously listen to her. A half-asleep Kelvin says that he’s very serious. Zoe isn’t happy.

Cairo arrives with the car, only to find Isla. She tells him that the other two left. She’s got a sweet smile on her face. Just like Mom when she’s plotting. Cairo is uncomfortable.

Rocco and Natalie arrive at what is probably Isla’s pension. Rocco marvels at how big it is. Phone rings. Cairo calling. Natalie hesitates answering. On his end, Cairo is nervously brushing down his hair and fanning himself because of the heat. Isla asks why Cairo doesn’t just leave Natalie alone. She says that it's wasteful to spend a night alone on a vacation when she has a man like Rocco by her side. Cairo hangs up the unanswered phone and protests that that’s the problem. She's with a guy like Han Rocco! Isla asks why he’s being for nosy. He’s not someone who overreacts about other people's business.

Cairo realizes that he’s acting jealous, so he calms his voice and says that it’s because Natalie is so clumsy. Isla should think of it as volunteer service, like Cairo’s Natalie’s older brother. Ew. Isla laughs at him. Cairo doesn’t try calling again but uses his app to see where she is. He is not happy. He is freak-out not happy. He quickly gets in his car and drives to where Natalie is. Once he’s there, he goes inside and starts looking for her. I’m getting nervous again.

Cairo looks at his phone, wondering where she is. He tries calling. He hears the ring and the phone is sitting on an empty bed. He looks at it, as if he can’t believe he’s not there. Isla enters the room and shuts the door behind her. She means to get her baby now. He realizes he’s been set up. She smiles.

Natalie and Rocco are sitting on a boat. Natalie doesn’t look happy. She’s not sure she did the right thing. Rocco asks if Natalie is regretting leave Cairo and Isla alone. She says that it’s not that. She says that since she’s old-fashioned, she doesn't understand. Even though Cairo’s not on board with the idea either. This is all Isla. Natalie supposes that there must be a world that only those two know. The people she thought they were, it looks like that's not all there is to them. Rocco replies that a man-woman relationship shouldn't be judged by one standard. Natalie says that the Cairo who is with Isla isn't the Cairo she knows. He's someone different. Which one is the real Gong Cairo? Rocco asks Natalie what's real to her. Is it really him? Uncomfortable smiling from Natalie. Rocco leans in to kiss her.

Cairo isn’t happy with Isla. She slowly starts walking toward him, saying that it’s just a night on vacation. It’s not a big deal. It’ll be like small accident that anyone could have. Nothing will change. When he goes back, he can live like nothing happened. Is she really that deluded? He wouldn’t be able to do that and Mom wouldn’t let him do that, once she found out. And Mom would find out. Or is that what Isla is maybe hoping for? Mom having the ammo to make Cairo marry her? They know her parents socially. He asks her why she’s like this. If she wants a child, it doesn't really have to be him. She stoically asks if he’s really that stupid. He doesn’t see why it has to be him? Cairo doesn’t answer. Is it maybe dawning on you that you’re not just friends?

Back on the boat, Rocco is kissing Natalie. Her eyes flutter open but she tries to keep kissing him. He reaches over to pull her closer and she cringes away from his hand. She pushes him away. They look at each other, shocked. Natalie doesn’t know what’s happening. She thinks a moment and says that it’s Zoe. She’s tells herself (and Rocco) that it’s because she's so worried because Zoe’s alone with Kelvin. Who has probably passed out by now. Rocco points out that Natalie was trying to match them together. Natalie answers that leaving them together alone at night is dangerous. Rocco agrees to accept that excuse.

As Rocco walks off the boat, Natalie slumps back down to where she was sitting. She thinks about Cairo saying that he likes her, Isla kissing Cairo and her reaction to kissing Rocco. She closes her eyes and shakes her head. She can’t believe it’s bothering her. Rocco comes back and asks why she’s not coming. She goes.

Back at the hotel, Cairo softly voices what Isla’s not saying, that she still loves him. She reaches up, puts her arms around his neck and pulls him close. He closes his eyes. They almost kiss, but Natalie’s phone starts ringing. It’s Zoe. She sighs as it goes to voicemail. Kelvin is out. She pulls the positive pregnancy test out of her purse and sadly holds it. Like you weren’t looking to get knocked up.

Isla takes Natalie’s phone out of Cairo’s hand, turns it off and throws it on the bed.

She starts to unsnap her shirt. Cairo swallows.

He stops her hands. He shakes his head.

Isla asks if it’s because of Natalie. He doesn’t say anything.

Cairo pats her arm, which is a yes. He grabs the phone and leave.

Isla can barely snap up her shirt.

She starts to weep and covers her face with her hand. And even though she’s been totally manipulative, I feel bad for her.

Natalie and Rocco arrive outside Zoe’s door. She softly calls Zoe’s name but Zoe is not in the room. Only the passed out Kelvin. Natalie checks in the bathroom and finds the pregnancy test. She feels terrible.

Rocco’s waiting outside. Cairo walks up and Rocco asks if he’s there already. Rocco laughs and says “That ended quickly.” Cairo doesn’t respond to that but asks why Rocco is alone. Did he just have a quickie because he was in poor condition today? My subs translate that as “Did Rocco only stick to plain fare since he was in bad form tonight?” Again, I love the wording. Rocco makes a “whatever, never” face as an answer.

A stunned Natalie exits the lodge and spots Cairo. She hopefully asks if he’s seen Zoe. It’s obvious she’s worried as she says that Kelvin is alone, passed out and sleeping on the floor. Yuck, Natalie’s gripping the pregnancy test in her hand. I doubt it’s been washed. Cairo notices the test and asks if it’s Zoe’s. Natalie hides it and unconvincingly says that it’s not. Cairo makes a face like he wants to punch Kelvin and asks if it’s Kelvin’s. He stares at her. Rocco winces and covers his face.

Natalie looks at Cairo for a long moment and then asks what she should do. Cairo remembers that Zoe called Natalie’s phone. Zoe’s text is as follows:

I don't know where I should be. I don’t have a place to go back to. It seems I'm in everyone’s way here. Sorry. Don't look for me.

This girl! I understand she’s knocked up and that’s really bad. I still can't feel sorry for her manipulative text. It’s like a suicide note by someone who wants to be rescued. Plus, she knows Natalie will immediately take responsibility for the whole thing and for making Zoe happy.

Natalie takes the bait. Natalie’s almost crying as she wonders where Zoe went alone at this late hour. Natalie tries calling but Zoe has left her phone. Cairo doesn’t panic at all. He tells Natalie to calm down. It will be all right. They need to wake Kelvin. Rocco says they should go searching first. He tells Cairo to try waking Kelvin up, grabs Natalie’s hand and they hurry off together. Even though Natalie is limping, she’s desperately calling Zoe’s name and looking for her.

Cairo picks up Zoe’s phone. It’s unlocked. He discovers that she’s done a search for Chalos Temple and called to book herself a room. Cairo laughs at how obvious Zoe is. He mutters about how Zoe said not to look for her but then left a bunch of clues.

Natalie’s limp is getting worse as she searches. Cairo drives up in his car and tells them to get in. He knows where she is. Natalie asks how and Cairo replies that he used his brain instead of just dumbly running around. They take off for the Temple.

At the Temple, people are praying. The drama subtitles what the monk is saying but I don’t speak Korean, so I have no idea.

Cairo ends up getting lost in the woods, heading for the temple. They end up going down a dead end road and getting stuck in the mud. Cairo and Rocco snipe back and forth and Natalie yells at him. Natalie gets out of the car and starts to try and push. Rocco gets out to help. They get splattered with mud and the car is still stuck. Cairo gets out and says that they should call a tow truck.

Natalie’s still fretting about Natalie. Cairo notices the mud but goes to call that tow truck. Rocco tells Natalie that Zoe will be safe. As Cairo calls the tow truck, Rocco starts to wipe the mud off of Natalie. He’s jealous even though he doesn’t need to be. Rocco puts his hands on Natalie’s shoulders and gives her a ‘it’s okay’ look. Natalie's not so sure.

Cairo hangs up the phone and says that it will take about an hour. Did he talk at all during that call? Cairo tells Rocco to go and get Kelvin. When Rocco hesitates, Cairo snaps that Zoe isn’t waiting for them and without Kelvin there, there’s not really any point. Rocco agrees to go. He tells Natalie to rest. He’ll be back. She tells him thank you. You should have hugged her. Rocco takes off running, but not before he glances back at Natalie and Cairo.

Natalie goes and sits. Cairo tries to sit by her and she moves. He moves, she moves. He moves, she moves. He moves, she stands up and walks away. He doesn’t know how to do this, go after a girl that he likes. Heh. He tells Natalie that she looks exhausted. She should get some sleep in the car. She doesn’t respond. He tells her he wants to look at her leg and sits down next to her. On the good leg side, but okay. She tells him to leave her alone. He asks why she’s mad at him. He also suffered.

That gets Natalie's attention. She says that this is all Cairo’s fault. If she had picked up Zoe’s call, Zoe wouldn't have disappeared. He points out that she’s the one who left the phone at the pension. She responds that she learned about location tracking from him! She mutters that she’s been through so much trouble because of Cairo. A 'not jealous' Cairo laughs. Cairo mutters that she really wanted to sleep with Rocco, huh. This ticks her off even more. She declares that he’s right. She wanted sex! She was so boy-crazy that she didn't even see what happened to Zoe, even when the girl was right next to her!

Natalie starts to get emotional. She feels badly because Zoe had something to tell her, that’s why she came. She says that if anything happens to Zoe, she won’t be able to forgive herself. Cairo just listens. Natalie says that if she was her usual "nosy" self, she would have figured it out by now. What was she thinking? Zoe was already upset that she wasn't spending enough time with her because she was too busy preparing for the wedding and it's not even a real marriage. What was she so focused on, like a crazy woman?

Cairo looks at her, because she’s talking about them now. Natalie says that she’s lost touch with reality, since she was living the virtual life too much. Natalie declares that, honestly, she’s really overwhelmed. She lost Zoe while looking after Cairo and when she was with Rocco she was thinking about Cairo. What's so important about him? He’s fake, but because of him, she lost all the real things. She looks at him and says that it’s all because of him!

Cairo doesn’t say anything. He just moves in and kisses her. At first her eyes flutter and then they close. She wonders if they’ve gone too far. If she goes back, will everything return to how they were before, as if nothing happened? And a hurt Rocco has returned to see them kissing. Natalie wonders… Can she… Go back? And that’s another long kiss that end!
